Paying attention to your effective stack size can be crucial to the
success of your game.
www.floattheturn.com
Not paying attention to it is one of the greatest mistakes that tournament players make.

In his Book Secrets of Professional Tournament
Poker, Volume 1: Fundamentals and How to Handle Varying Stack Sizes,
Jonathan Little explains:
“...say you have 100BBs (Big Blinds) in the small blind and it’s folded to you. Your raising range should be vastly
different if your opponent has 10BBs as opposed to 100BBs.”

No matter how big the game is, effective stack size is an important thing to be aware of...
www.floattheturn.com
…but it is especially important if you are in a hand with only one player. You will only win or lose however much the other player has, therefore you have to
consider the smaller stack size.

Be aware! Effective stack size is only important in no limit and pot limit games where the
chance is not likely that the players will
get their whole stack into the pot.

This example will help you to be2er
understand:

****************************************
*player A has 100BBs in his stack
*player B has 5BBs in his stack
Because player B can only bet 5BBs, the effecAve stack size is 5BBs because, no ma2er what, that
is all that player B can bet.

The effective stack size is…
Now, consider that player A has 120BBs and player B has 150BBs.

120BBs! This simple concept is easy to
understand in holdem poker, yet
it is extremely important for
your game.

Jonathan Little expands on considering effective stack size in a multi-player game:
“So, if you are in the cutoff with 50BBs, the buEon (dealer) has 10BBs, the small blind has 20BBs and the big blind has 30BBs, you’re in a tough situaHon, as you should play quite differently against each player...”
www.floattheturn.com
“...In this situaHon, I will generally raise only hands with which I am willing to call all-‐in from the smallest stack all of the Hme and the other stacks some of the Hme.”

According to Little, there can be a benefit to having the short stack...
www.floattheturn.com
Players who may have 100BBs or more in their stack sizes can tend to ignore you. Still, being the player with the shortest stack can give you an edge and yield you profit in the end.

A player with a short stack who knows how to play the game and is willing to put it on
the line and go all-in, can do that with a wide range of cards and potentially clean up.
That player can be very dangerous at any table.
