RED, RIGHT, RETURNING Cdr Denise A. Porter, JN

mem·ber·ship noun \ˈmem-bər-ˌship: the state of belonging to or being a part of a group or an organization : the state of being a member. –Merriam-Webster Dictionary.

What would we be without our members? Nothing! They are the lifeblood and soul of our organization, that which holds us together, the cohesive bond. Some people become members for the fraternity. Others join

for our educational courses that are taught by our members. Regardless of the reason, we are proud to have all of the participants that we do.

This is a great organization solely because of the members. I truly appreciate all the time that they donate to Pompano Beach Power Squadron to keep us going strong and to help us continue to make an impact on boating safety on our waterways.

Occasionally, we have events where some of our older members cannot attend because they cannot drive, including our dinner meetings. I know that we have tried in the past to arrange a car pool list with not much success. If you are able to pick up a colleague on occasion or would be willing to be called on to check your availability, please let me know. We have had several reports of older members wanting to attend a function but are unable. It would be nice to offer our older associates that have dedicated much time and energy into our organization years past, to still be able to enjoy the fraternal side of our group. I think it is a small token of appreciation that we can extend. Please send me an email ([email protected]) with your name, the best number to reach you, and the geographic area you would be willing to pick someone up in and we will compile a car pool list. Thank you in advance.

In closing, I would like to thank all of our members, old and new, for their support. Following is a list of our membership that is celebrating an anniversary. Pompano Beach sail and Power squadron members, Well we are off again into the steamy summer months with many of our members heading north for the cooler weather. The thermometer has been rising and the summer rains are almost here. Accord-ing to N.O.A.A our rainy season usually has three phases: Late May to early July (“stormiest” part of the season). - Early July to mid-August (hotter with dry periods). - Late August to mid -October (higher rainfall variability due to potential tropical systems and early fall cold fronts). The median start date of the rainy season is May 20th and the median end date is October 17th. During this nearly five-month period, South Florida receives about 70% of the rainfall for the entire year. Break out your umbrellas and tune up the air-conditioning.

Through the great efforts of many and the donations of Dave Bruce our Mariner Room is once again open for educational business. The flooring was replaced; the walls cleaned & painted and new verticals were installed. Howard Kaufman had already purchased new tables and chairs in anticipation of the renovation and they are now in the room. I took JN and N in the Mariner room and I am glad to see it being used again. Please visit the Mariner room and see the efforts of your volunteer members, bridge and executive committee. Thanks goes to Scott Cleary, James McEntee, Ronny Babin, Dave Bruce, Howard Kaufman and all the others who lent a hand.

We had another very successful 7-week Tuesday night ABC boating class with twenty-nine stu-dents in attendance. Our numbers have been steadily rising over the past year or so and we are grateful that we can be of service to our community. Perhaps the larger numbers of students is due to the great work from our advertising team or maybe it’s just the perception that the economy is improving or a combination of the two but either way it is good news.

Thanks again to our ambassadors that we call proctors. They are usually the first members that the public meets and often help in our member recruiting efforts. Please recognize Dave Persing, Bill Pringle, P/C Tom Nolan, Marshall Bellin and my wife Pat Nolan for their help during the classes. Also please recognize Howard Kaufman for his organizational skills and material handling for the courses as well as Scott Cleary for all the background set-up work. Our next 7 week Tuesday night ABC class is scheduled to begin on July 29th, 2014.

I would also like to thank Seth Towbis for teaching “Marine Electronics”, Dan McEllin for teach-ing “Piloting” and Ron Ray for teaching “Seamanship”. Without their expertise and donation of time these classes would not be possible.

Also a big thanks to Ron Ziller and P/C Tom Nolan for their continued efforts with the on-the-water courses. This has risen to become a very important part of our educational program.

Last but certainly not least; thanks to the educational chairs Ron Ziller, Kirk Martin and Seth Towbis for their organizational work in recruiting instructors and scheduling classes.

The District 8 Spring Conference saw our squadron, and several of our members, receive various awards and recognition. Al Furtado was selected to be the Dis-trict 8 Administrative officer, Joe Caraccia was named District 8 Member of the

Year, Rory Porter placed second in the poster contest, and Kathy Babin was named as the editor for Pieces of Eight. Congratulations to them for their achievements and for their willingness to volunteer.

