Structure of Poems

Poems are written in many ways. Some poems are written using blank verse, rhyme and using paragraphs, which in poetry are called stanzas.

Blank verse is poetry with no rhyme, lines or stanzas

Rhyme – the sounds at the end of the lines are the same (although they may be spelt differently).

Stanzas – the paragraphs of poetry that have a set number of lines.

Looking closely at ‘Silver’

• Find examples of simile, metaphor, alliteration and repetition and write them into your books.

• Underline each of the words that you are not sure about. Write each of them into your book and find their meaning using a dictionary.

Rhyming Schemes

• Look at the rhymes in the poem ‘Jack Frost’ by Cecily Pike

• In each stanza, mark with an ‘A’, ‘B’ or ‘C’ the similar rhyming words.

You need to write your own list of adjectives using every letter of the alphabet.

The first person finished gets a merit, but you have to make sure that they are all adjectives!!
