Welcome to our 2019 catalogue which we hope will give you lots of inspiration and ideas for your garden.

2018 was another successful year for us winning R.H.S Gold medals at Cardiff and Malvern shows and the plantsman’s award from the Cornwall Garden Society. We are delighted to announce that this year we will be R.H.S Master Grower at the R.H.S Cardiff Show. As the Master Grower we will have a special display in the marquee highlighting our daffodils and the work we do towards breeding and producing award winning blooms.

Our catalogue is packed with varieties that we have spent many years trialling and cultivating. A selection of the top new blooms is available in our new introductions. We continue to develop the website which has our full range and up to date availability.

Division 1 Trumpet Daffodils for garden and exhibition

Daffodils are so diverse in shape and colour they have been categorised into 13 divisions. Division 1 has

one flower to a stem; the corona (trumpet) is as long or longer than the perianth segments (petals). There

is also a colour code for both the petals and the trumpet, the colour code starts with the petals then the

trumpet, as an example the first picture on this page showing ‘Charlie Connor’ is classed as division 1, yellow

petals with orange trumpet (1y-o). The classification and colour codes are seen in the index and a guide to

classifications in the back of the catalogue.

Division 2 Large cup Daffodils for garden or exhibition

As with division 1 these have one flower to a stem, the corona (trumpet) is smaller than division one, it

should be more than one-third, but less than equal to the length of the perianth (petals).

All the daffodils in this catalogue will do well in both pots or in the garden, with perhaps the exception of

Division 8 that produce a lot of foliage, the colour combinations in this division seem to be limitless and will

certainly create an interest in the garden. When growing in pots keep them moist throughout the growing

season and for at least two weeks after flowering. See our planting guide at the back of the catalogue.

Again one flower to a stem; corona not more than one-third the length of the perianth segment.

These also have some amazing colour combinations and are sure to impress. A high pot ash fertilizer helps

with the colour and the general health of the bulb but remember not to use more than is recommended.

Our fertilizer should be use at a rate of 85grms per sq. meter and is best scattered after planting the bulbs.

One or more flowers to a stem, with doubling of the perianth segments or corona or both.

in windy weather, pots can be moved if necessary. Remember most daffodils prefer sunny aspects with

good drainage.

Division 5 Triandrus Hybrids for garden or exhibition

These delightful varieties of daffodils are the result of selective breeding where the species n.triandrus has

been introduced into its parentage; the resulting plants often have 2 or more flowers to a stem.

They are hardy and generally much dwarfer in stature which make them ideally suited to the windier

aspects of the garden or rockery.

Division 6 Cyclamineus Daffodils for garden or exhibition

One flower to a stem; perianth segments significantly reflexed.

These are shorter in height, if grown in shaded areas they are more likely to reach the maximum height

but are still suited to the front of the border or rockery. I also like to grow these in pots but its best to

plant them in the garden the following year, the bulb will then have more nutrients and room to develop,

giving you better flowers in years to come.

These vary in stature from dwarf to very tall. They generally have a good stiff stem that can withstand a

fair wind. Most have several flowers and are all sweetly scented.

If grown in the right conditions all daffodils will flower year after year but remember next year’s flower

is in the foliage. Don’t cut or tie the leaves, allow them to collapse and turn brown before you clear from

the garden.

Division 8 Tazetta hybrids for garden or exhibition

Characteristics of tazetta clearly evident; usually three to twenty flowers to a stout stem; perianth

segment spreading not reflexed. Usually fragrant.

These plants are the result of many years of breeding and can be divided into two types. They are with the

rare exception all quite big plants, some do have very tall stems and foliage. The first variety are more of

the true n.tazetta species in form. The species are generally found in warmer regions of southern Europe

and the Mediterranean. They are slightly tender and do require a hot dry summer to perform at their

best. We have great success with these and believe they are well worth trying when each stem could have

15 – 20 highly scented florets.

The second variety is the “poetaz”, these are slightly different in style and have fewer florets. The scent is

a mixture of n.tazetta and that of the n. poeticus from which these hybrids have derived. The poeticus part

of this hybrid makes these a much hardier flower that withstands our climate as well as any daffodil.

Division 9 Poeticus Hybrids for garden and exhibition

Usually one flower to a stem; perianth segment pure white; corona very short or disc shaped, usually with

a green and/or yellow centre and a red rim but sometimes of a single colour, flowers usually fragrant.

These flowers are commonly known as the ‘Pheasant Eye’ and have been breed from the old species.

Although the shape and colour have become more refined the poeticus characteristics are still clearly

evident. They are all scented and flower later in the spring continuing the daffodil season well into May.

The bulbs should be planted deep in good well drained soil that never completely dries out, this helps

them to keep cool. They are best left undisturbed allowing the bulbs to increase and create a better

display for future years’ enjoyment.

segments usually in two whorls of three.

b). Papillion Daffodils. Split-corona daffodils with the corona segments alternate to the perianth segments usually

very hardy. Plant them as you would any other daffodil either in pots or the garden and you will know doubt be

Daffodils distinguished solely by botanical name.

We have been acquiring these for many years and have taken great pride in maintaining the more unusual varieties.

We believe them all to be true to name but there seem to be some considerable variance to form. They are

however named as sent to us or identified over the years.

The species seem to resent being moved about but once settled are a joy to see in naturalized surroundings.

Some varieties are not always available in large quantities.

Miniature Daffodils for garden or exhibition

This section covers a multitude of divisions including division 10 Bulbocodium Daffodil.

