Families

•  600,000 families are homeless annually

•  20% on public assistance - in their lifetime

•  Usually due to some unforeseen financial crisis •  Inability to Find Affordable Housing

Page 9: Point-in-Time Count

Youth •  A total of 939,903 students experiencing homelessness were

enrolled in public schools in the 2009-2010 school year.

•  Familial disruption: divorce, neglect, or abuse

•  Large majority are short-term

•  ‘Small’minority are long-term homeless: 50,000

•  A particular challenge for several reasons

•  Very little definitive data on the population

•  Often don’t interact with standard homeless assistance programs or government agencies

•  Solutions often not applicable to minors (who are, for example, ineligible to rent an apartment)

•  Special challenges mean that solutions to youth homelessness require targeted innovation
