Political&Public Life Awards

There are awards and awards- all of which play a useful part in recognisingoutstanding individuals who contribute so much in their different ways to makeour lives rewarding and satisfying.

Asian Voice Political and Public Life Awards have a unique tradition. Readersand well wishers of every ideological, ethnic and religious hue nominate peoplewho, in their view, fit one of two categories.

There are no conditions whatsoever in their choice, but the selection in eachcategory is a test for the panel of judges, whose contribution in picking out thedeserving candidates is deeply appreciated. It gives me satisfaction to see thatthere are outstanding individuals from Indian, Bangladeshi, Pakistani and nativeborn British communities.

Every one of you who are recipients of these awards deserve our heartiest congratulation. May you reachan even higher level of public acclaim for your services to the community and may you make Britain an evengreater country than it already is.

Finally, I must thank Rt Hon Keith Vaz, MP for helping us in so many ways. Many thanks also due to themembers of my team for making this occasion such a success!

C B PatelPublisher / Editor

The Multicultural Britain

Outstanding AchieversOn behalf of the panel of judges, I am delighted to welcome you to the fifth annualAsian Voice Political and Public Life Awards at the House of Commons.

Founded decades ago by the doyen of British Asian Publishing, thelegendary CB Patel, the Asian Voice newspaper has the largest readership amongst the Asian community inBritain. It has been at the forefront of ensuring that the issues of concern to Britain’s glorious multiculturalsociety are brought into the public domain. It is one of a number of media that is the bridge betweencommunities. Britain’s 5 million ethnic minority community reads one of more of these media outlets everyweek.

The British Asian community has made a great contribution to our country. We are key stakeholders inpolitics, industry, business and even show business. Tonight we celebrate the achievements of a few of them.People such as Nirmal Sethia who is tonight’s winner of the Lifetime achievement award, Leicester City FootballClub and their new Asian owners, and charities such as Path to Success which represent just one of manyways in which the community gives something back.

But the uniqueness of these awards is that they are held in the mother of Parliaments and that theyhonour and recognise political figures who have really impressed the British Asian community. One of lastyear’s winners went on to become Prime Minister!

This year recognises three of Parliament’s vintage new intake, Nadim Zahawi (Conservative), JulianHuppert (Liberal Democrat) and Anas Sarwar (Labour). Each one has cut an impressive figure in the chamber. They will end up in our view where the following three successful award winning politicians have, Ed Daveythe Junior Minister of the Year, Michael Gove the Cabinet Minister of the Year, and Ed Miliband the Leader ofthe Opposition.

I hope the evening will be remembered as one where we celebrate achievement but also look to thefuture. We remain citizens of the most multicultural country in the world and you tonight are a mirror of thatworld.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institutionis the charity that saves lives at sea.We provide a 24-hour lifeboat servicearound the coasts of the UK and RoI,and we rescue an average of 22people a day.

All our lifeboats are manned byvolunteers who give up their owntime to train hard and learn the skillsthey need in order to save lives. Oftenthey are called out in the middle of the night, in darkand stormy weather, risking their own lives to helpothers.

Our busiest lifeboat stations are right here on theThames in the heart of London. In 2010, the crews atChiswick and Tower stations carried out 720 rescuemissions and were on service on the river for almost400 hours. As the Thames is a tidal river, withdangerous currents, the London lifeboats aim to launchwithin 90 seconds of a request for help.

But what’s most remarkable is that every single thingwe do is funded by public donations. And you couldhelp us too, either by signing up as a crew member orby giving us your support. Goto rnli.org.uk to find out more.We can’t do anything withoutyou.6-b Hawthorn Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire SK9 1AA,
