Transport Secretary announces new flights between Cornwall and Heathrow 1. Speaking in the House of Commons recently,

the Secretary of State for Transport announced that people across the South West will benefit from a new direct air route between Newquay and Heathrow Airport from April 2019. This new service builds on the government’s commitment of joining the nations and regions of the UK with Heathrow Airport. The introduction of 4 new daily return flights between Cornwall and Heathrow will ensure passengers now have even greater range of choice for when and where to fly. Regional airports like Cornwall Airport Newquay play an important role, delivering domestic and international connections that help passengers travel further and link businesses to global trade partners. The public service obligation which allows this route to run is jointly funded by a government and Cornwall Council initiative and will give passengers a choice of more than 200 destinations across 85 countries. The new flights will replace existing services that operate between Cornwall Airport Newquay and Gatwick Airport. Airlines flying to any UK destination from Heathrow will continue to benefit from £15 discount on airport charges, making it cheaper to fly within the UK than ever before. This is just one element in a package of measures Heathrow is implementing to support more domestic flights within the UK. Th press release stated that the new route is a clear example of the government’s own ambitions as it works to ensure all regions of the UK are well served by airports and routes to the rest of the country. According to Google maps, it takes just over an hour to drive from Plymouth to Newquay Airport. More - here

400 Women project 2. Women in STEM Plymouth (WISP, www.winstemplymouth.org), who have been supported by the

PMG since their inception, have launched an exciting and ambitious new project. 400 Women is a collaboration between WISP, Mayflower 400 and the NMA, which aims to celebrate the life and work of 400 women working in science, technology, engineering and maths in and around Plymouth, and in doing so, to inspire the next generation to follow in their footsteps. It is centred around online profiles (see www.400.winstemplymouth.org) of 400 women who work in science, technology, engineering and maths related roles in or around Plymouth or who have a strong connection to the city. The project is already proving to be incredibly popular and has so far smashed its target of 5 women/month, having had over 70 sign up in only the first 4 weeks! As the project is open to any woman in STEM who has a connection to Plymouth, regardless of career stage, it is a fantastic opportunity to promote women in your organisation – especially those who are early in their careers and might not otherwise get as much recognition. So if you know a woman in STEM, who you think could and should be an inspiration to others, please send them to www.400.winstemplymouth.org/take-your-place so they can join. The website is also

a great resource for any young people who want to learn about the wide variety of STEM roles available in Britain’s Ocean City and the surrounding area, so please check it out! WISP are also planning a VIP launch for the project, on the evening of the 13th February 2018 in partnership with the National Marine Aquarium. The NMA are kindly donating their fantastic space for us, but they are looking for another local partner to sponsor the event. Sponsoring the VIP Launch is a fantastic opportunity to reach out to a diverse audience within the local area and send a clear positive message about the values of your business. If you are interested in sponsoring or would like more information about the project, please get in touch with Dr Lorna Dallas, Chair of WISP, on [email protected].

Innovative technology centre opening at Oceansgate development 3. A new centre for marine innovation, based at Plymouth’s Oceansgate

development, is now up-and-running thanks to European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) funding. The ERDF has granted £2.6 million to fund the Marine Business Technology Centre (MBTC) in Plymouth, which has been developed as a partnership by some of the world’s leading key marine research establishments. The partnership, led by Plymouth City Council, includes the University of Plymouth, the University of Exeter, Plymouth Marine Laboratory and the Marine Biological Association. The ERDF funding has been matched by contributions from all the partners, bringing the total investment to £4.5 million, which will enable the MBTC to run for the next three years. The MBTC will offer specialist innovation support to marine businesses across the region, helping to develop new technology and promote local businesses both nationally and internationally. Building on the on- and sub-sea validation range on the Western Channel Observatory (WCO) off Plymouth Sound, the centre will provide industry with access to cutting edge assets and expertise from across the partnership. A new state-of-the-art buoyed platform six miles offshore and highly sophisticated autonomous vessel and towed vehicles will also be operating in Plymouth waters. This will allow companies and research establishments the opportunity to test prototypes for new maritime technologies including autonomous devices, alternative propulsion, sensors, instruments, and environmental monitoring devices in open water. This exciting partnership marks another step forward for industry and research organisations in Plymouth to establish the UK Marine Autonomy Range (UK MAR), a validation area aiming to be the first officially endorsed and charted range in the UK. PMG co-sponsors Women in STEM careers event at Dartmoor Zoo 4. I must admit when Lorna Dallas, Chair of Women in STEM Plymouth (WISP), first floated the idea last

