Havelock Man threatens stranded motorist
with weapon A Havelock man has been arrested on drug possession charges, after
he had threatened a stranded motorist.
According to the Pocahontas County Sheriff’s Office, on
Wednesday evening just after 6pm, they
received an emergency call from a stranded motorist a few miles
north of Pocahontas on Highway 4. The
motorist stated that his vehicle broke down, and he walked up to a farm driveway to a house to get help. At
that point, a male subject reportedly came out of the house, pointed a handgun in the motorist’s face, yelled
threatening statements, and demanded that the motorist leave the property immediately.
Pocahontas County Sheriff Bob Lampe and a deputy responded to the call, where they found the home
owner, 35 year old Daniel Jon Schug of Havelock, Iowa. It was determined that Schug was under the
influence of a controlled substance.
Upon further investigation, a marijuana grow operation was discovered at Schug’s residence, which
contained just under 100 marijuana plants with a street value of approximately 80 thousand dollars. Metham-
phetamine, numerous drug paraphernalia, and numerous firearms were also found at the residence. Schug was
in possession of a concealed weapons permit issued by the Pocahontas County Sheriff’s Office, and Sheriff
Lampe immediately revoked his permit to carry a firearm.

Welcome to Ken’s Corner
(Written by Ken Gibson of Turbine Music and Karaoke)
Saturday, July 14th, 2012
Tonight we (Turbine Music and Karaoke) were asked to MC a party in Storm Lake, Iowa Called
Gen X - II. We had four live bands there, with us DJing before and after each band. There was a little bit of
everything for every taste, oops..... we forgot opera, oh well, maybe next year. Yes, you heard that right, Tur-
bine Music and Karaoke had been invited back to next years event, GenX - III. IAK, out of Fort Dodge, IA
started out the nights live entertainment with Rap. Following second for the night was another band from the
Fort Dodge, IA area, Bedspin, who treated us to Punk Rock, I am not a big fan of Punk Rock, however I really
enjoyed this band. 3rd on the program of live music was a metal group called Sinister Theory, and the bassist is
none other than our own Nancy Condit's Daughter, Danielle Waites. She was so passionate in the playing that
she began to bleed all over her guitar, yet kept playing. The music was awesome, and the Lead singer, took a
knee and proposed to his Lady Love.......She said YES, and the crowd went wild with applause for the happy
couple. Congrats you two. The Live music portion of the evening was concluded by another local band called
Blues Driven, featuring our good friend Ted CJ Hoffman on lead guitar and vocal. They played the classic rock
hits from the 70's and '80's. Oh man, now I really feel "OLD" because that was the new stuff when I was young,
now they are calling it classics. Hmmm..... does that mean that I am a Classic also?! Turbine filled in music be-
tween the sets, and before and after the Live music. A fun time seemed to be had by all that attended, and I have
to say that this was one of the most awesome nights that I have had the pleasure of being involved with. Many
thanks to Roland Gerodias, who set this whole thing up with Ron Sergeant, and Danny Lenninger, between the
two of them, this old man only had to circulate, press flesh with the crowd, and meet new and interesting peo-
ple. I want to thank the People who attended the GenX -II party tonight, without you it just wouldn't have been
a party, and I must say, they all had fun without DRAMA. Kudos to Everyone who attended. Lastly, but per-
haps most importantly, I want to give a HUGE shout out to Ron Sergeant, for putting on this event, and for ask-
ing us to be a part of this special evening and Just so that she won't cry, I had better say, Thank You for coming
and posting your wonderful pictures Holly Newhouse. LOL I Love You girlfriend. That's it for this edition of
Kenny's Corner. Take Care and God bless you all. -Kenny Gibson-

Josh Walsh, City Attorney arrived at 6:12 p.m. per the council’s request. Krips questioned him about nuisance abatement
letters. He explained that letters written to residents give them the opportunity to address the council before legal action
is taken. Cars without licenses were discussed on what can be done with them. Violations can be run through the city
council with payments being accessed to the property owner’s taxes. Salvage yards were discussed, along with the city
mowing lawns. Spraying can be done by the city man with over the counter product. Discussion was held on how to take
care of the eye sore houses in town. Council’s first step is to contact the owners.

the Mayor to proceed with getting three estimates for cost of repair, with a second by Barth. Ayes: All Nays: None
Mike Flannigan from Emmetsburg has a wood chipper that he would bring to town and take care of the brush piles for
$700. After discussion, the issue was tabled until next month.
Paul Henderson’s yard has been mowed.
Dick Hoover asked the council about removing the lien on his property since he has been making progress on cleaning it
up. The issue was tabled.
Hoover stated that the Klinger property needs to have the rocks picked up so it would save on the mower blades.
Gaylord Henderson arrived at 7:16 p.m. and requested permission from the council to remove the sidewalk in front of his
property. Tree roots have caused it to raise and become a hazard. A motion was made by Bunting, seconded by Krips to
grant permission for him to remove this sidewalk. Ayes: All Nays: None

ceiling tile and fresh paint be furnished by the city with the firemen doing the labor. The council suggested seeing what
the floor was like under the existing carpet. A motion by Barth, seconded by Vader to allow the fireman $300 to $500 for
supplies. Ayes: All Nays: None

Man Shoots own genitals and ends up in Jail
OKLAHOMA CITY, July 17 (UPI) -- A felon was arrested in Oklahoma City for possession
of a firearm after he told police he shot himself in the genitals, officials said.
Tavares Donnell Colbert, 36, shot himself in the genitals Saturday near Interstate 35 while
testing a gun he bought on the street in Kansas to see if it functioned properly before selling it,
The Oklahoman reported.
Colbert drove himself to the hospital and police were alerted soon after, the newspaper said.
He was arrested on a complaint of possession of a firearm when he was medically cleared.
Colbert was convicted in 2003 of a felony possession of a controlled and dangerous substance
with intent to distribute charge.
New App claims to rescue people from Bad Dates
(Reuters) - Most people have been there, trapped on an awkward date that is going nowhere.
But relief could be on the way with a new app that provides an incoming rescue call.
The Bad Date Rescue app, which was launched by the dating website eHarmony.com this
week, lets users arrange for a call to appear on their iPhone to graciously allow them to bow
out if a date isn't going well.
"There are all sorts of reasons for why people would want to get out of a date," said Arvind
Mishra, director of product management at eHarmony. "We can all sympathize because we
have all been on bad dates in our lifetime."
The free app includes several ways to set up a rescue. Users can pick a number from their ad-
dress book for the call, for example from their mother or a friend. It the person's picture is
stored on the app it will appear on the screen when the call comes through.
Scripts are available giving the reason for the call, such as a neighbor calling about a leaky
pipe; a mother informing that a sister just had a baby; or a boss saying he needs help immedi-
ately.
"It graciously allows you to play along and to get out of that situation," Mishra explained.
The free app can be pre-set before the date to call at a specific time and there is a quick rescue
that can be triggered on the spot to ring in a few seconds or minutes.
"There are all sorts of reasons for why people want to get out of a date. We are helping them
do it in a way that is fun and light and not abrupt," he added.
What in the world will they come up with next?
