Ridge English: Week beginning 8.1.21
Hello Everyone!
Feeling chained to your screen and imprisoned by four walls? Want to wake up your brain with the freshest air on the planet? Need
to be one of the few members of the human race ever to experience the wildest, most awesome scenery on Earth? Read on for the
holiday of a lifetime!
Yes, it’s marketing time this week!! We’re going to remind ourselves about some of the persuasive writing techniques we’ve learnt
over the years, then we’re going to plan and write a brochure for a holiday to Antarctica.
Before that, though, we start the week with a Harry Potter Mystery day for Monday, and an English assessment in Tuesday’s
English lesson. Have a good week , everyone, and enjoy your break over half term.

Polar Riddles (just for fun, anytime you have a spare moment)
In the mood for a riddle? Can you solve the ones below? Maybe have a go at one yourself? The only rule is that it needs to be on an Antarctic theme.
(Answers to these appear on later pages this week.)
What am I? What am I?
I am ancient but I have no wrinkles. I am often loaded but I have no money.
I shift position but I have no limbs. I live with runners but I’m not an athlete.
I am colossal but I make not a sound. I am driven but I am not ambitious.
A famous mint borrows my name. I am sometimes pushed around and often pulled in many directions.
What am I? What am I?

Tuesday’s Lesson: Writing assessment
Today. we would like you to do some writing on your own and show off your skills. Because it this is an assessment, it is im-
portant that the work is entirely your own.
Here’s what you need to do:-
Go to the link below and watch the animation, The Arctic Circle.
We would like you to write the story of what happened in The Arctic Circle and then write a sequel (what happened next).
Write in the third person (– he. She, etc).
Remember to check your spelling and punctuation and that your sentences make sense.
You will need to describe the setting and the characters . Think also about the characters’ thoughts and feelings and why
they do what they do.
Try to include some of the writing techniques that you have been practising.
You should take between 1—1.5 hours, including watching the animation once or twice, quick plan and writing.

LO: To use persuasive writing techniques
To design a marketing brochure
TASK 1
Go to https://www.explore.co.uk/holidays/antarctica-in-depth which is a real, online brochure for a holiday to Antarctica.
What persuasive writing techniques are used to make the customer want to book this holiday?
Who is the brochure aimed at?
Gather information (and illustrations) that you need for your brochure. (eg details about cabins and meals on the ship,
map, temperatures, etc)
TASK 2
Decide the layout of your brochure and sketch it out (in pencil) on a piece of A4. How will you divide the page? How
many sections will you need? Where will your pictures go? What headings will you use? etc
Now you are ready to write each section, making sure you use the persuasive language techniques we’ve have been
looking at and practising.
Make sure your brochure is eye-catching.
You have today’s lesson and tomorrow’s lesson to write and edit your brochure.

TASK
Finish your brochure.
Now check that you have used all the persuasive writing techniques on page 6 (Wednesday’s lesson). Where can
you add more / make improvements?
Check thoroughly for spelling and grammar mistakes. If a company is sloppy about its advertising material, it
might be equally casual about its responsibility to its customers (eg their safety). I certainly wouldn’t be making
a booking with them!!