year that she wanted to hold a careers event for young people, primarily girls, on a dark night in November, in what I thought was the middle of nowhere i.e. Cornwood, I have to say that I was more than a little sceptical. But I’m pleased to say how wrong I’ve been proven to be, not just once, but now twice! As this year’s event, which was once again sponsored by the PMG, was even more popular with over thirty exhibitors and hundreds of students attending. The statistics speak for themselves: >90% attendees rating the event either good, very good or excellent >80% thought that there were a good range of exhibitors on offer >70% thought it was well organised >70% said that it made them more aware of STEM careers 90% said it was fun! And >90% of the exhibitors said that they would return to similar events in the future. Congratulations to Lorna and to Abi, in particular, and to the whole of the WISP team! Here of some photos taken on the night.

DIT supports Becton Dickinson (BD) producing 2.6 billion products a year 6. Renowned for their high quality medical

technology, Becton Dickinson (BD) have operations in the likes of the US, Japan and the Middle East, employing 65,000 people across the world. In the UK and Ireland, they have eight sites which employ 2,800 associates in a variety of research, manufacturing and retail roles. DIT have helped BD, whose Plymouth operation is predominantly manufacturing based, with export and investment advice and support from our network of International Trade Advisors, who are based across the UK. With 2.6 billion products being produced at the south-west facility every year, the company specialise in the production of blood collection tubes which sell to hospitals and medical facilities in all corners of the globe. Speaking on the visit, Baroness Fairhead said, “Becton Dickinson are a great example of a global business whose export and manufacturing operation is helping to drive growth in their local community through initiatives such as their apprenticeship scheme. The Department for International Trade stands ready to support any business in south west England, and across the country, who has the ambition to export. This support includes our network of Trade Advisors who are on hand to offer guidance, our award-winning export credit agency, UK Export Finance, and a variety of export opportunities through GREAT.gov.uk”. The visit comes after BD announced a further investment of more than £170m last year, which will see additional manufacturing lines added to their Plymouth site. With a need to recruit more engineers in the South West of England, BD are running an apprenticeship scheme which has 40 apprentices working at the site at any one time, including 12 who specifically look at engineering and spend four years working at the site. This is all part of a strategy which the company has set out, with government support, to engage with young people in the Plymouth area. Full article - here

Fairford Electronics launches ‘game-changing’ agility™ soft starter range at SPS IPC Drives 9. Global number one in the low voltage soft starter market, Fairford

Electronics, part of the Motortronics Group, launched its new agility™ range at November’s SPS IPC Drives 2018. Fairford’s agility™ soft starter range has been developed to exceed industry demands and now has three standard frame sizes to cover all typical applications from 7.5kW to 250kW at 500VAC, 15 - 350HP at 600VAC. agility™ is introduced by Fairford as a game-changing soft starter with features that include a smart application pre-program suite and 3S technology to deliver stable acceleration and deceleration in all operating conditions. Also showcased on the stand was the synergy™ high performance energy saving soft starter. The incorporation of Fairford’s unique iERS technology allows synergy™ to deliver unrivalled soft start performance alongside enhanced energy saving capability on partially loaded motors. This product launch follows on from the announcement earlier this year that Fairford is now part of the Motortronics Group, a world leader in solid-state AC motor controls and motor protection. With a product range perfectly complementing Fairford’s range of low voltage soft starters, this acquisition means that the Motortronics Group is now the largest soft starter manufacturer in the World. Motortronics featured their MVC4 medium voltage soft starter on the stand at SPS. Designed for applications up to 15kV, the MVC4 includes selectable ramping profiles to suit specific applications; 500% duty for 60 seconds and 600% for 30 seconds; plus, an optional touchscreen interface. This was a first-time attendance for Fairford Electronics as an exhibitor at SPS IPC Drives. Organisers of the exhibition say it was the largest event to date, with an additional hall being used, taking the total floor space to 135,000m2, with 20 UK companies exhibiting and 1,700 international businesses. Mark Shepherd, Fairford managing director commented: “We’re delighted to be exhibiting at SPS IPC Drives for the first time. Our presence underlines our commitment to global growth that is facilitated by being part of the Motortronics Group.”