Don’t forget! Mark your calendars. The District 8 Summer Rendezvous is being held at the Hutchinson Island Marriott Resort July 11-13. It looks like a fun event with lots of activities for everyone. There will be access to various water sport activities, deep sea fishing, bicycle rentals, museum tours, a golf tournament, and of course, hospitality and social events.

A full service marina is also available. For more information, contact Ronnie Babin [email protected], Al Furtado [email protected], Mary Dodd [email protected], or John Goebel [email protected] .

May is National Boating Safety month; May 17-23 was National Safe Boating Week. Thank you to Pompano Beach Mayor, Lamar Fisher, who made the official proclamation at the May city council meeting and provided our squadron with the official document.

Boating safety is everyone’s responsibility. You can do your part by keeping you and your boat up-to-date. Our squadron has one of the best education departments in the district. A multitude of courses are available to keep boaters informed and current.

Also, our squadron offers free vessel inspections. Get your boat checked out to ensure that it and your equipment are seaworthy and in good condition. Contact our Education Officer, Lt/C Tom Nolan, or our Vessel Safety Officer, Lt Chad Pringle for more information.

I am still looking for someone to donate a 6” or 8” brass ship’s bell to the squadron. Anyone who has one available can contact me.

As the year comes to it’s halfway point we wonder, ‘where does the time go?’ Hopefully it’s full of balance between work and enjoyment, and if you can mix the two, the better off you are. So with this half-way point in the year as the days start to get a lil’ darker, I am going to encourage everyone to stay bright like an anchor light and stay the course whichever way the winds take you… or your Detroit diesels ;-)

I would like to thank everyone who has been assisting in the building. We had our heath inspection in May, and the June dinner will be cooked outside. I and some WONDERFUL volunteers will be preparing a mixed grill (steak, shrimp, chicken) on the BBQ. Inside our ‘passed–health inspected kitchen,’ we will be preparing the rest of the feast for the remaining members in South Florida. A special treat for those members who do come to June’s dinner; Scott Clearly gratuitously donated a set of 10 quality plastic tables, so now you will be able to load your dinner plates up without the worry of the tables collapsing.

Another benefit for showing up for June’s dinner will be the safe walk into the building on our repaired parking lot… You are responsible for your walk back to your car ;-) . Thank You, Richard Porter and Dana Pekenuce (bar )

May’s activities brought many members to enjoy eating dogs and kissing dummies. With Kathy and Ronnie Babin hosting a great Dogs on the Dock and the AED, CPR, and First Aid class we attended, we are a little fatter and safer after May’s events.

I would like to thank all the members new and old who continually volunteer to help in many ways. Have an idea? Want to spearhead an event? Let me know! [email protected]

I wish all the members and their loved ones safe travelling this summer and I hope to see everyone sooner than later!

we are all saddened To lose a FrIendBy Cdr Denise Porter, JN

We all are still saddened by the loss of our kind and dear friend, Judy Pinkston. Judy was an extremely caring person and even in her time of pain and in her final days, she was reaching out to comfort a friend - that is just who Judy was. She was always there to lend words of encouragement, a smile of understanding, or a warm hand on yours to let you know she cared. She was a true gem and will be greatly and deeply missed by many. I know that Judy would not want us to be sad at her passing, but to celebrate the beauty she brought to everything around her. Her funeral was held on Thursday, May 15 at 2:00 at the Christ Church United Methodist, Ft. Lauderdale.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, Len has asked that donations be made to your favorite charity in Judy’s name.

EPIRB. IF you’re traveling more than a mile off shore, you or your vessel should be equipped with an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon. An EPERB is used to alert search and rescue services in the event of an emergency. It does this by transmitting a coded message on the 406MHz distress frequency via satelite and earth stations to the nearest rescue co-ordination center. Some EPIRBs also have built-in GPS which enables the rescue services to accurately locate you to +/- 100feet. It wasn’t long ago, a group of four football players went offshore in their 24 foot center console boat. Their day started off only a few miles from shore, fishing in deep water.

