CLASSROOM LEARNING
Our teachers are working with facilitators to develop
our Local School Curriculum. We continue to plan
opportunities for learning that interests and engages our
students—this year this involves an emphasis on
STREAM—Science, Technology, Religious Education, The
Arts and Mathematics. We are conscious of keeping our
Catholic heritage and focus in the centre of our learning.
We are continuing our learning journey with
Manaiakalani, with a focus around Learn, Create, Share
with devices. We have a facilitator supporting Tui, Kea
and Piwi classes with their learning this year.
SPECIAL CHARACTER
If you are new to PCS you will see our Special Character
throughout our leadership with our students, our
classroom programmes and our celebration days. We
have a rich Religious Education Programme, and in Term
1, there are many events and celebrations which you are
most welcome to join us for.
This year, we run Mass once a term, and it is great to
have as many students as possible taking part in the
Church. Mass begins at 9am every Sunday, and those
that are involved in Ministries of reading, prayer, altar
service and projector, we ask that you arrive at 8.45am.
At the beginning of the term, we also welcomed Father
Larry Rustia as our new parish priest. Father Larry is a
regular visitor to school. We are feeling very privileged
to have him with us. The children are enjoying getting to
know him. We look forward to working with him
throughout the year.
Our Sacramental Programme begins early this term, so
come in and see Mrs Ryken or Father Larry, if you wish
your child to take part in this very special sacrament of
First Holy Communion and Confirmation. From there,
the students take part as altar servers in the church which
we are always very proud of. The programme begins
with the first hui for parents after mass on March 1st.
I look forward to working with you all this year.
Many blessings,
Joanne Ryken
Greetings, Kia Ora, Talofa, Bula Vinaka,
Konnichi wa, Dobrodošli, Sawa dee, Failte
A very warm welcome back to school! For those that
are new to our school community, we wish you a very
warm welcome to our special community.
We welcomed our new staff, students and families in
Week 1, at the beginning of a short week of learning. It
was a great way to begin our term in partnership with
the parish. Thankyou to everyone who attended and
assisted us that day—especially the wonderful Helen
Payne and Vanya Snowden.
We have quite a few staff changes this year. Joanne
Ryken is Acting Principal, while Mrs Carey is on study
leave for the year, completing her masters degree.
Danni Cook (Whaea Danni) is our Acting DP and Te
Kahu class teacher for the year. We have also welcomed
Felicia Slattery (Miss Slattery) and Melissa Bothma (Mrs
Bothma), who are teaching in Tui and Kea classes. You
can read their introductions, later in the newsletter.
We have a great team of teachers, who have been
working hard to get to know the students, and plan for
some amazing learning for 2020.

UNIFORM
We have a range of sandals available at school. In addition, we also have a some “pre-loved” uniforms available—a range of green and white shirts, plus other uniform items. These are all free of charge. Please call in to the office and see either Helen, or Donna.
SWIMMING
We have all been very grateful for our class
swimming sessions each Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday, as part of our ongoing PE programme.
The students have been enjoying having the
chance to cool of a little in the middle of each of
those days.
We have our school swimming sports on Friday 6th
March. We are looking forward to many of you
joining us for the day. Classes will be
demonstrating the skills they have been learning
and practising, prior to the competitive race
events. If you are not already committed to
helping the PTFA with the canteen, and would like
to help on the day - we would be very appreciative
of time-keeping assistance. If you are able to do
help with a session for part of the day we would
be very grateful—just let Helen or Joanne know.
WATER RESTRICTIONS
You will all be aware that the Far North District is now at a critically low level for water supply to the township. As a result of this we are only allowed water for “essential use” - at school this includes drinking water and toilet use.
We are in the process of limiting water fountain use, to avoid water wastage. We are asking students to bring a water bottle from home. If you are short of water at home, we can fill these at school.
The Ministry of Education is in the process of arranging for an extra water tank for all Kaitaia schools. This tank will be placed on site in the near future. This is to ensure that we have sufficient water for toilet use.
POMPALLIER STUDENT LEADERSHIP
Our Year 7&8 students are always great leaders and are a huge help in our school. They are great role models of our school values and gain lots of experi-ence in leadership to set them off into their next journey at secondary school. As in 2019, every Year 7&8 student is a Pompallier Disciple. Once again in 2020 every Year 7&8 stu-dents is expected to act as a Pompallier Disciple, as part of their service to the school. We have done some learning together about the role, to support them in their endeavours to awhi younger students in the playground during morning tea and lunchtimes. We have had many applications from students will-ing to be House Captains, or be part of the school Special Character Team. Unfortunately there will be some students that will miss out on these roles. We thank them all for their applications, and their willingness to be leaders in our school. We encour-age them all to continue to seek ways in which to be leaders, or to serve our school community. This year we also gave the opportunity for Year 6-8 students to apply to be librarians. These students will be trained to use our library computer system, and act as librarians during class visits, and during some lunchtimes.
PERMISSION
Enclosed is a permission slip that covers our day-to-day trips and activities. We will always notify you of any travel or walking that we do as a school, but this covers us for the year.
There is also a digital citizenship form that you need to discuss with your child. We are also teach-ing these skills at school.
All students in year 4 to 8 are required to sign digi-tal citizenship to remain responsible and safe.
We would love to take this opportunity to extend a
warm welcome to our new students and their whanau!
