The core components of the roller mill include:

x the wear-protected grinding table with double groove grinding track x two roller pair units which adapt independently to the bed of material by vertical movement and by pivoting around their guide pin x the housing x the adjustable nozzle ring x the drive x the high-efficiency separator x the hydraulic system x the discharge system and the external material circuit x the feed valve and the feed chute.

    Double grinding roller system

Two double roller pair unitsrotate on the driven grindingtable. The principle of doubleroller pair units results in a lowspeed difference between rollerand grinding table and thus inlower wear. The ability of thegrinding rollers to move verti-cally enables them to automati-cally compensate for wear andmaintain an optimum contactbetween the grinding elementand the material being ground.

If one roller is lifted by the bedof material, the other pressesdown even more strongly. Thisinteractive mode of workingimproves the grinding effect.Advantage: the throughput andthe specific power requirementremain constant right until theend of the grinding elements’service life.

The different wear rates of theinner and outer rollers and grind-ing tracks can be equalised byinfinitely variable adjustment ofthe point of force introductioninto the roller carrier in thedirection +X or -X. This adjuststhe grinding force distributionto match the wear, therebymaximising the utilisation ofthe grinding elements. It is alsopossible to turn the roller pairaround, so that the outer rollermoves to the inside and vice

versa, which results in a uni-form wear profile and thus in a long service life.

    Double groove grinding track

In the Polysius roller mill, thedouble groove grinding trackincreases the retention time of the material on the grind-ing table. This is a particularadvantage in the case of mat-erial with unfavourable grindingproperties and a tendency notto form a stable bed.

The double groove grindingtrack also ensures that the bedof material is not too deep andminimises the amount of mat-erial passing unground betweenthe rollers and the grindingtable. This reduces the specificpower requirement.

Hydraulic cylinder of the roller mill.

    Adjustable nozzle ring

The gas required for transporting and drying the material inside the millflows through the nozzle ring.

The gas distribution andvelocity can be optimallyadjusted to suit the requiredmaterial loading or dryingcapacity, thus minimising the specific gas flow rate and the pressure drop in the grinding system.

    Hydraulic system

The grinding force is applied to each roller pair unit by twohydraulic cylinders. Infinitelyvariable pressure control auto-matically adjusts the grindingforce to the current operatingconditions of the mill.

This ensures constant economyof operation over the entirethroughput range (i.e. evenunder partial-load conditions). When the mill is starting andstopping, the grinding force is reduced by lowering the hydraulic pressure. Eachhydraulic cylinder is connectedto a piston accumulator whichabsorbs the grinding shocks.

    Drive

The roller mill drive consists of the motor and a planetarygear unit that was speciallydesigned for roller mills. Thisgear unit is equipped with ahydrodynamic axial thrust bear-ing with partial or full hydro-static lubrication, which acceptsthe grinding forces and trans-mits them directly into the foun-dation of the unit.

An auxiliary drive ensures easystarting up of the mill, even

when it is loaded with materialafter an emergency stoppage, and allows quick emptying and positioning of the mill formaintenance work.

To allow the grinding of differ-ent materials and finenesses, a variable-speed motor or aspeed-change gear unit adaptsthe grinding speed to therequired product characteristicsand product fineness.

    Housing

The housing is fitted with spe-cial seals to prevent the inleak-age of false air. Easy-to-opendoors facilitate maintenance ofthe mill.

Special dismounting devicesensure straightforward turning-around or replacement of thegrinding rollers through themaintenance doors.

The housing contour designguarantees an optimum mater-ial distribution, quick collectionof the ground material and reli-able conveyance of the finishedmaterial to the separator.

The design also promotes theformation of a stable grindingbed and greatly reduces theinternal circulation of material,so that the mill can also beoperated efficiently and stablyat high product finenesses.

    External material circulation

The gas velocity in the nozzlering can be specifically min-imised, so that a large portionof ground material is not en-trained by the hot gas streambut falls through the nozzle ringonto a discharge ring rotatingwith the grinding table. Thismaterial is then returned via adischarge chute and bucket

elevator to the grinding table or is con-veyed to the high-efficiency separator.

The discharge ring is of modular designand made of highly wear-resistant ele-ments for long service lives and simplemaintenance.

The energy saving mechanical con-veyance by bucket elevator reduces thepneumatic conveying of material in thegrinding compartment itself. This has theeffect of lowering the pressure drop, min-imising the energy requirement and mak-ing the mill operation much smoother.Another advantage is that the bucket ele-vator facilitates emptying the roller millfor maintenance purposes.

    SEPOL® high-efficiency separator

For separating the ground material intofinished product and oversize, Polysiusroller mills include a SEPOL® dynamichigh-efficiency separator, which can beadjusted in accordance with variousparameters. Due to its excellent selectivi-ty, this separator drastically reduces thespecific power requirement for the grind-ing process.

    Material feed system

To ensure efficient feeding of the materialand to act as an airlock, a rotary feederfor coarse material and an inlet chute

designed to suit the mill feed material areintegral parts of the grinding system.

