Certified Associate in Project Management CAPM

My personal experience... Why - I wanted to differentiate myself and

formally acknowledge my PM knowledge on my resume.

How - I attended the PMI NEO PMP Study Group, Professional Development Days and chapter meetings, plus B-W courses.

CAPM vs. PMP - The PMP registration requires detailed records of your project hours, which I had not kept on my volunteer projects.

Results - I easily passed the exam, then I interviewed for jobs that required the CAPM and/or stated “PMP preferred”.

What is a Program?

A program is a set of related projects managed in a coordinated fashion to obtain control and benefits that would not be available if those projects were managed individually1.

I managed several program resulting from mergers & acquisitions - the business benefit the programs had to achieve was synergy realization (i.e. cost savings)

Sample projects within these programs: Technology capability assessment & surviving

technology recommendations Data mapping and functionality gap analysis Gap closures Hardware/software repurposing/retirement Data

extract, transformation/cleansing & load Enterprise testing Conversion planning & execution

24

Program Management Professional Certification Process

Must pass a sequence of three evaluations:

1. Application review – a panel of program managers review your professional project and program management experience over the past 15 years

• 6,000 hrs project management experience

• 10,000 hrs program management experience

2. Multiple Choice Exam – 150 questions/4 hours

3. Multi-Rater Assessment – similar to a 360 review process by a team of 12 raters you select

• 1 supervisor

• 4 peers

• 4 direct reports

• 3 professional references

Application audit may be required Sample projects within this program:

Member fee: $1500

Page 25: Pmineo chapter meeting template, v5 (051810)

25

Certification Process – Personal Experience

Documenting the experience was a challenge – it was difficult to find documentation and contacts on projects/programs I managed 5-15 years ago

I was selected for audit so I had to get thee colleagues to certify the information on my application

I prepared for the exam using the Sybex Program Management Professional Exam Study Guide and the Crosswind PgMP Exam Review: Bootcamp Manual

Could NOT find many online sample tests

The exam was difficult!!!

Page 26: Pmineo chapter meeting template, v5 (051810)

26

Certification Process – Personal Experience 2

My application was rejected the first time through because I didn’t break my projects out enough

My PMP application was available as a PDF file on PMI’s web site so I redid my application using that.

I was selected for audit (I’m not aware of any PgMP who wasn’t)

I prepared for the exam using: IIL’s PgMP course (covered content), and

Terminus, Inc. PgMP exam prep (covered how to take the exam.) The exam prep was very valuable

I didn’t find the exam to be difficult (likely due to the test prep class.)

Page 27: Pmineo chapter meeting template, v5 (051810)

27

Opinion of Certification Value

I was the first, and still am the only PgMP at my company (35,000 employees.) It was publicized.

I feel the PgMP has given me a reputation at work as an expert in Program Management Methodology.

I felt some sense of security when there were layoffs on my team in early 2009.

Page 28: Pmineo chapter meeting template, v5 (051810)

28

Program Management Job MarketPersonal Experience

The program management discipline is still in its infancy and PgMP® certification is not well known

During my job search saw three primary types of “program management” positions

Non-profit or social organizations looking for managers/directors for their social programs

Organizations defining this role for account managers or business managers

Organizations that recognized program management as part of the project management family of disciplines

Page 29: Pmineo chapter meeting template, v5 (051810)

29

Program Management Job MarketPersonal Experience

2009 PgMP® opportunities I was aware of:

0 in the Cleveland market

1 in the Columbus market

2 in the Pittsburgh market

Several national & international (many in the DC area especially government related)

2010 opportunities

24 nationwide job posting on Monster in March that specifically listed PgMP

Page 30: Pmineo chapter meeting template, v5 (051810)

30

Recommendation

PgMP® is a fine certification and I have no regrets in pursuing the certification.

There are currently over 400 PgMP® certified professionals worldwide. This makes it a unique certification (pros and cons to that.)

However, I would recommend obtaining the PMP® before the PgMP® only because it is more widely recognized and therefore more marketable.
