•Mr. Chuck Sullivan completed a five-day poetry workshop with six ninth-grade English classes.•He worked with Mrs. Mary Naber, English teacher; Amber Nance, EC teacher; Mrs. Cheryl Jeffries, English teacher; Tim Parsons, student teacher.•Approximately 150 students participated in the experience.•Twelve teachers participated in either the actual teaching throughout the experience or the after-school workshop.