MicroLED Display Technology for AR Lands CES 2019 Honour for Plessey 10. Plessey, a leading developer of award-winning

optoelectronic technology, today announces that it has been named a CES 2019 Innovation Awards Honoree in the Embedded Technologies category. The company has been recognised for its monolithic microLED displays – which, compared with incumbent technologies, deliver seven times greater light output, five times better contrast and improved resolution in AR applications. The CES innovation awards, sponsored by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), owner and producer of CES, are annual awards that recognise honourees across 28 product categories. Judged by a distinguished panel of designers, engineers and members of the tech media, these prestigious innovation awards credit products and technologies based on excellence in design, functionality, consumer appeal, engineering and how the products compare with others in the market. Mike Lee, President of Corporate and Business Development at Plessey, said: “As the only provider of GaN-on-Silicon monolithic microLEDs, Plessey is about to disrupt the displays market with a technology that delivers a tangibly better consumer experience. At the same time, our products enable much smaller and less power-hungry devices to be produced. This is going to be as big a change as when LCDs replaced cathode ray tubes (CRTs) in Personal Computer displays.” Plessey’s monolithic microLEDs will result in a new generation of augmented reality (AR) and display devices. The company’s technology will enable OEMs to manufacture products that are not only compact enough to be worn without restricting the overall experience for users of AR and virtual reality (VR) applications and in head-up displays (HUDs), but also provide the necessary size, weight, power and luminance. PMG to form a new Information Communications Technology (ICT) subgroup 11. Early in the New Year, the PMG will be launching its new ICT subgroup,

under the Chairmanship of Myles Blake, Business Information Director at Plessey. Representatives nominated to join the group are growing in number, but there is still room for more. Myles has suggested that some of the early topics for consideration should include: security; cloud computing; collaboration and productivity; mobility; IPv6; privacy and data protection; artificial Intelligence; software define networking and data centres and the so-called Internet of Things. If you would like to join this emerging PMG ICT subgroup, please send me your name; job title and email address ASAP. Please note, you needn’t be an IT specialist to join the group. This will be particularly true of SME’s (and other firms without a dedicated IT team) [email protected]

Dancing Robots are a reality at Rittal’s Manufacturing Plant in Germany 13. High-tech production plants that “think

for themselves”, that plan things automatically and that optimise maintenance work through artificial intelligence, might sound like a futuristic sci-fi film, but it is fast becoming a reality at Rittal’s manufacturing plant in Rittershausen, Germany. To produce its new VX25 large enclosure system, Rittal is transforming its production plant “on the fly” into a highly-advanced enclosures factory, populated by welding and handling robots. Half the conversion work has already been completed and the Industry 4.0 manufacturing unit is expected to be finished by 2020. The total investment involved has reached €120 million. “Along with all our innovations and new product launches, we are modernising our production facilities as well,” says Carsten Röttchen, Managing Director International Production at Rittal. These facilities are now being installed, step-by-step, in a conversion and transformation process which is now becoming apparent. Two large enclosure systems are currently being manufactured on the premises; while thousands of TS 8 enclosures are still running-off the production lines on the one side, the new VX25 large enclosure systems are being made on the other. What is happening in Rittershausen is the start of a fully networked factory– something also known as “Industry 4.0” (IoT) production. It is a project that has got a lot to offer. Much of this automation is based on intelligent and networked systems that think ahead, plan automatically and trigger maintenance scenarios,” explains Norbert Peter, Plant Director at Rittershausen. “Our vision is that if a customer in Italy orders ten VX25s, our production management system here in Rittershausen will be informed automatically and it will trigger production,” Mr. Röttchen explains. International Trade Matters guiding you to AEO status 16. International Trade Matters has highly experienced

consultants who have guided multi-national companies to full Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) status and through subsequent re-assessments of the conformity with the latest AEO criteria. As an independent assessor we can visit your company and work in partnership to review your current export/import/security arrangements to align the company with the requirements laid down in the AEO process by: • Updating current procedures to meet the AEO base line • Working in strictest confidence and provide a fully completed AEO application to be presented to

HMRC • Representing the company on HMRC site visits and provide follow-up information on your behalf As the UK moves towards the divorce from the European Free Market place it is important that UK companies realise that for trade to work there will be a requirement for a great deal of self-regulation. This is where AEO accreditation comes into the frame. Companies who achieve AEO status will be well set to take advantage of any trade agreements in the future. Becoming an AEO accredited company will also mean that the company will no longer require bank guarantees to cover their import liability. More - here

• Government encourages businesses to claim £2,500 voucher for broadband boost - Businesses around the UK are being urged to make use of a £2,500 voucher for gigabit broadband speeds before the scheme closes due to high demand. The government believes full fibre networks are the future and that getting ready for a gigabit speed is a key step for most businesses. Optical fibre-based networks are faster, more reliable, easier to upgrade and set the standard for connectivity. Demand for greater digital connectivity in terms of speed and reliability is expected to grow exponentially in future years. The Nationwide Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS) is part of a government plan to get more businesses connected to full fibre broadband. It will provide vouchers for small or medium-sized firms to help with the costs of connecting to the service. More - here

