The Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal (IPS), founded in 1979, isa public institution of higher education, which comprises fivehigher education schools: the Setúbal School of Technology(ESTSetúbal), the School of Education (ESE), the School ofBusiness and Administration (ESCE), the Barreiro School ofTechnology (ESTBarreiro) and the School of Health Care (ESS).The activities of the Schools are coordinated by the Presidentand his team of Vice and Pro-Presidents, with the support ofa number of cross-school units and Central Services (SPR).The Students`Welfare Services (SAS/IPS) oversee accommodation,meals, psychological and medical assistance for the IPS studentsand offer sporting activities for all the community.
The SPR are located in the centre of Setúbal, in Fryxell Palace,one of the most beautiful and emblematic monumentalensembles in Setúbal, dating back to the 17th century.
The IPS Campus in Setúbal is located 7 kilometres from thecentre of Setúbal, in the Estefanilha area. It is a very quietarea surrounded by parkland. Four of the Schools of IPS arelocated in this Campus (ESTSetúbal, ESE, ESCE, and ESS). Thefacilities are very well designed and benefit from the verylatest technological and scientific equipment. Some otherunits and services also have their own facilities in IPS Campusin Setúbal: the Sports Club, the Welfare Social Services andCIMOB-IPS – Centre for Internationalisation and Mobility.
On weekdays there are buses between the bus station, in thetown centre, and the IPS campus in Setúbal every 15 minutes,the journey time taking around 12 minutes. There is also atrain station close to the campus for trains to Barreiro.
The ESTBarreiro is located in Barreiro, a town located 30kmsfrom Setúbal, on the south bank of the river Tagus, within a15 minute ferry journey of Lisbon.
The IPS currently has 6500 students, 500 academic staff and200 non-academic staff. It offers 23 second cycle courses(Master degrees), 29 first cycle courses, 28 post-graduatecourses and 12 post-secondary courses (level-4).

The School of Education is located in the IPS Campus inSetúbal and occupies an architecturally striking buildingdesigned by the architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, who won theNational Grand Prize for Architecture in 1993.
Over the years the ESE has been responsible for both theinitial training of a large number of pre-school, primary andjunior secondary school teachers, in various areas, anddifferent programmes of continuous teacher education.
In addition, the School offers other courses in such areas likeSocial Communication, Sports, Animation and Socio-culturalIntervention, Art Promotion, and Portuguese Sign Language.

The Setúbal School of Technology is located in the IPS Campusin Setubal. This School offers 8 First Cycle Courses and 8Masters Courses in different areas of engineering, includingdifferent specialisations corresponding to 16 First Cycle Degreeprofiles and 10 Masters.
The School also offers 11 Post-Graduate Courses and 12 PostSecondary Level 4 Courses, which include a preparatory year forthose who are taking up academic studies after a long break.
The strong growth achieved throughout its existence is notonly due to the excellence of the teaching staff and the effortsof the students, but also to the investment in infrastructuresand the continuous updating of laboratories. The School of Business Administration began operating in 1995and is located in the Setúbal Campus.
The School operates in modern purpose-built premises withan auditorium equipped with the latest audiovisual equip-ment, lecture rooms, seminar classrooms, computing labs, adocumentation centre, and an audiovisual, multimedia andcomputing centre that provides around 400 computers, scanners,printers, CD recorders, specialized software and internetaccess. Wireless access is free in all areas of the building.
Following an internationalization strategy, the School startedoffering an international module, taught entirely in English,which is attracting an increasing number of students.
Participation in international events and intensive programmesare also pillars of this strategy which already covers more than100 students per year.

The Barreiro School of Technology is located at Quinta dos
Fidalguinhos, Lavradio, Barreiro in an emblematic, modern
building, which is an important landmark in the region. The
quality of its architecture was recognized, being the recent
winner of an International Architecture Award.
The School aims at a high level of interaction with the business
community, by providing services and enhancing research and
development of know-how.

