"Podcasting is a term used to describe a collection of technologiesfor automatically distributing audio and video programs over theinternet ...Podcasting enables independent producers to create self-published, syndicated "radio shows," and gives broadcast radio ortelevision programs a new distribution method.

Any digital audio player or computer with audio-playingsoftware can play podcasts....

The term "podcast," however, still refers largely to audiocontent distribution. A podcast is not the same as awebcast, which normally refers to a show distributed bystreaming media."

Podcasting is the term used to refer to the act of making and broadcasting podcasts. People who make and broadcast shows through podcasting are known as podcasters.

Podcasting is the delivery method of transferring multimedia files (Podcasts) over the internet for use with personal computers and mobile devices (Wikipedia, 2006). It is a digital audio technology which is made possible by transference software known as RSS and Atom. RSS (see appendix) is actually a group of formats created for media exchange via the web. Atom was a format created to address weaknesses and inconsistencies found in RSS. (The interested reader is directed to Wikipedia for an excellent comparison of Atom versus RSS). Atom is also created from industry standards HTTP and XML.

Podcast subscribers choose when and how to listen to the events, without encumbrances like the scheduling of internet radio. It is a relatively simple process from the subscriber’s point of view. One has (or purchases) a podcast client receiver, the client takes care of checking for new shows. This function can be configured for automatic retrieval, and allows easy retrieval/listening on portable devices (e.g. MP3 players, cell phones, etc.) or a personal computer.

Although the term podcast is a derivation of iPod (an Apple MP3 player) and broadcast, an iPod is not necessary for broadcasting or listening functions. We believe the original pioneers of this technology were Apple iPod users, hence the term. Any computer that contains programs (e.g. Quicktime or Mediaplayer) that can decode MP3 are suitable for podcast download and playback.

Podcasts are dispensed across the internet via syndication feeds in a scheme similar to “push” technology. The provider decides which content files will make up the feeds, while the subscriber decides which files are selected for download. There is also a “pull” aspect to the process as the subscriber has the freedom to choose, or pass, on the wide array of content.

“Podcasting is an automatic mechanism whereby multimedia computer files are transferred from a server to a client, which pulls down XML files containing the Internet addresses of the media files. In general, these files contain audio or video, but also could be images, text, PDF, or any file type” (Wikipedia).

The provider first makes a file (podcast episode) and provides availability on the internet via a public webserver. The existence of this file is acknowledged by a reference embedded in another file known as the feed (a list of the URLs containing the addresses of the episodes). The feed is published in RSS/Atom format and this is where information like: dates, titles, and descriptions of series and episodes are found. Social/public podcasting allows multiple authors to contribute episodes to a single feed. This feed is then posted on the webserver and the feed URL is broadcast.

Steps that could be used to produce your own podcast:

1: Record sound using a digital audio recorder or an MP3 player with a recording function, such as an iPod, and a microphone. Or, you can skip this step by recording directly onto a computer’s hard drive via the machine's imbedded microphone.

2: Transfer the sound from your recording device to a computer.

3: Edit the sound and add music, voice-overs, or other audio elements using production software such as...open-source software like Audacity.

4: Compress the finished product into an MP3 format.

5: Post the audio on a Web server.

• Record lectures for students to listen to on iPods. For example, absent students are able to retrieve the information missedand remain on track with the course material.

• Radio stations can discuss current school events, classroomevents, and local community events. For instance, studentsmay report current events occurring either in the classroomor school.

• Lesson plans can be altered and enhanced. For instance, if a teacher were to present a lesson on fire safety, students can create songs. Without podcasting, students would share their songs with the class, but would not have access to them beyond the classroom. However, with podcasting, students can podcast theirsongs with a musical background and share it withother classrooms that are studying fire safety.

• Elementary school students create Internet audio shows. For instance, 3rd grade students host different segments on soundand light. Segments consist of information on sound and light, interviews with experts on the areas, and a musical segment.

• Students can share information about a Social Studiestopic and its findings. For instance, students researchingthe Civil War podcast their research and share it with other classrooms.

• A class can go on a virtual trip to the Zoo as a tour podcast. For example, if students are learning about the habitat ofbears, students will be able to use the podcast as a way tobecome interactive and engaged in the learning contentwithout actually being there.

• Audio files are not suitable for technical explanations.• With podcasts, it may not be so easy to isolate the information that you want the students to concentrate on.• Podcasts can negatively affect the important teacher- student interaction.• Educational standards for podcasting are not universal.• Space and storage requirements could be prohibitive and have to be considered.• Copyrights violations could be a major concern much like the unrestrained downloading of songs and movies.• May provide an excuse for already motivated students to cut class thinking the work is easily accessed later.
