Brian Forsyth, Architect _ .

COUNCIL MEETING0 6 FE8 2 0 ‘07

Firm Description:

Brian Forsyth, Architect develops innovative Barrier Free and Universal Access solutions. This career long commitment has included writing, teaching, and consulting on all scales of planning and building projects.

The firm’s approach is to eliminate barriers by design, rather than bridging them with technology. These solutions emphasize independence and full access. They tend to be economical and can be seamlessly incorporated into the building design.

We first used this approach, to make all areas of the McMichael Canadian Collection galleries accessible and safe with a fire separated ramp. We also moved an historic stair forward at the Ontario Legislature to add a gentle sloping public sidewalk behind it. This made the building fully accessible but eliminated the need for a ramp that would have been out of character with the historic building.

We worked with Pamela Cluff on the first City of Toronto, ADAPT access Inventory in 2001, reviewing Access conditions at 15 medium and large City of To ro nto bu i Id i n g s .

Brian Forsyth personally was a founding board member of both the Barrier Free Design Centre, the Premier’s Awards for Accessibility and the York University Access Committee. He is currently on the consulting team for the Centre for Independent Living- Toronto, the Ontario March of Dimes, and the Ontario Human Rights Commission. Mr. Forsyth has also conducts seminars and workshops on Access including training sessions for members of the Ontario Association of Architects.

Recent projects have included:

Building Access assessment for four provincial government buildings: The Coroner’s Building 25 Grosvenor, Toronto; The Ministry of the Environment, 135 St Clair Ave. W., Toronto, ON; The E.C Drury School for the Deaf, Milton, ON; The Peel Regional Courthouse and Registry Office, Brampton, ON

The ADAPT Inventory of approximately 15 City of Toronto Public Buildings including the secure Operations Centre, Old City Hall and various assembly facilities, with for Associated Planning Consultants.