Skies were clear with a light southerly breeze. Meteorologists had been forecasting the arrival of a strong system for a few days. With their only day off together the ball players thought they could still squeeze in a day on the water. After only a couple hours, two or three miles offshore they noticed a dark line of clouds moving toward them. They talked about heading in, but decided to continue catching fish. Within thirty minutes the wind had changed direction and increased to well over 30 knots. The four football players suddenly agreed to head into shore. The Ocean had other plans for the men. With gale force winds now on them, the seas rapidly built to 7-8 feet. As the men attempted to head the short distance to shore, they were blinded by the horizontal rain and could not make speed of more than a few miles per hour.

After only a few minutes attempting to head to safe water, a ferocious white foam wave came over the side of the port bow, knocking all the men to the starboard side of the boat. A second later a second wave rolled the vessel upside down, tossing the four men from their safety. With the vessel now cap-sized, showing its white hull to the skies, the men clung to the top of it for dear life.

The next day, after no sign of the men, a search party began by Coast Guard and other rescue person-nel. After four days of searching, the vessel was spotted with one person sitting on the bottom of the boat and clinging to the upside down engine. All others had passed away. EPIRBs are affordable. There are pocket sized personal EPIRBs available for under $400, and fixed mounted automatic, deployable EPIRBs for under $500.

Having an EPIRB, the men would still be alive today. Visit your local marine electronics dealer to pur-chase one before you go out, and don’t forget to register it with NOAA by calling (301)817-4542.

JUNE 2014 PBPS MARINER PAGE 9

The first thing you noticed about Judy is that she was beautiful. When you got to know her, you realized that she was good hearted as well. When I wrote in the June 1994 MARINER that I needed an Assistant Secretary, Judy offered her services. She told me that she could do office work, but was not a whiz on the computer. I thanked her for her offer, and assured her that she only needed to know how to type, and that I could

explain how to use the computer for our work, as P/C Seth Towbis, AP, had explained it to me.

She caught on quickly and we worked well together. Neither one of us had a good computer, so we used the one in the office. We came almost daily as we had to input the roster on the computer, which she did very quickly, while I did the minutes. We both worked on the newsletter. Officers and others gave us copies, either hand written or typed, and we typed the hand written ones, and scanned the others to get it into the MARINER.

At the time some retired members manned the desk in the office five mornings a week. They came singly and in pairs, answered the phones and people who came into the office to inquire or inspect. Sometimes, when they ordered pizza, they would get enough for us as well. They were the men who started the squadron, and were very impressed with our dedication. In fact, Lt Emil Jensen, the founder, would donate $1500 each year and announce that it was to show his appreciation for the time we spent working in the office.

Judy was very fastidious and some people found fault with that and thought she was flighty. I never thought so as I found her to be insightful and compassionate. She had lived in South Florida for many years, and knew a lot about the area. She knew where to go to get things done. She also knew where places and political people could be reached. Her memory was fantastic.

On the days that the Auxiliary members met to do crafts to sell at the yearly bazaar, we all went out to lunch and had a fun time. Judy was the one who knew all the VERY latest styles and cosmetics and was very good at giving advice. I never heard her say anything unkind about anyone, not even when some-one hurt her feelings. I told her that only jealous people tried to hurt her feelings, and that made her feel better. I reminded her that strangers in stores would come over to her to tell her how nice she looked.

Judy was always kind and generous in all her dealings. She was a good worker in her church and worked with feeding the poor once a week, as well as doing a lot of work for the squadron and the Auxiliary. After a while we became good friends with Barbara Garito, and spent a lot of time together.

Her firm belief in her religion helped and sustained her when she first got cancer eight years ago. She was treated, operated on, and recovered for a while, but every so often it would return and she would go for either chemo or radiation. Each time she was told she was cured, she thought it was gone. She and Len spent normal times when she was well and went on cruises and weekend trips to the Keys. She loved dancing and having a good time---and she never ever complained about anything! She was fantastic and a good friend.

DORIS’ DISK & DATA By P/Lt/C Doris Garner, AP, Editor

A few minutes after the meeting started we had a prayer said for Past Auxiliary Presi-dent Judith Pinkston, who served in many capacities, as she was forever helpful to all who needed help. My farewell to Judy appears elsewhere in this MARINER. Also, on page 7, I’ve added our Commander’s note to the membership advising us of the

passing of Judy after her long battle with cancer.

