Uganda Chapter BackgroundPMI Uganda Chapter was officially chartered by PMI in May 2014, making it the

seventh Chapter in Africa; and the second in East Africa.

It started as a vehicle for promoting project management professionalism within the

corporate, government, academic and civil society sectors in Uganda.

Uganda Chapter is part of Sub-Saharan Africa with 18 Chapters, under Europe and

Sub-Saharan Africa Region of PMI. PMI is the world’s leading association that serves

more than 3 million professionals around the world in the project economy

Questions from members that need to be addressed by the BOARD Members

1. Is there a possibility of increasing on the period of membership to 2 years at least?

• This is not an option at the moment. Can I pay membership for more than one year?

• Yes. however, you will need to let us once you do for us to liaise with PMI membership team

2. How do I earn a PMI certification?

• To obtain a PMI certification, you must first meet the eligibility requirements outlined on www.pmi.org and detailed in

the certification handbooks. Then, you must pass an exam

3. What are PDUs and How Do I get PDUs?

• PDUs stand for Professional Development Units. PDUs are the measuring unit used to quantify your professional

development as part of the Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program. 1 PDU = 1 hour of learning/teaching

others or volunteering/activity.

• You can earn PDUs through two broad categories1: 1. Education PDUs can be earned at professional seminars,

webinars, classes, or even self-directed learning. 2. Giving Back PDUs are for time spent volunteering, mentoring,

working with professional groups, and more.

4. There are some events that we attend and the PDUs are never given. How do i claim those PDUs?

• Some events the Chapter automatically claims the PDUs on your behalf. Other events however require that you claim the PDUs by

yourself. All Chapter claimed PDUs have been reported, please check and verify or contact me on Gerald.isabirye@pmiuganda.org

5. PMI used to send emails reminders regarding Payments due, upcoming deadlines for renewals etc. I don't see these anymore and I would

like to know why.

• These reminders are still being sent. Try updating your details on your account and allowing the notifications from PMI.

6. My PMP certification expired early this year with just 1.5 PDUs shy of the renewal (😭😭😭). How do I go about renewing my

certification?

• It’s not RENEWAL anymore! Your certification is now in suspension status. Suspension status lasts for one year or until the certification

holder can meet the renewal requirements or earn the PDUs that they lacked. During the suspension period: 1. you cannot hold

yourself out as being a PMP certification holder and 2. You cannot use the PMP designation.

• In order to reinstate use of the aforementioned benefits, the re-certification process must be completed within the imposed one-year

suspension period.

7. And do the PDUs acquired from such webinars still count towards my certification? Only after renewal. If you complete required PDUs

during the suspension period to meet your CCR, you will be able to renew your certification. However, if you can document the necessary

PDUs from the original CCR cycle, you can use PDUs earned during your suspension period as activities toward the cycle in which these

PDUs were actually earned.
