Baker College: An Owosso Cornerstone For over 35 years, Baker College of Owosso has proudly existed on Gute Hill, as a post-secondary institution serving individuals who wish to improve their lives through preparing for a career path. Located just blocks from downtown Owosso, Baker College sits on a historical piece of property of over 25 acres. Since the late 1800’s, this property has housed a variety of businesses and educational entities. Baker College has expanded the acreage to include facilities for the Baker Auto Diesel Institute of Michigan and the Welcome Center on M-52 that also provide an aesthetically impressive northern entrance to the city of Owosso. In 1983, Baker College leaders thoughtfully selected Owosso to house a campus, whose employees and students would weave into the fabric of the community. Over time, this has resulted in Baker College having a positive impact on the culture and economic strength of Owosso and the greater Shiawassee County. The goal has always been to add value to the community. Numerous interns train at Memorial Hospital, various businesses, nonprofits and educational organizations. Hundreds of graduates from over 90 programs have been employed in Shiawassee County, all over the state of Michigan and nationally. Program fields range from auto related, education, nursing, business, computer science and health. These graduates not only become ambassadors of Baker College, but also of the city of Owosso. Baker College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and has evolved during its 100 year history. This is reflected on the Owosso campus by the additions in recent years of new residence halls, a new Health Sciences building and the Auto Diesel Institute of Michigan. Students from all over the state and country are enrolled in Baker programs and faculty members are highly qualified and respected in their fields. Recently, a consolidation plan has been announced for Baker College to enhance and improve facilities, program strength and resource usage. The Owosso campus will continue to grow and prosper through the addition of several additional health science program offerings expanding the choices for students and increasing the student body.

Shiawassee County is experiencing a sustained period of economic success. With unemployment at only 4%, and a growing number of participants in the labor force, there are plentiful job opportunities available in the community. In fact, regular job fairs are being held in the community to help employers meet the demand for a talented workforce. This growth is happening across a number of business sectors, offering openings to candidates with a wide variety of backgrounds.