Several members came over to offer their condolences to me, and also to Lt Barbara Garito, as they knew we were very good friends, who lunched together twice a week for many, many years. Several other ladies joined us at different times: P/P Janet Dean, AP, P/P Kathryn LaFontaine,S, P/P Betty (Garner) Arahood, Terry Ambrose, P/P Fran Hambrick, P/P Jane Sands , Jo Ciaravela, P/P Shirley Cwik, Sally DeGruttola, P/P Jean Devane, Jan Novak, Barbara Olsen. Audrey Wood and P/P Ella Oelrich, SN. We also brought our visitors, if they arrived on the correct days. We shared our good times and bad times and tried to keep it upbeat and funny. After Fran Hambrick got cancer, she said we were better for her than her Cancer Recovery Meeting the doctor ordered her to attend.

The rest of the meeting was devoted to the graduating class of the recent Public Boating Class. The new people brought in a burst of enthusiasm that was stimulating to all of us.

Be sure to read Captain Grayson’s article about EPERBS. This past week two fishermen in a small boat were capsized by a huge wave and ended up in the ocean with no way to call for help as their cell phones and radio were still in the cabin. When they did not go home, their wives reported them missing. In the morning someone reported seeing a boat upside down in the water. Fortunately, their EPERB was work-ing, and they were soon located hanging onto the boat.

I was supposed to go to the Dogs on the Dock outing, but instead had to wait for the air-conditioner me-chanic to arrive. Don’t you hate it when you get all set to go to an outing and circumstances prevent it? I tried to make the time go faster by starting to put my winter things away to get some space in my closet. It was still frustrating, but I appreciate the space. What I did not appreciate was the huge bill from the A/C man. $903 for an hour’s work! I guess I am spoiled as my neighbor, Greg, fixes a lot of things for me with very small cost.

Today, my son-in-law, Don, sat down at my computer and got my printer working again in five minutes, so now I feel much better, having had those two things completed. His price was right—just a nice thank-you and a kiss from me. Nothing goes as planned. Betty got a call that her childhood friend, Joanie, and back-door neighbor had died in her sleep, due to cancer, complicated by MS. We went to the funeral in New Hampshire. Being eighteen months older, Joanie passed good advice to Betty that she heard in kin-dergarden. They got out of the kiddy pool on my front yard and went into the bedroom to get out of the wet suits. Joanie told Betty to “close the door while we are dressing.’ Betty did, and I was surprised to see both little girls emerge naked, with Betty going to hang the wet suits on the back porch to dry. Joanie came into the bathroom where I was washing my hands with the door open, She releived herself, flushed the bell and went back to the bedroom, closing the door while they were dressing! Kids are so literal!

PRActIcAl ON thE WAtER tRAININg By P/C Ronald Ziller, SN

This is an eight hour seminar with the perfect combination of classroom training and hands-on On-The-Water training. It provides an explanation of how your boat handles and why. Video clips let you visualize the maneuvers prior to your experiencing them on the water. It covers use of lines, departing the dock, operating in a fairway, pivoting, mooring, backing, docking, steering - slalom, holding course - range, and a quick stop. Each student receives a copy of Powerboat Handling Il-lustrated, a DVD, a Student Manual, and a certificate acknowledging his/her training.

Practical on the water Training seminar

The Squadron is offering the Practical On the Water Training Seminar. This will be offered ap-proximately once every month. The classroom sessions are normally held on Saturday mornings followed by the on the water training Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday as required by the number of students enrolled.

The course involves one 3.5 hour classroom session before going on the water for practical training and 1 hour review session after the on the water training. This can be completed in approximately 8 hours. The cost of this course including the Student manual, DVD video and Powerboat Handling book, is $200 per student for USPS members. For non-member students the cost is $225. For family members and partners that can and choose to share the course manuals and DVD the cost will drop by $100 so that the total for partners is $300 for members or $350 for non-members.The training is geared toward the new boater learning to operate a single engine boat in the 16 to 26 foot length. It is also an excellent primer for those members who are seeking to obtain the Inland Navigator certification. The seminar will count for the skills portion of the IN certification.
