She learned it from her Mom and Dad. “My mother, Virginia Bard, made holiday wreaths for our church every year. She volunteered at Sunnyview into her 80s,” Ball said. “My father, Malcolm Bard, was a member of the Niskayuna Town Planning Board when I was in high school, and he was also active in the Hartwick College alumni fund. Consequently, I learned about philanthropy while growing up at home.” Cindy herself is very active as a community volunteer and philanthropist, supporting such causes as the Ellis Hospital Foundation, literacy programs, and the Niskayuna Community Foundation. Her husband, Duane, runs Astro Chemical, an epoxy formulation business founded by her father in 1959. Duane was one of the original Schenectady participants in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program. Consequently, it should come as no surprise that the 5 th - generation Niskayunan and her husband have established a donor advised fund through the Niskayuna Community Foundation. Through establishing the fund, they intend to pass on the legacy of giving to their two daughters, Alysa Arnold and Erica Fuller. Their first grant was a record board for the Niskayuna High School swimming pool. “It’s important for families in our community to give of their time, talents, and finances to contribute to making Niskayuna a better place,” Ball said. “And children learn by example.” Instilling a sense of community support in their daughters was important to Ball. Her eldest daughter, Alysa, as a middle-school student in the late 80s, used to read to a visually-impaired woman at the Glendale Home. She was interviewed and later recognized by WNYT-TV as one of the inaugural “13 Kids Who Care.” As an adult, living in Saratoga, Alysa has been involved in mentoring programs, graduated from “Leadership Saratoga,” and serves on the board of directors for the Universal Preservation Hall. Erica, who holds a masters degree in environmental science, recently married and relocated to Saratoga. Consequently, environmental causes are near and dear to Erica, and, Cindy is certain that Erica will find ways to become active in and support organizations in the Spa City. Ball remains heavily invested in Niskayuna’s success. “I want to see Niskayuna continue to be a good place to grow up, and raise children,” Ball said, noting that her first grandchild, Virginia Arnold, will celebrate her first birthday in March. “I’d like to see people keep supporting community projects that will attract people to the area.” If you’d like more information on how you can establish a lasting gift through the Niskayuna Community Foundation, please contact Cindy Phillippe at (518) 935-7899. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEThe Niskayuna Community Foundation is your foundation. Through it you can show your commitment to and re-spect for the quality of life you and your family find in our community. Through the grants it provides to organiza-tions in Niskayuna, it plants the seeds that provide educational, recreational, cultural and health related programs that benefit residents from early childhood to senior citizens. Through scholarships and awards, it recognizes excellence and service and creates opportunities for success. When the Niskayuna Community Foundation takes these actions, everyone wins. Our belief is in the “power of many”. Many donors making gifts to the Foundation of whatever amount they can is what allows us to continue to support those good programs and new ideas that make Niskayuna a great place to live and raise a family. As you consider the contributions you plan to make this year, please consider the impact you can make on your community through your gift to the Foundation. Make a difference in your community–be part of “the power of many”–support the Niskayuna Community Foundation. Thank you and best wishes to you and all in Niskayuna for 2008.Sincerely,Briggs McAndrews

MOre ABOUT DONOr ADvISeD FUNDSCharitably minded individuals, families and corpora-tions that wish to be actively involved with the distribu-tion of grant or gift money, but not the day to day man-agement of a charitable fund, frequently find the Donor Advised Fund the perfect charitable vehicle.

A Donor Advised Fund allows donors to enjoy an ongo-ing involvement with their charitable gift, benefit from the tax advantages afforded to public charities by the In-ternal Revenue Service Code, and ensure that their gifts become a permanent charitable legacy.

A Donor Advised Fund is a component fund of the Nis-kayuna Community Foundation. As such it allows do-nors to retain involvement in directing gifts from the fund. Yet the fund won’t be subjected to the excise taxes and burdensome reporting requirements that a private foundation would be.

In addition, a donor can take advantage of the 50% of adjusted gross income contribution limits, and may re-ceive current fair market value gift credit for any type of property gift.

With a Donor Advised Fund, you can name successors to carry on your charitable goals. For example, you may name your children, grandchildren, or other trusted ad-visors to carry on your legacy. This will allow you to pass your giving values on to future generations.

ALUMNUS GIveS BACKDan Lazarek, Niskayuna Class of 1983, felt strongly that his high school experience at Niskayuna was a great one! He decided that he wanted to give back to the school he loved and thought other alumni would also. To do this he approached the Niskayuna Community Foundation and offered an extremely generous contribution enabling NCF to purchase an extensive software program that would help reach out to alumni. Through the contacts that would be facilitated by the Raiser’s Edge program, Dan felt confident alumni would welcome the opportunity to give back to their hometown community while keeping in touch with the high school. In addition it will help maintain records for class reunions.

THANKS DAN for your generosity!

Christine Perlee, Chair of the Murray Award for Excellence in Education Committee, announced that the award was presented in 2007 to two Niskayuna High School teachers. Congratulations go to recipients Jason Bach, an American History teacher, and Stephen Honicki, a teacher of Advanced Cinematography and Photography. Students and the NCF committee surprised them in their classrooms.

Students said Mr. Honicki helped to transform the Art Department, helped students find their niche, and influenced students to seek a career in art. He was described as fair and impartial and one who genuinely cares about his students. Mr. Bach was described as passionate and inspiring, and also a mentor. His lectures are exciting and he encourages students to think outside the box.

The Murray Award was established by Edwards B. Murray, and daughters Jeanne Murray Veasey and Kathy Murray Crowe, to recognize the positive impact high school teachers have on students. It recognized the belief of the Murray family that outstanding educators who continue to learn are essential to improving schools and enhancing the education of students. Both recipients received $2500 for use in the professional development activity of their choosing.
