PoE Scenario

The PSE (Power Source Equipment) is the equipment that provides power to PDs. IEEE 802.3af defines two types of power source equipment: Endpoint and Mid-span (i.e. PoE Switch).

A PD (Powered Device) is a device that is either drawing power or requesting power from PSE. The specification involves delivering 44~57 volts of DC power over unshielded twisted-pair wiring.

Q1: Why use PoE?

Ans.: PoE application brings many advantages to an installation:

a) Time & cost saving: reduce the time and money without installing electrical power

b) Flexibility: the end device, e.g. IP Camera or wireless access point (AP) can be located everywhere without being tethered to an electrical outlet.

c) Safety: PoE Delivery is designed to protect network equipment from overload, underpoweringand incorrect installation. Furthermore, it can be backed-up by UPS to increase the reliability.

d) Smart Power Budget: Compliant with Power Classification , the PSE could allocate power budget for other PDs, whereby a (or more) PD indicates that it complies with power class 2 (max. 6,49 watts) or class 1 (max. 3.84W), but not class 3 (max. 12.95W). Inplementing this scheme, the PSE Device (PoE Switch) couldsupport more PDs (e.g. IP Phones or IP Camera).

Q2: How is FSP280-20FGBBD used at PoE Scenario?

Ans.: FSP280-20FGBBD can be installed inside Switch as PoE Switch, and can also be installed inside

a Multiport Midspan in between Non PoE Network Switch and End Devices (e.g. IP Camera). For such Midspan, the ports are designed in a 1 to 1 ratio (coming in port 1 from Switch transferred to port 1 PoE at Midspan)

Q3: What does it mean IEEE802.3af PoE v.s. 802.3at PoE Plus? the application of PoE Plus (High power PoE)?

Ans.: The 802.3af POE standard is applied for most network devices that require up to 12.95 watts of

electrical power. The 802.3at, or PoE Plus, nearly doubles the electrical power to powered devices, up to 25.5 watts.

PoE Plus Switches or Injectors can recognize 802.3af powered devices andenable PoE to them as normal. PoE Plus means a more complete range ofPoE-powered network equipment, e.g. outdoor IP Cameras with externalheater/blower, Pan/Zoom/Tilt surveillance functions or multichannelwireless access points.

Q4: Other than FSP280-20FGBBD, does FSP have any other PoEproducts?

Ans.: So far, FSP has released 220W/250W/280W PoE Flex PSU. FSP plans to launch 350W/ 400W/

460W/ 550W PoE PSU at 2016, and will also undertake the development of 550W/650W PoERedundant PSU.
