Poetics of Space | Jonathan Beer & Michael Chiarello November 1st – 24th, 2014 Opening reception: Saturday, November 1st, 5 – 7 p.m. Southampton, NY – Tripoli Gallery is pleased to present Jonathan Beer and Michael Chiarello in a two-man show titled Poetics of Space. The exhibition will be on view at 30a Jobs Lane from November 1st through November 24th, with a public opening reception on Saturday, November 1st from 5 to 7 p.m. Poetics of Space brings together sculpture by local artist Michael Chiarello and paintings by Jonathan Beer—two artists whose work takes divergent approaches to space and spatial concerns yet comes together aesthetically in a balance of forcefulness and poetics. The title for the exhibition is borrowed from Gaston Bachelard’s 1958 text, La poetique de l'espace; a simultaneous critique of poetry and philosophical search for meaning in all spaces life occupies. With use of thin lines, Chiarello transforms steel into an open, breathable form that naturally takes into account both positive and negative space; inviting the viewer to not only observe but exist within the space of the work. Jonathan Beer’s work challenges our notions of space within the 2-dimensional canvas, going beyond traditional illusionistic devices as he simultaneously constructs and deconstructs pathways leading in and out of the picture plane; transitioning between purely abstract and recognizable forms. Jonathan Beer was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1988 and received his BFA from School of Visual Arts in 2010 and an MFA from the New York Academy of Art in 2012. He was awarded a 3rd Year Post Graduate Fellowship at the New York Academy of Art for 2013. Beer has had solo shows at MDC Museum of Art + Design in Miami, FL; Kathleen Cullen Fine Art, NY; Georgia Tech’s Ferst Center for the Arts, Atlanta, GA, among others. His work has been exhibited internationally at Galerie Delta in Rotterdam, Netherlands and at the Siauliai Art Gallery in Lithuania. In 2011, he co- founded Art-Rated, a blog dedicated to articles and interviews on the contemporary art scene. He has been in two group shows at Tripoli Gallery in 2013 and 2014. Beer currently lives and works in Newburgh, NY. Michael Chiarello was born in New York in 1979 and grew up in Northport, Long Island.
