Thermal conductivity λ and insulation materials
• Thermal conductivity is definited by the λ (lambda value) symbol and represents the quantity of heat passing throughthe contact surfaces of two material, both of which have a volume of 1 cubic meter and a difference in temperature of 1°C.
• Thermal conductivity is measured in W/m• K, and materials are considered insulation materials when their thermalconductivity λ value is lower than 0,100 W/m • K.
• The lower is the λ value, the better are the insulating properties of the products taken in consideration
• For a given insulating material, the main parameters which influence thermal conductivity are the following:
- Material composition- Specific weight (density)- Cells structure
• In any case it is important to be able to simulate and stabilize the air quantity contained in the structure in order toguarantee an optimal λ value.
• Due to its peculiar properties (compact molecular structure, dimensions of cells and high number of closed cells),Flexible Elastomeric Foam (FEF), extruded and foamed, shows low thermal conductivity values, above all when oneconsiders that the maximum value foreseen for this product by the recent European Standard EN 14304, must notexceed 0,050 W/m• K ( at mean usage temperature of 10°C ).
Next table defines the thermal conductivity values for the insulation material POLYFLEX C1 at the different meantemperatures as resulting in the Certications of Specialized Institutes .

Resistance factor µ to water vapour trasmission
• It is defined by the µ (MU) symbol and is an indicator which permits to evaluate the capability of certain insulationmaterials to realize an efficient barrier against transmission of water vapour.
• This parameter is important to assess the suitability of the insulation material, especially in the typical applicationsof plants and refrigeration components, where cold media (fluids) flow in the pipelines.
• The higher is the µ value, the longer life and efficiency of the insulation material will be guaranteed.
• For thermal insulation material in general and for the elastomeric foamed rubber in particular, the resistance totransmission of water vapour is strictly linked to the following characteristics:
- Molecular structure of the product with high close cells ( > 90/95%)- Small cells structure- Excellent cohesion of cells walls- Homogeneous material thickness
• To prevent the risk of condensation, the external surface temperature of the insulation should be equal or higherthan the dew point in utilization conditions.
• µ FACTOR CONVERSION TO EQUIVALENT AIR THICKNESSThe following table underlines how the air stratum can be obtained for a specific insulation material, bearing in mindthat the air, under quiet conditions, is the best possible thermal insulation material compared to any other insulation,with a thermal conductivity of 0,020 W/m• K.

• Assuming to utilize the elastomeric rubber Polyflex C1 with a water vapour transmission value of µ ≥ 7000, theequivalent air strata resulting from the calculation would be the following:
IMPORTANT NOTE
For information purposes it should be clarified that the water vapour transmission µ is a numeric parameter referredto air insulation.This value is not used and is not envisaged in the parameters to calculate the thermal dispersions, which are suitableto choose the correct insulation thickness for the actual usage conditions.

Note: The value normally taken in assumption for the calculation are:

Are the specific cases when the fluid utilized in the pipework have a temperatures lower then the external ambient temperature.
This combination is made worse by the more o less presence of humidity in the air of the ambient which is a the major vehicleto trigger the condensation formation very detrimental for the energy saving and also because is leading to deep corrosionphenomenon of the pipework and equipment as well.
Therefore the scope of insulation have two functions:
-achieve the energy saving
-protect the installation components, ensuring a surface external temperature (in contact with the ambient, therefore with theair and the humidity) always lower then the dew point of the air.
In order to calculate the correct insulation thickness the following data are necessary and according the formula :
1) Temperature of the fluids in the pipework or component
2) Ambient temperature
3) Ambient relative humidity
The formula allows to calculate the insulation thickness needed to avoid condensation and the more simple expression of thatformula allows to obtain the value related to the flat surfaces which represent the most dispersant surfaces and therefore theworse and more severe applications .
Rules for the calculation of the thicknesses insulating to prevent the formation of condensation on the pipes
operating with fluids at cold temperatures - The value of ta - tr is shown in table 1 below.

