POLITEKNIK BRUNEI MINISTRY OF EDUCATION

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR LEVEL 5 DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES

2018/2019 ACADEMIC SESSION DURATION: 3 YEARS

Candidates who wish to pursue their studies in a programme of their choice at Politeknik Brunei (PB) and who fulfill the minimum entry requirements are now invited to apply to Politeknik Brunei for the academic year 2018 / 2019. Successful applicants are expected to start their studies on 02 July 2018.

Applicants must note that fulfilling the specific entry programme requirements does not guarantee entry into PB’s programmes as admission to all programmes is competitive.

Applicants for admission to Level 5 Diploma programmes MUST satisfy the following minimum entry

requirements:-

[1] At least a Credit Six in Bahasa Melayu at GCE Ordinary Level (applicable only for Bruneians who are eligible for Government Scholarship).

[2] At least a Credit Six in Mathematics D or its equivalent OR Additional Mathematics at GCE Ordinary Level.

[3] At least a Credit Six in English Language at GCE Ordinary Level or its equivalent or an IELTS score of

6.0 or TOEFL minimum score 550.

[4] Fulfill and/ or satisfy the Programme Requirements for the Programme applied. [5] Attend and successful in an interview and/ or test conducted by PB as per requirement of the Programme

applied. Note:

[a] GCE Ordinary Level and IGCSE are benchmarked against one another where grade A – C at IGCSE are

equivalent to grade A – C at GCE Ordinary Level.

[b] The IELTS/TOEFL score reports are only valid for two years after the test and the validity period should not

expire before the beginning of the application for the relevant intake. [c] To be eligible for consideration for admission to the various programmes in Politeknik Brunei, candidates

must obtain between 5 to 26 points (inclusive) from the FIVE (5) relevant 'O' level subjects excluding Bahasa Melayu.

[f] Mature Applicants This refers to applicants who do not possess the Minimum Entry Requirements but have reached a minimum

age of 22 years with relevant working experience in related field. The Minimum Entry Requirement for Mature Applicants is as follows:

2.1 In-Service Applicants

All in-service applicants who are currently employed by the Government either in a permanent, temporary, month to month or open vote position will only be considered if their application forms are submitted through their respective Heads of Department as per PMO’s circular ref : 2/1991 and 27/1988 issued on 3 January 1991 and 6 September 1988]. 2.1.1 In service and applicants who are employed are required to follow the following procedure:

2.1.1.1 Each applicant is to complete ONE application form only. A softcopy of the application form is to be submitted to Politeknik Brunei before the dateline.

2.1.1.2 Application forms are available by requesting via PB email: [email protected]

2.1.1.3 All copies of certificates and documents attached to the application form are to be

certified by the applicant’s Head of Department / Employer.

2.1.1.4 The original copy of the application form is to be submitted officially by the applicant’s Head of Department/employer together with a “Confidential Report”.

2.1.1.5 For those private sector employees or daily rated personnel from any Government

Ministries, application forms are to be submitted through their respective Employers or Heads of Department, together with a “Confidential Report” as well as a complete and updated copy of “Service Record”.

2.1.1.6 The complete set of application forms together with all copies of certificates and related

documents attached, is to be submitted directly to Politeknik Brunei not later than Wednesday, 07 March 2018.

2.2 Other Applicants 2.2.1 All applications must be made ONLINE by visiting the HECAS portal at www.hecas.edu.bn.

2.2.2 Following the online HECAS application, all applicants are required to submit the softcopy

of: HECAS application form, certified true copies of Academic Result slip/ Certificate: O level, ND/ HNTec/ Diploma and relevant documents to Politeknik Brunei via email [email protected].

2.2.3 Accreditation letter from Brunei Darussalam National Accreditation Council (BDNAC) should be

obtained for non-local certification.

1. How and where do I apply?

2. What is the minimum CGPA in order to be eligible for application for Politeknik Brunei (PB)

Diploma Level 5 programmes?

The minimum CGPA to be eligible for PB Diploma Level 5 Programmes is as follows:

National Diploma ND (Level 4 in NQF)* in related field with GPA ≥ 2. [Based on a 3 points system]

Diploma (Level 4 in NQF) in related field with GPA ≥ 2.7 [Based on a 4 points system]

HNTec (Level 4 in NQF) in related field with GPA ≥ 2.7 [Based on a 4 points systems]

*NQF: National Qualification Framework

3. How much are the tuition fees?

B$3,600 per year

4. How many intakes are there per year?

Only ONE (1) INTAKE per year in July. Admission process usually starts in February as soon as ‘O’

level results have been released

5. How long does it take to finish the course?

3 Years inclusive of 6 months’ internship (except for courses offered by the School of Health

Sciences).

6. Can I apply for more than one course?

Yes, you can only apply for a maximum of 2 courses.

7. When is the application deadline?

Deadline of application through HECAS will be on the 28 February 2018.

8. When do I know that I am accepted for the course?

Announcement is normally made via HECAS and PB website.


9. If my application is unsuccessful, can I reapply?

Yes, it is possible for students to reapply in the following year.