Miniatures are daffodils with all its parts proportionately small, generally the flower will measure under 50mm.

Division 10, usually one flower to a stem; perianth segments insignificant compared with the dominant corona.

These are often seen in R.H.S or National Trust gardens flowering under old oak trees, this is clearly achievable

but the flowers prefer bare, slightly damp soil and to be left undisturbed. If planting in grassed areas, the grass

must be kept short but remember not to cut the daffodil foliage until the leaf has died back.

Historical Varieties

For many years it has been our passion to collect and preserve daffodils of bye gone years.

Today we have many varieties that are seen in old gardens, churches and the bordering hedges of the market

gardens in the late 1800s and early 1900s. These and many others now form an important part of our collection.

Some stocks are small and others still under assessment to ascertain the correct name.

We are pleased to offer the varieties listed here; we believe them to be true to name or have been confirmed by

knowledgeable enthusiasts.

PLANTING GUIDE FOR BULBS

62

ALLIUMSKeep bulbs dry and cool until ready to plant, they prefer an open sunny aspect with rich well drained soil, plant 10-20 cm deep the bigger bulbs deeper than the small varieties, top dress with a good general high potash fertilizer when planting and again each Autumn.

The foliage often turns brown at the tips at flowering this can be trimmed and removed; generally leave the foliage to die back naturally.

FRITILLARIAPlant these as soon as possible in the Autumn 5-10 cms deep and 15-20 cms apart in an Dappled light or slight shade, avoid very hot and dry situations, a good rich but well drained soil is best, but these bulbs should never become waterlogged as they will rot

Top dress with a good general fertilizer at planting, and again each autumn.

IRISPlant these as soon as possible in the Autumn in full sun and a well drained situation, the dwarf varieties should be 10 cm deep and 10 cm apart, they can be left undisturbed for best results, top dress annually with a good general fertilizer.

MUSCARIKeep cool and dry until ready to plant, choose a full sun to light shade situation and well drained, plant 10-12 cm deep and 10 cm apart top dress with a good general fertilizer annually, they are best left undisturbed.

CHIONODOXAPlant as soon as possible in the Autumn. 7-8cm deep and 5cm apart in an area that will have sunlight for at least half a day. The soil should be well drained. After flowering allow the foliage to die back naturally this will feed the bulbs for the following year.

Plant around the 10 to 12 cm deep and 10 to 12cm apart, if you need to add fertilizer do this at planting time and again as soon as the flowers have faded, high potash general fertilizer is best.

Remove the seed head as soon as the flower has finished and collect the fallen petals from the surrounding soil, allow the foliage to die back completely then lift the bulbs and store in a cool, dry and airy place.

The species and short Tulips can be left in the ground from year to year, but the Tall Hybrid Tulips do need to be lifted annually.

DAFFODILS Please note Daffodils are not edible

On arrival keep the bulbs dry and cool in an airy place until ready to plant.

The ideal aspect is in full sun or light shade; avoid the windy aspect unless you are planting the dwarf or miniature varieties.

All should be planted as soon as possible after receipt and certainly before the end of October as bulbs can start to deteriorate, the ground should be moisture retentive but with good drainage, Daffodils do not like to be completely water logged.

Plant at a depth of 3 times height of the bulb this can be at least 15 to 20 cm on top of the bulbs depending on the size and variety and with a space equivalent to 2 or 3 Bulbs, they can then be left for several years to develop, closer planting is fine but you will need to lift and divide much more often.

Avoid fertilizers with a high Nitrogen content as this will cause soft growth and encourage softness and susceptibility to fungal disease, use a general fertilizer with high Potash, spread this at planting time and give an annual top dressing in the autumn.

After flowering remove the dead flower heads this prevent seed setting and will direct the energy to the bulb, please let the foliage die back naturally, as the leaves produce the energy to produce next years bulb and flowers.

Daffodils in pots or containers can be a joy to see in the Conservatory or Greenhouse, use a good quality bulb fibre or compost and plant the bulbs only just below the surface, do not allow the pots to dry out at any time, you will need to keep a careful eye on them during the growing season, keep the pots in a cool dark spot or outside in a sheltered spot, bring them into the open once the bulbs are sprouting, avoid too much heat as this can over force the bulb and could cause the flower to abort.

Please ensure the pots are kept moist throughout the Winter and most important protect them from freezing as the roots and or the base plate of the bulb can separate and growth will be stunted and the bulb die and rot away.

Once the flowers are over, you can transplant them direct into the garden and allow them to die back naturally; they may take a season to get back to full vigour.

TULIPSKeep these dry and cool until you are ready to plant, the best time to plant Tulips is during October and November in a well drained situation with full light they will tolerate light shade.

Horticultural Classification

Whether of wild or cultivated origin, once a selection has been distinguished by a cultivar name it should be assigned to Divisions 1 - 12. Daffodils distinguished solely by botanical name should be assigned to Division 13.

Notes1. The characteristics for Divisions 5 to 10 are given for guidance only; they are not all necessarily expected to be present in every

cultivar assigned to those divisions.2. Divisions 12 and 13 are not illustrated owing to the wide variation in shape and size between the flowers involved.

Division 1 TrumpeT DaffoDil CulTivars

One flower to a stem; corona (trumpet) as long as, or longer than the perianth segments (petals)

Division 2large-cuppeD DaffoDil CulTivars

One flower to a stem; corona more than one-third, but less than equal to the length of the perianth.

Division 3small-CuppeD DaffoDil CulTivars

One flower to a stem; corona not more than one-third the length of the perianth segments.