Both the coarse feed valve and the chutecan (if necessary) be indirectly heated in order to ensure reliable operation evenin the case of high material moisture contents.

    Wear protection

Special materials, adapted to the abra-siveness of the material to be ground, areused for the roller tyres and the grindingtrack, while special linings are installed inthe mill housing and separator.

These ensure effective wear protectionand thus increase the service life and theoperating economy.

    B

Roller mills from Polysius efficiently grind all raw mater-ials for the clinker manufac-turing process – ranging from soft to very hard, from dry and fine to very moist and sticky and fromslightly abrasive to extremely abrasive.

This grinding system includes a feed belt conveyor to the mill (equipped with crossbeltmagnetic separator and metaldetector), the diverter gate forfast removal of tramp metal, the coarse feed valve (optional-ly of heatable design) and thefeed chute.

The external material circula-tion and the adjustable nozzlering minimise the pressuredrop of the mill and the energyrequirement of the mill systemfan.

In addition to the plant layout, design details such as grindingelement qualities, the wearprotection and the separatorversion are optimally suited tothe raw material grindingrequirements.

The parameters determined by the specific feed material, such asenergy requirement, operatingbehaviour and wear character-istics, are established by means of the Atrol test mill and used as a design basis for the mill size, drive power, separator size, wearprotection concept and grindingelement quality.

... for granulated blast furnace slag grinding.

    A

    B

Energy-efficient grinding of granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) – fine-grained, usually very moist and also abrasive – to an extraordinarily high finished productfineness . . . a specially demanding appli-cation.

An important feature of thePolysius granulated blast fur-nace slag grinding system is agenerously dimensioned exter-nal material circuit, in whichthe circulating material passesthrough a magnetic drum sep-arator which removes the liber-ated fine iron from the process.

The finished material is collect-ed in a bag filter, in order toprotect the downstream systemfan from abrasive blast furnaceslag dust.

A hot gas producer installed fordrying the granulated blast fur-nace slag heats not only themill, but also the coarse feedvalve in the new material feedsystem, the feed chute and therecirculating bucket elevator.

The mill is designed on thebasis of the Zeisel test, whichrequires only 3 kg of granulat-ed blast furnace slag butshows an excellent correlationto industrial operating results.

Chemical analysis of the granulated blastfurnace slag provides informa-tion on the wear rate of thegrinding elements and is thusthe basis for selection of thewear protection material.

Clinker – with and without additives and intergrinding materials – can be ground flexibly and energy-efficiently in the Polysius roller mill to all types of highest quality cement.

Apart from the simple systemmanagement, the main argu-ments in favour of using aroller mill for clinker grindingare:

x Highly economic operationThe electrical energy requirement is only about 60 % that of a tube mill system.

Due to the extraordinarily low wear rates, theservice lives of the grinding elements are enor-mously high (in the case of OPC grinding, thegrinding elements achieve lifetimes of above20,000 hours - without any marked changes incontour and thus with consistently high grindingefficiency).

x Efficient grinding and drying For composite cement production, the roller millpermits the simultaneous grinding and drying oflarge amounts of moist additives. For drying theadditives and for specifically directed dewateringof the sulphate bearer, the mill can be heatedwith hot gas from a hot gas producer or withexhaust air from the clinker cooler.

x High flexibility The short turnaround times permit a very rapid changeover to different product types.

x High product quality The quality of the produced cements is compa-rable with that of tube mill products and in somecases is even better.

Coal, petroleum coke and similar solid fuels can beground to the product finenessrequired for the combustionprocess while observing all safety-engineering require-ments.

This grinding system isdesigned to ensure effectivegrinding, drying and separationof solid fuels such as coal andpetcoke as well as safe hand-ling of the ignitable and explo-sive powdery products.

The grinding plant thereforeincorporates comprehensivesafety features including apressure shock resistant coarsefeed valve for mill feeding, pressure shock resistant rollermill and separator up to 8 bar, pressure relief stacksbefore and after the mill, dustcollection filter with explosionvents, quick-closing dampersbefore and after the filter andsystem fan and a return airduct equipped with controldamper for temperature andgas flow control. Further safe-ty-relevant plant componentsare the temperature and CO2monitoring system and a CO2inertisation system.

The mill interior is designed to largely prevent fuel depositswhich could be a source ofspontaneous combustion. There is no external materialcirculation. Tramp metal isremoved via special dischargesystems.

In the case of known fueltypes, the plant is dimensionedon the basis of the HardgroveIndex and the chemical analy-sis (ash). In extreme cases and

in the case of unknown fuelgrades, it is good policy toadditionally conduct a pilottest.

Ideally, the grinding plant isoperated with an inert atmos-phere (O2 ≤ 12%). However, itis also possible to use hot airor flue gas with higher oxygencontents - provided that certainvalues for the hot gas tempera-ture and volatiles content of thefuel are not exceeded.