10. What qualifications are acceptable?

Please refer to PB Admission Requirements 2018 available via website: www.pb.edu.bn

11. I failed my GCE ‘O’ level English, can I still apply?

Yes, we do consider IGCSE English at minimum grade C or IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 550 (More details on

our Admissions Requirements are available at http://www.pb.edu.bn from menu click: Study@PB -

Brochure).

12. Are there any special entry requirements for entry into the Polytechnic courses? Different courses may have different medical and other requirements. Successful candidates who

have applied to Level 5 Diploma in Health Sciences courses are required to go through prescribed

medical fitness examination and must be certified fit to follow the courses.

Students with colour blindness or hearing disability may have to undergo a test to determine their

suitability for admissions to some courses with colour vision and/or hearing requirements.

Unless otherwise stated, successful applicants must provide a self-declaration of their medical health

status upon enrolment.

13. Will accommodation be provided for those living away from Brunei Muara District?

There will be accommodation available for rent at The Core, UBD. However, room availability will be

very limited and candidates need to apply via the assistance of Student Affairs Department.

14. Is there any accommodation or transportation provided for students who will be studying

Lumut Campus?

Currently there is no accommodation provided. However, a private bus service is available at a

chargeable monthly fee decided by the selected bus company.

15. What are my chances to further study after completing my Level 5 Diploma at Politeknik

Brunei?

Our Level 5 Diploma programmes are equivalent to Higher National Diploma as endorsed by Brunei

Darussalam National Accreditation Council (BDNAC), Ministry of Education. Upon successful

completion, the next level of study is a Bachelor’s Degree for those not immediately seeking for

employment or career.

16. Can I change to another school after being accepted to study at Politeknik Brunei?

No, this is not permissible by Politeknik Brunei. Request for change of programmes within school as

well as change of school will not be entertained once students have been accepted and enrolled into

the chosen school. Therefore, choosing the right programme before applying to HECAS is very

important.

17. Is there any loan facility to purchase a new laptop?

Students can apply for loan through approved banks (terms and conditions apply).

18. I am a graduate from TVET and interested in applying courses at Politeknik Brunei but I am not

sure of my CGPA, how do I go about this?

We would strongly advise students to check with their previous college regarding the calculation of

CGPA. Please take note that such calculation may differ from one college to another due to

differences in weightage and credit schemes of the previous undertaken programme structure.

19. I am in my final year of TVET study and currently doing attachment, can I apply to further my

study at Politeknik Brunei?

You must complete your study with evidence of academic results being presented.

20. If my academic results are slightly below those required, will I still be considered for

admission?

No, all applicants must meet the minimum entry requirements.

21. I have a National Diploma (ND) qualification. Can I be considered as a direct-entry Year 2

student?

There is no direct-entry into the second year in Politeknik Brunei.

22. What is the language of instruction used in Politeknik Brunei?

All courses are conducted in English language except for Pengajian Melayu Islam Beraja (MIB) and

Pendidikan Islam modules.

23. Can IBTE graduates apply to Politeknik Brunei using their O level results?

Yes.


24. Will I be interviewed for admission into School of Health Sciences programmes?

All applicants that meet the minimum entry requirement for the course will be invited to attend the

Multiple Mini Interview (MMI). Interview usually takes place in PAPRSB Institute of Health Sciences,

UBD (subject to HECAS deadline).

Pembayaran yuran pengajian mestilah dibuat pada atau sebelum 31 Julai bagi setiap tahun akademik.

The payment for tuition fee must be made before or on 31 July of each academic year.

Pelajar boleh memohon pembayaran yuran pengajian secara ansuran. Untuk memohon, pelajar dikehendaki untuk melengkapkan

Borang Permohonan Ansuran dari Jabatan Perkhidmatan Kewangan, Politeknik Brunei dan hendaklah menghantar untuk mendapat

kebenaran sekurang-kurangnya dua (2) minggu sebelum tarikh akhir pembayaran yuran.

Student may apply for payment of the tuition fee in installments. To apply, complete the Installment Application Form obtainable

from Finance Services Department, Politeknik Brunei and submit for approval at least two (2) weeks before the first due date.

i) Jika tarikh akhir pembayaran jatuh pada hari kelepasan awam, hari bekerja seterusnya akan dikira.

If the due date falls on a public holiday, the succeeding working day will count.

ii) Bayaran lewat sebanyak $50.00 akan dikenakan jika yuran pengajian tidak dibayar mengikut waktu yang ditetapkan.

A late fee of $50.00 will apply if the tuition fee is not paid within the time-frame specified under the option of payment.

iii) Tempoh program Level 5 Diploma secara sepenuh masa adalah 3 tahun (6 semester), termasuk tiga (3) bulan

penempatan industry (Internship).

The duration of the full-time Level 5 Diploma is 3 years (6 semesters) which includes three (3) months of placement in

industry (Internship).

iv) Bagi sebarang lanjutan tempoh program, yuran-yuran mungkin dikenakan secara berkadar.

For any extension of a programme, fees may be charged proportionately.
