How class teachers have demonstrated the children using ambitious vocabulary both in spoken and written language. This has come from reading all genres of texts where poetry has formed a part of this.

In my class I have focused on poetry as a way to begin my science topics to stimulate interest and questions and have made it a focus of our Key stage assemblies by compiling an anthology of poems we have shared.

In my class I have also focused on a lot of Pie Corbett poetry as the language is rich but often unusual and we are using a lot of his talk for writing anyway.

Themed poems – Carol Ann Duffy, ‘The Hat’ and leading to themed poems from one of hers that the children had enjoyed. Science linked poems about the skeleton, history linked poetry about chimney sweeps or using a poetry book as our class text, e.g. ‘Read Me Out Loud’ chosen by Nick Toczek and Paul Cookson.
