Pınar Öğrenci – A Gentle Breeze Passed Over Us
3 March – 7 May 2017, Garage
Press conference: Thursday, 2 March 2017, 10 a.m.
Opening: Thursday, 2 March 2017, 7 p.m.
The exhibition of Istanbul-based artist Pınar Öğrenci highlights the both politically and socially
explosive topics of war, migration and asylum on the example of an Iraqi living in Vienna. A
Gentle Breeze Passed Over Us (2017) is a four-channel video installation shown for the first time
at KUNST HAUS WIEN. As a universal language, music plays an important role in intercultural
exchange. In Pınar Öğrenciʼs work it is both narrative and metaphor for translocality.
The four films tell a story of resistance, they present Ahmed Obaid Shaqaqi, a young Iraqi who
was forced to leave the country of his childhood shadowed by the war, and who tries to build a
new life for himself in Vienna with the help of music. On the occasion of her 40-day visit to
Vienna in 2016, Pınar Öğrenci became acquainted with the young Iraqi musician Ahmed Obaid
Shaqaqi. Shaqaqi, a very talented oud player (short-necked lute from the Middle East), lives in a
refugee home in Vordere Zollamtsstraße. He and his family were persecuted by militant Islamist
groups and were thus forced to abandon their country. During the time Öğrenci spent with
Shaqaqi and his friends, trust and friendship developed between them. Pınar Öğrenci immersed
into Ahmeds world of music and learned the story of his flight. In her video installation A Gentle
Breeze Passed Over Us the artist brings together these significant aspects of Shaqaqis life in an
impressive and empathetic way.
The title of the work A Gentle Breeze Passed Over Us (orginal Arab title: الهوا علينا نسم Nassam
Aleyna Al Hawa) is taken from a song by the famous Lebanese singer Fairuz. The melancholic
song describes the longing for one’s native country; it can be heard in the streets of Istanbul, Pınar
Öğrenci’s home city, sung by musicians from the Middle East.