The School of Health is temporarily housed in the building ofthe School of Business and Administration in the Setúbal Campus.
The ESS/IPS is the most recent School of the Polytechnic Instituteof Setúbal. Nevertheless it has already a well known reputationamong the academic community in Portugal. The School offersfirst and second cycle Bologna degree programmes, as well asa wide range of short courses for the continuous professionaldevelopment of healthcare professionals.
Through a process of strategic alliances with Health Care Services,Schools, Industry and Municipalities, different projects havebeen developed, which the School considers excellent oppor-tunities for the students and teachers to stay close to society’shealth care needs.
The School is involved in national projects and also in projectswith European countries and with Brazil, Australia and theUnited States.

Since 1993 SAS/IPS, the Student’s Welfare Services of the Poly-technic Institute of Setúbal, have assisted eligible students byawarding study grants and other forms of support, includinglodging, food, health services and support for sport and culturalactivities.
The SAS/IPS offer also a number of services to the entire studentcommunity, including subsidised accommodation in the studentresidence with capacity for 294 students, subsidised meals atthe campus refectory, and the sports club, which offers awide range of sports supported by excellent facilities.
Social support has been extended over the years to includepsychological support, general health care and family planning.
Lodging
The Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal provides lodging at theStudents Residence in Manteigadas (walking distance fromthe Setúbal Campus). This Students Residence has capacityfor 294 students. Lodging is available from September to July,but early booking is recommended. For Erasmus studentswho wish to find their own accommodation (renting an apart-ment or room) there is a Protocol with Movijovem (NationalYouth Hostels) to provide lodging at a reduced price on arrival.

Portugal is the most western country in continental Europe.It borders on Spain and the Atlantic Ocean. It covers approxi-mately 92,000 km2 and includes the archipelagos of Madeiraand the Azores. It has a total stable population of around 10million inhabitants. Lisbon is the capital of Portugal.
Today, Portugal has economic relations with the whole world.It is an important partner in the European trade and its presencein world trade is growing. Considering itself to be a moderncountry open to the outside, 21st century Portugal is a countrythat instils trust among its international peers, as demons-trated by the organisation of EXPO 98, Porto – Culture Capitalin 2001 and the European Cup (football) in 2004, among others.
The official language of the whole country is Portuguese.Most of the population, and especially young people living inurban areas, also speak English and/or French. Most of thePortuguese population is Catholic. However, there is completereligious freedom and the Portuguese State in non-confessional.
Setúbal is a Portuguese city, located 40 kilometres to thesouth of Lisbon. It is a port city with over 100,000 inhabitants.Besides the numerous monuments, historic places, museumsand art galleries, Setúbal has a fairly busy cultural life, andits FesTróia film festival and Seixal Jazz music festival arealready internationally well known. As the city’s population isyoung, there are a considerable number of bars, discos andcafés to suit all tastes and, mainly at the weekend, nightlifeon the streets of Setúbal is very lively. The busiest shoppingarea in Setúbal is located in the old town, which is betterknown as the “Baixa”. The area is mostly for pedestrians andyou can find almost every type of shop there. Markets are agood option, too. Their hustle and bustle makes them anintegral part of the city’s commercial life. In comparison toother European cities, Setúbal cost living can be considered low.
The coastline, with over 13 kilometres of excellent wide sandybeaches and quiet zones, provides very pleasant locationsfor a range of water sports, such as sailing, windsurfing,water-skiing, canoeing, rowing, body boarding, jet-skiing, divingand underwater fishing. The river Sado is an emblematicsymbol of the city where dolphins still swim. The Arrábida

range protected area, integrated in to the Arrábida NaturalPark, is considered to be one of the most beautiful places inPortugal. Setúbal has a Mediterranean climate with tempera-tures between 8oC and 13oC in winter, and 20oC and 34oC insummer.
The nearest airport to Setúbal is the Lisbon Airport. There areseveral ways to get to the centre of Lisbon from the airport:the aerobus, with its final stop at Cais do Sodré railway station,taxis and regular buses.

