World’s megaproject: California High-speed Rail We continue our journey to discover gigantic infrastructure projects around the world, this month we look at California High-speed Rail, the most expensive and ambitious project in America today. By 2029, the high-speed rail phase 1 will connect San Francisco to Los Angeles in less than three hours at a speed up to 220 miles per hour. In phase 2, the system will run to Sacramento and San Diego. On its completion, it will comprise of 800 miles of track with up to 24 stations. With a construction and planning budget of $68.4 billion for Phase 1 only, the project is the most expensive public project in United States history and as with any big infrastructure project, it is highly controversial.
