Hello everyone. As the holiday season approaches, I would like to invite all members and their friends to come out to our social networking meeting at Willy Parkers in Williston, Long Island.
The pace of change in both the business world and our personal lives is something I have mentioned before. One of the great things about the holiday season is the fact that we see family and old friends we do not see that often. Please make a special effort to come out and see who is at the SPE meeting in December. Whether you see old friends and renew acquaintances or make new friends I can assure you it will be time well spent.
You know we are always happy to hear from our members. Please tell us what we can do to better serve you as an SPE member and by all means tell me what I am doing wrong! Thank you very much.
I am looking forward to seeing everyone at Willy Parkers in December!

SOCIAL NETWORKING MEETING
The Board of the New York SectionLet’s help each other grow.
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 7 @ 6:00 PMWILLY PARKERSAMERICAN BAR & GRILL
If you have spent any considerable time in our industry, you realize you are living in “very interesting times.” The mood swings of the orders our customers --- whether or not it is for finished goods, raw materials, or equipment --- has made it nearly impossible to project our future business. We are excited when it spikes, we are depressed when it ebbs. We shouldn’t feel, however, that we are in a vacuum. Perhaps it is time to stop thinking that our issues are unique, and go back to some of the behaviors that made our industry grow and prosper in previous decades. One of these behaviors was the networking that is available through the Society. The Section leadership has realized that many of its members have asked for a new look for the Section in terms of meeting struc-ture, and they have developed Networking and other social events to replace what many felt was a tire model.
The Future Relies on WorkforcesBy Peter Mooney
Those of us employed in the U.S. plastics industry should pause to contemplate the likely state of our workforce in both the short- and long-term future. The former may be rather dispiriting; the latter needn’t be.
The U.S. economy in general and U.S. manufacturing industries in particular are slowly, tentatively emerging from the deepest downturn since the 1930s. Ordinarily one would witness a resurgence of hiring in anticipation of vast pent-up demand; recessions ultimately reach a nadir from which recovery ensues. However, today the rates of U.S. unemploy-ment and underemployment remain stubbornly elevated. To some extent this reflects the unusual uncertainty to which the head of the Federal Reserve Bank recently alluded. Also to no small extent this can be attributed to the oppressive anti-business (or at least ignorant-of-business) policy making by the federal government and Congress. Yet our educational system must also shoulder some of the blame.
