A political party is an organization of people which seeks to achieve goals common to its members through the acquisition and exercise of political power.
In democracies, political parties are elected to run a government by the electorate.
Political parties are the back bone of democracy.
India has a multi-party system with predominance of small regional parties.
Political parties that wish to contest local, state or national elections are required to be registered by the Election Commission of India.
The party is recognised in four or more states, is declared as a "National party" by the EC. Otherwise, it is known as a "State Party".
All parties contesting the elections have to choose a symbol from a list of available symbols offered by the EC

Regional parties are parties whose main holds are in one certain state and mostly they participate in the elections only within that state.

Political parties play a decisive role in making laws for the country.
Political parties form and run governments.
A party which does not get majority or come under the majority coalition, needs to play the role of opposition.
Political parties shape public opinion.
Political parties provide people access to government machinery and welfare schemes implemented by governments.
