Why did people go on Crusades? The Muslims have been destroying Churches. Criminals and robbers went as a punishment.
Some went to claim land for themselves. Some went because they did not want their Holy
Land being taken over by Muslims.
Some went because lots of people from their
villages were going.
Some went to bring back spices and riches to sell.
Some went to impress the ladies. Muslims had been killing fellow Christians.
Pope Urban II had made speeches that encouraged
people to go.
Some went to get their sins forgiven.
People were told that if they went on Crusade and
took up the cross, they would automatically get a
place in Heaven.
Some were professional Knights and were excited
by the thought of fighting.
Some felt it was their duty to go.
Many were excited to see and experience the
world. 3
1095, Pope Urban II promised the knights of Europe forgiveness of their sins if they went on a
Crusade to win back Jerusalem for Christianity. Many responded by "taking the cross" and showed this act by cutting out red crosses before sewing them into
their tunics.

An army of knights and nobles captured Jerusalem in 1099. It was claimed that the Crusaders killed the Muslims until the streets ran red with blood. The
loss of Jerusalem was a terrible blow to the Muslims.

Saladin 7
• The Crusaders failed to keep any of the territory they conquered, but they discovered many new things, including better castle design, gunpowder, science, medicine and numbers that were easier to use than Roman numerals.
• Many Crusaders committed what we would regard today as criminal atrocities.