SUMMARY
• INTRODUCTION• DIRECTIVE 89/106/EEC AND REGULATION EU No. 305/211 - March 9, 2011• STANDARD (EN 14304 edition - November 2009) - Requirements and obligations
INTRODUCTION
A plan for the abatement of polluting emissions in the atmosphere was defined at worldwide level in 1990 during the well-known KyotoConference and was aimed at encouraging the Member Countries to adopt an adequate energy policy which, without penalizing theenvironmental comfort, could boost a sustainable growth especially for developed countries.
The EU Member Countries, at that time already engaged to foresee and realize a common “future”, had already begun to introduce somerules, provisions and Standards (in the most different sectors of activities), aimed at implementing the Kyoto plan as soon as possible.
Among the different sectors, the building segment represented over 30% of the total energy consumption and was therefore worthy offast actions.
DIRECTIVE 89/106/EEC and EU Regulation No.305/2011 of March 9, 2011.
Through Expertís Commissions the EU Directive for building materials (89/106/EEC) was promulgated. It contained the main fundamentalsand parameters for the materials to be used, with the target to guarantee more quality, safety, comfort and energy saving in theconstruction sector.
In March 2011 the EU Community approved the Regulation No. 305 published on April 4, 2011 which abrogated the EU Directive89/106/ECC and is officially in force for manufacturers of building materials starting from July 1st 2013.
The scope of the new Regulation is to guarantee and define the harmonization of all aspects linked to the free circulation of goods and
unify all administrative provisions, legislation and rules in one single document valid for all EU Member Countries
Within the Regulation also the main requirements of the buildingís materials have been updated, as well as those of the insulationmaterials used in building construction as shown in next Table 1.

LIST OF REQUIREMENTS AS PER REGULATION No. 305/2011 (Table 1)
Standard EN 14304 edition November 2009
The EU Directive on building materials laid down expressly that harmonized specific Standards should be promulgated to guaranteethe most appropriate use for each single product, also based on its technical properties, some of which are not comparable to thedifferent types currently available on the market.
As regards Flexible Elastomeric Foam (FEF), the Standard EN 14304 was prepared and approved by the competent Technical Commissionon November 2009, and then published in August 2010.
Producers were informed that application of the new Standard for the purpose of CE Marking would become compulsory starting fromAugust 1st 2012.
With the following tables we will try to provide the operators of this sector with some useful information regarding the contents andthe obligations included in the Standard.

Mainly the specification marked with (*) in the above table 2 will be analyzed hereafter, because these are the most significant and
helpful features for market operators.
THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY
It is defined as the peculiar characteristic of insulation materials, is known with the λ (lambda) symbol and is measured in W/m•K.
The lower is the lambda value, the better is the insulation performance of the product taken in consideration. Usually a material is
defined ìinsulation productî when the value of its thermal conductivity is less than 0.100 W/m•K.
The EN 14304 fixes the limit of elastomeric insulation products (FEF) of thermal conductivity, not above 0.050 W/m•K at a
mean temperature of 10 °C.
The lambda value is determined by testing the products and is fixed by the following standard:
-EN 12667 for flat surfaces (sheets) and EN 12939 for the thickness.
-EN ISO 8497 for cylindric products (tubes).
It is defined on the whole range of service temperatures minimum of the product ( with a min. limit of -170 °C).
Tests must be performed on the minimum and maximum thickness of the full production range.
The manufacturer is allowed to declare just one lambda value, valid for the whole range of thicknesses, under condition that the
highest value resulting from the different tests is the one to be taken into consideration.

They are the variable sizes determined by the Standard:
- EN 822 and EN 823 for sheet plate, rolls and tapes.
- EN 13467 for tubes

REACTION TO FIRE
In order to standardize and regulate at EU level one of the most important aspects linked to safety and security of the environment,i.e. the reaction to fire of building materials (insulation materials included), several Standards were promulgated and enforced, asfollows:

and both must be included in the initial classification.
In the specific case of test on tubes the classification will report B L (subscricpted), and for sheets B only:

TRACE QUANTITIES OF WATER SOLUBLE IONS, PH VALUE AND RELEASE OF DANGEROUS SUBSTANCES (Halogens)Ions traces of causing possible corrosion of piping in carbon steel:
