In poetry the sound and meanings of words are combined to express feelings, thoughts, and ideas.

The poet chooses words carefully.

Poetry is usually written in lines.

What is Poetry?

Poetry Elements

Page 4: Poetry ppt

It is the flow of the beat in the poem.

It gives poetry a musical feel.

It can be fast or slow, depending on mood and subject of poem.

You can measure rhythm in meter, by counting the beats in each line.

Writers love to use interesting sounds in their poems. These sound devices include:

Rhymes are words that end with the same sound. Like Cat in the Hat. This is the most common sound device in Poetry. However, not all poetry has to rhyme.

Rhyme

Page 9: Poetry ppt

Repetition occurs when poets repeat words, phrases, or lines in a poem.

It creates a pattern

It increases rhythm

It strengthens feelings, ideas and mood in a poem

Repetition

Let it go!Let it go!

Page 10: Poetry ppt

Alliteration is the repetition of the first consonant sound in words as in the nursery rhyme: ‘‘Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.’’

Alliteration

Page 11: Poetry ppt

They are words that represent the actual sound of something. Examples are:

The dog barks

The cat purrs

Thunder booms

Rain drips

Clock ticks

Figurative language or figures of speech are tools that writers use to create images, or ‘‘paint pictures’’ in your mind.

Similes, metaphors, personification, hyperboles and symbolism are 5 figures of speech that create imagery.

Figurative Language

Page 14: Poetry ppt

A simile compares 2 things using the words ‘‘like’’ or ‘‘as’’. Comparing one thing to another creates a vivid image. Example:

Jackneisha ran fast like a cheetah.

Simile

A metaphor compares 2 things that are different by using the words: is, are, was, were.

It gives the qualities of one thing to something that is quite different.

Personification gives human qualities and feelings to things that are not human- like animals or objects.

A hyperbole is an outrageous exaggeration that emphasizes a point, and can be ridiculous or funny. Examples:

You snore louder than a train engine.

I’m so hungry I could eat a horse.

Puerto Rico is the most beautiful place in the world.

Hyperbole

Symbolism occurs when a word, which has meaning in itself, is used to represent something entirely different. Examples are:

Using an image of the Puerto Rican flag to represent patriotism and a love for one’s country.

Using an apple to represent education.

Using a heart to represent love.
