Structure of Poems

Poems are written in many ways. Some poems are written using blank verse, rhyme and using paragraphs, which in poetry are called stanzas.

Blank verse is poetry with no rhyme, lines or stanzas

Rhyme – the sounds at the end of the lines are the same (although they may be spelt differently).

Stanzas – the paragraphs of poetry that have a set number of lines.

‘Silver’ by Walter de la MareSlowly, silently, now the moonWalks the night in her silver shoon; This way, and that, she peers, and seesSilver fruit upon silver treesOne by one the casements catchHer beams beneath the silvery thatch; Couched in his kennel, like a logWith paws of silver sleeps the dog; From their shadowy cote the white breasts peepOf doves in a silver feathered sleep;A harvest mouse goes scampering by,With silver claws, and silver eye;And moveless fish in the water gleam,By silver reeds in a silver stream.

Jack Frost – Cecily PikeLook out! Look out!Jack Frost is about! He’s after our fingers and

toes; And, all through the night,The gay little spriteIs working where nobody

knows.

He’ll climb each tree,So nimble is he,His silvery power he’ll shake;To windows he’ll creep,

And while we’re asleep,Such wonderful pictures he’ll

make.

Across the grassHe’ll merrily passAnd change all its greeness

to white; Then home he will go,And laugh ‘Ho! Ho! Ho!What fun I have in the

night!’