How to travel to the Setúbal Campus from Lisbon airport?
At Lisbon airport it is possible to get a taxi or bus to Estaçãodo Areeiro where there is a Fertagus train, departing everyhour to Setúbal.
It is also possible to get a taxi to Estação do Oriente, thentake the fast TST bus no. 562 that departs every half an hourto Setubal (the trip takes 45 minutes).
From the centre of Setúbal there are TST buses to “IPS Campus”,“Morgada” or Faralhão”, every 15 minutes, with a bus stopat the Setúbal Campus. There is a bus stop close to theStudents Residence.
There are also trains travelling from Barreiro, with railwaystations in Setúbal (Setúbal station and Quebedo station) anda station close to the Setúbal Campus (Praias do Sado).
How to travel to the Barreiro Campus from Lisbon airport?
From Lisbon to Barreiro it is possible to travel by ferry boat.The ferry boat terminal is located at Terreiro do Paço. Thereare 2 ferry boats per hour and the trip across the river Tagustakes 15 minutes. From the ferry boat terminal to the Schoolof Technology in Barreiro there are TCB buses no 1 and 2.There is another TCB bus (no 8) which runs only from 5 p.m.to 9 p.m.
Near the School there is also a railway station (Baixa da Banheira)where it is possible to take a train to Setúbal.
Currency
Portugal adopted the Euro in 2002. The Euro is the commoncurrency of Euro-zone countries within the European Union.
Portuguese Time
Continental Portugal time is the same as Greenwich Mean Time(GMT). In other words it is one hour behind Continental EuropeanTime. The time changes in March and September: clocks goforward one hour in March and back one hour in September.

Phones
International calls can be made from public telephone boothsor post offices. Telephone booths can be found all over thecity and even in the Colleges. It is quite easy to find oneavailable. Post offices are open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.and are closed on Saturday and Sunday.
For international calls from Setúbal, you have to dial 00 +country code + area code + subscriber number. To phone fromabroad to Setúbal, dial the international access code + 351 +265 + subscriber number.
At this moment in time there are 3 mobile phone companies:TMN, TELECEL and OPTIMUS.
Postal Service and Messages
Stamps can be purchased from post offices, shops with a CTTsign or automatic machines throughout the city. There are threetypes of postal service: normal, blue (faster) and express. Anormal letter sent to any country in Europe takes approxi-mately 5 days to reach its destination.
National Holidays
On National Holidays, public services are usually closed. PublicHolidays in Portugal are 1 January (New Year), 25 April (Dayof Liberty), 1 May (Day of the Worker), 10 June (Day of Portugal,Camões and the Communities), 15 August (Assumption Day),5 October (Day of the Republic), 1 November (All Saints' Day),1 December (Day of the Restoration of Independence), 8 December(Immaculate Conception) and 25 December (Christmas). Thereare other variable Public Holidays like Carnival (Carnival Tuesday),Easter (Good Friday) and Corpus Christi. In addition, there aremunicipal Public Holidays: Setúbal's is on 15 September anddedicated to Bocage, the city's poet.
Driving
There are various speed limits in Portugal (50km per hour incities; 90km per hour outside cities and 120km per hour onmotorways). The use of safety belts in cars and crash helmetson motorbikes is compulsory. The alcohol in the blood limit is 0.2gper litre and violations can be punished with a prison sentence.

Banks are open from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday to Friday.In Setúbal (and many other Portuguese cities and towns, andeven the Colleges), there are numerous "Multibanco" cashdispensers where transactions, including withdrawals up to200 Euros, can be made using VISA, Eurocheque, AmericanExpress, Mastercard, Maestro, Plus, Electron, Cirrus, Claus(Andorra), 48 (Spain), Banksys (Belgium) and other cards. Ifthey so wish, students can open a personal account at oneof the many Portuguese banks that all have branches inSetúbal.
