Fat Is Not a Fairy TaleBy Jane Yolen

Free Response

I am thinking of a fairy tale,Cinder Elephant,Sleeping Tubby,Snow Weight, where the princess is notanorexic, wasp-waisted,flinging herself down the stairs.

I am thinking of a fairy tale,Hansel and Great,Repoundsel,Bounty and the Beast, where the beautyhas a pillowed breast, and fingers plump as sausage.

I am thinking of a fairy talethat is not yet written, for a teller not yet born, for a listener not yet conceived, for a world not yet won, where everything round is good:the sun, wheels, cookies, and the princess.

I can say I connect a lot with this poem, as I agree with the ideology that the author proposes on it. First of all, I think that throughout the poem, Jane Yolen presents a problem that is now common in our society: stereotypes. We all have to be a specific size in order to look good, and most important, in order to FEEL good.

In this poem, the author illustrates how today being round is classified as ugly and bad and she also expresses her frustration and desire to change (like she did in the last two lines, where she says “…where everything round is good: the sun, wheels, cookies, and the princess.”) However, Yolen also thinks that our world is not yet prepare to realize how wrong we are.

Therefore, I do think that “Fat is not a Fairy Tale”

Free ResponsePoliticsby William Butler

In the poem Politics by WilliamButler, the author uses some imagesto valorize the personal over thepublic. Maybe trough this poemhe’s criticizing politics by sayingthat how can one prefer to beinvolved with a “women”,which in this case represents thesexual desire of humanity, than to beinvolved in politics (which is afundamental issue on society).

The speaker does not says politicsare not important, he just thinks thatusually the idea of sexuality isstronger for a person than politicalissues.

How can I, that girl standing there,My attention fixOn Roman or on RussianOr on Spanish politics?Yet here's a travelled man that knowsWhat he talks about,And there's a politicianThat has read and thought,And maybe what they say is trueOf war and war's alarms,But O that I were young againAnd held her in my arms!

“Do You Have Any Advice For Those of Us Just Starting Out?"By: Ron Koertge

Give up sitting dutifully at your desk. Leaveyour house or apartment. Go out into theworld.

It's all right to carry a notebook but acheap one is best, with pages the color ofweak tea and on the front a kitten or aspace ship.

Avoid any enclosed space where more thanthree people are wearing turtlenecks.Beware any snow-covered chalet with deertracks across the muffled tennis courts.

Not surprisingly, libraries are a good placeto write. And the perfect place in a libraryis near an aisle where a child a year or twoold is playing as his mother browses theranks of the dead.

Often he will pull books from thebottom shelf. Thon brown, he builds atower. And the higher it gets, the widerhe grins.

You who asked for advice, listen: Whenthe tower falls, be like that child. Laughso loud everybody in the world frownsand says,"Shhhh.“ The title, theauthor's name, the brooding photoon the flap mean nothing. Red book onblack, gray book.

Then start again.

I feel a real connection with this poem because of the fact that itwas written to give an advise to people who are starting a newlife alone in the world, and I’m about to leave my home and to startan independent life in the US. In this poem, the author uses lotsof symbol to express his meaningful theme, which I consider is amini description about our world: competitive, full of obstacles(for example: the child represent a man in a competitive world; thebooks represent the steps to gain success; and the tower made bybooks is the success that man has achieved throughout his life)

Finally, the poem gives the reader a great message: Even ifyou fall down from the tower of success, the best way tooverpass this situation is to laugh of your fail, start over again andyou’ll see everything is going to be better for you.

Since some times agoI’ve had a single questionThat nobody in houseHave wanted to answer: When two people are dating,They hold their hands togetherAnd they give each otherKisses on their cheeks til they get red

But what comes next in theirrelationship? That’s something I don’t knowMaybe is something terribleMy mum says I´m not old enough

I think she’s exaggeratingNothing can be that badFor two people who love each otherWith such a love like that  “You’ll understand when you grow up"My dad always saysThat's why I beg my GodTo grow up as quickly as possibleIn no more five sex. F

Running, running –Tall, green monstersThat tower over the sleeping creaturesMake even darker the coal black nightAnd hide the eternal hunt Nowhere in sight – Running, running –Pearls of sweat gently caress the skinWhile the tendons stretch and the muscles pulseDull thorns and coarse dirt beneathAnd even deeper the skullsNow it’s in the trees – Up where the sun burns the pointy leavesUp where the burnt leaf is seen only by the birdsUp where spirit looms in-betweenThat’s where It will be.

Hey you, Politician,I have some questions for you.Nothing personal.I wonder how you feel... Dear Mayor,I know you're a busy man.But people wonder, I wonder. I’m wonderingIf you have some time to answer a few questions,They are simple, don’t worry. You have eyes, eardrums and unfortunately amouth. You can speak. You have no excuses. Picture these;A starved child works on the streets.Do your heartbeats boost or slow down?Do they really show a change?Do you have at least one heart? Some mom is a housewife,Goes into a distant house other than hers,Dressed in some scarlet attire andWith glitter all over her body.I think it is a brothel. From up there, what do you think?People see, I see. Are you blind?

Dear Governor,I often see displaced people on the streets, On foot going from car to car with their arms held Straight out.Aren’t they begging for something?Do they live there?I go to school. I know the alphabet. What about them? Dear President, Honestly, people pay taxes as well as my parents. Some money is flowing somewhere, I guess.Where is it?How is it possible that there are millions of empty Pockets, While few people have no more space in theirs for a Penny? You go to sleep, no problem. Dear Politician, I do not know whether it is prudent o notWhat I will ask you nowBut I think I deserve to be heard...Do you feel guilty when, while you are enjoying a juicy Caviar for lunch,Outside your house, just some steps away in the cornerThere are three families that haven’t even ate Breakfast?Do you even know what the word dignity means?

Oh please, Dear God...

With love,One of your many victims.