Collaborative training for your team aimed at improving efficiency, reducing waste and generally empowering your teams to make a difference 24. This Level 2 Certificate in Business Improvement Techniques Lean training course is delivered by

training provider Lean Education and Development (LEAD) and enables small and large companies to exploit their Apprenticeship Levy fun or obtain lean training for a fraction of the normal costs. The yearlong program mixes personnel and allows peer to peer learning across different organisations. The idea to collaborate on training came from Aldermans’ managing director Karen Friendship. “Working together on this training course has been particularly special. Our staff have not just learnt about continuous improvement, problem-solving and workplace organisation, but they’ve benefitted from the knowledge and experiences of their colleagues in the other companies and they’ve forged lasting friendships. The shopfloor implementation project is also key in applying their learning through real life shopfloor challenges”. For more information read here & here & here & here or contact Lead direct.

Plymouth Raiders Special PMG Offer 27. Please find attached

here the criteria for the game sponsorship. The game I’m able to discount is 16th December vs London City Royals... London City Royal are new to the league this year, they've been incredibly vocal about their arrival and have started well, they have few ex-members of Raiders on the team so the fans will turn out just to see them return. So that being said, instead of it costing £1,500 plus vat I’m offering the game at £900 plus vat. Fantastic opportunity to get together staff members or clients for pre-Christmas drinks. Again, many thanks for sharing. Heather Nash, General Manager. T: 01752 778342 M: 07790634986 www.plymouthraiders.com

Help Save Music In Plymouth Schools 28. Plymouth Music Accord is a charity that supports music

around Plymouth, especially helping young people. Committee member - Jack Bedbrook – ex-MD of the Dockyard and ex-member of PMG, suggested your members might be interested in lending support. We support school students by: - o funding tickets for schoolchildren to experience live

concerts o funding group tuition for pupils at secondary schools, otherwise unaffordable from family budgets o enabling young musicians rehearse and perform with an orchestra or choir o funding aspirant young musicians first professional performance or buying instruments. National policy discourages the study of music in secondary schools and instrument tuition is not free. There is concern on the long-term availability of music GCSE and A Level in Plymouth schools. Each tutor project costs £900 pa and currently we run 7 projects in 5 schools. These have produced lifechanging effects in participants – enhancing personal and intellectual development studying music and giving performances. Several have gone on to study music at

VII Consultations, Reviews, Surveys & Calls for Evidence

The Marine Business Technology Centre Survey 30. The Marine Business Technology Centre (MBTC) will be

a dedicated team delivering a new service to marine businesses, and their supply chains, to enable them to test and develop new technologies in the waters off Devon principally, and in and around Plymouth Sound. The MBTC is anchored in, and has access to, the Oceansgate Marine Enterprise Zone – the first in the UK – and includes access to enhanced marine test facilities and innovation support across Devon, Plymouth and Torbay. It is a collaboration between Plymouth City Council (PCC), and its ‘knowledge partners’: University of Plymouth (UP), University of Exeter (UE), Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) and the Marine Biological Association (MBA). The purpose of this survey is to engage industry directly with the view that any innovation service or support mechanism is fit for purpose and relevant to the needs of business now and in the future. It is imperative that the Marine sector is an active partner in this programme in order for it to be a success. We therefore welcome your input in developing the innovation offer for the Marine sector in the UK. If you would like more information about the MBTC please email [email protected] or call 07760271707. MBTC is seeking advice from marine and maritime businesses to find out what the sector wants from them, and so would be grateful if you could spare 5 minutes to fill out this very short survey. To find out more and to take part click - here NB: PMG members will be offered a site visit to Oceansgate Marine Enterprise Zone in the very near future.

Broadband User Survey - Connecting Devon and Somerset 31. Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) is committed to

improving broadband infrastructure across our two counties, and in particular the rural areas, to enable more people to access the benefits of digital technology. The survey takes around 5 minutes to complete and looks at your current broadband service, what works and what improvements maybe made. In the survey you will be asked your current download and upload speeds. If you are unsure what speeds you currently get you can check this using the following online speed checker tool. Your feedback, be you a resident, a business or both, is really important to us. It will help us to understand how well we and our contractors have been doing, and what impact the programme is having. It will also contribute to our future plans and emerging Digital Strategy. This will include the use of internet for health care services. Your information will be treated in strictest confidence and stored, shared and processed in accordance with our data protection and privacy notice found here. Start the survey - here – Survey ends 9th December.
