Goal: Use audio enabled Web 2.0 resources to enhance instruction across disciplines, even audio challenged disciplines such as computer science

At the completion of the lesson, participants will be able to: • Name 1 source with multiple audio feeds in a subject area • Name 1 source to search for new audio feeds for your courses • Subscribe and listen to syndicated audio • Name 1 web service which can be used to create syndicated

Significance of Web 2.0

• Advantages of AJAX :• robust, two-way interaction with the user• rich media elements such as audio and video• no need to install or maintain software

• Disadvantages: • bandwidth heavy, outages, ephemeral

• Limitations: • Highly visual, complex information.• Early studies showed that sciences are less well

suited to audio lectures than the humanities

Podcasting 101

• When can you listen to a podcast?• In real time or any time. “Time-shifted”

• Where can you listen to a podcast? What do you need?• At your computer or anywhere using an iPod or other

portable media player• Why podcast?

• Time shifted communication allows for learning “just in time”, and better documentation of communication, and therefore of knowledge

• One expert many learners • Find an authentic audience for student work.

• What do you need?• A computer and microphone (or a digital voice recorder, or a

telephone).

• More effective review. Can pair with lecture review quiz.

• Students are focused on lecture not recording words.• In seminars or for some segments or regular lectures,

precast lectures and use class time for problems.• Why not?

How to make a podcast

• Record audio in the Mp3 format. • Use a digital recorder which records in Mp3

format.• Or plug a USB headset with earphone and

microphone into your computer. Record audio with Audacity Mp3 recorder. Save it as an MP3 file.

• Upload the Mp3 file to your blog, wiki, or other webpage.

• Creat an RSS feed so that subscribers can receive new audio when added.
