Safety Precautions

Caution: The text marked with the symbol above presents direct or indirect risks to personal safety.Read this Manual carefully and always maintain it close at hand to eliminate any doubts.Don't try to operate the equipment without prior knowledge of all its controls and fullunderstanding of its functioning. Use always the following safety precautions before proceedingwith any work, because they are listed for your protection:

Do not change the original features of the engine;

� Do not smoke when refueling the fuel tank;

� Clean immediately any and all spilled fuel. Place all used material in a clean and safe area;

� Do not refuel an operating engine, unless it is absolutely necessary;

� Never clean, lubricate or adjust an engine while it is running;

� Do not make any adjustment, if you do not know how to do it correctly;

� Do not operate the engine within closed areas, because the exhaust gases are extremely poisonous;

� Do not allow people or animals near the engine, vehicle or equipment while it is running;

� Do not allow people with baggy clothing or with long, loosen hair to approach the movable parts;

� Maintain a safe distance from any rotary parts. Remember that fans, for example, cannot be seen distinctly while the engine is running;

� Do not remove the radiator cap if the engine is hot, because a spray of engine coolant, under pressure, is extremely dangerous and couldcause a serious burnings;

� Do not use salty water or any other liquid that could cause corrosion in the cooling system;

� Avoid sparks and flames near the batteries, especially when they are being charged, because they can cause explosions. The batteryelectrolyte can boil and any contact with your skin and/or eyes is dangerous;

� Disconnect the battery terminals before doing any repair to the electrical system;

� Seek medical assistance immediately if the high-pressure diesel fuel penetrates into the skin.

Operation and Maintenance Recommendations

Start and stop

Normal Start

Caution: Put the transmission shift in neutral (Agricultural).

1. Perform the "Daily Maintenance" routine.

Note: If the engine was inactive for a long period, bleed thefuel system.

2. Actuate the throttle to approximately ¼ of its total stroke.

3. Turn the start key to position 4 during 7 (seven) seconds at most.

Caution: Do not keep the key turned on too long, because itwill damage the starter motor.In turbocharged engines, after the start, wait for 30(thirty) seconds in idling to avoid damage to theturbocharger.

Cold Start (for Engines with Start System Heating Kit)

Caution: Put the transmission shift in neutral (Agricultural).

1. Perform the �Daily Maintenance� routine.

2. If the engine has a manual stopping control, make sure it is deactivated (start position).

3. Turn the start key to position 3 and keep it in this condition for 15 seconds.

4. Operate the throttle to position of maximum speed.

5. Turn the key to position 4 and start the engine.

6. If the engine doesn't run, turn the start key back to position 3 and keep it in this condition for 10 seconds. Then, try

to start the engine again.

Caution: Do not operate the key for a long time, this will damage the starter motor.

Stop

1. Keep the engine idling and the transmission shift in neutral.

2. Turn the start key to position 1.

Note: If the engine has manual stopping control, operate it and make sure it is deactivated.

Running-in Period

During the running-in period, follow these recommendations:

� It is not advisable to operate the engine at light loads for a long time.

� Maximum load: It can be applied to a new engine as soon as it is in operation, since the engine's temperature is in the

ideal operation range.

� Do not operate the engine at high speed without load.

� Do not overload the engine.

� Do not operate the engine with sudden accelerations, during the engine's lifetime.

� Before starting the engine, check its lubricating oil, engine coolant and fuel levels.

� Do not keep the engine idling for warming it. Instead, vary the engine speed.

� Do not keep the engine idling without need.

� Keep the operating temperature between 82 and 98 °C.

Note: The operator is responsible for the correct usage of this product during running-in period. To ignore therecommendations above mentioned will cause a decrease of the product life duration, with consequentincrease of lubricating oil consumption to higher levels than those ones defined by project.

Revision Programs

The engine warranty is conditioned to the accomplishment of the first revision (50 hours), and more revisions mentionedin the Warranty Certificate.

All the operations of the obligatory and periodic revisions must be performed by our dealers and / or Authorized ServiceNetwork according to the instructions in this Manual.

The installation of optional, unoriginal aftermarket parts will cancel warranty and may cause serious damages to the engine,with consequent decreasing of its life duration. This procedure only will be allowed if genuine parts with normal versions offactory are used.

For a better performance of your engine, always use genuine spare parts and equipments according to the factoryversions.

Important Notes:

� The lubricating oil and lubricating oil filter must be obligatorily replaced, at most, at each 200 hours or 6 months(whichever happens first).

- For MS 4.1 TA model, the lubricating oil and lubricating oil filter must be obligatorily replaced, at each 150 hours asmaximum.

� The fuel filter must be replaced and the fuel tank cleaned, at most, at each 6 months, even without reaching the limitof 200 hours (recommended for the element replacement).

� The fuel pre-filter element must be replaced each 1000 hours.

Note: Swinging occurs at the moment that exhaust valve is closing and intake valve is opening. In thissituation, the respective cylinder piston will be at top-dead-center.The piston nr 1 is the closest one to the distribution housing.

Cooling System

Preventive Maintenance

While the engine is running at a high temperature room, frequently check the temperature indicator.

Level Check (Daily)

1. Remove radiator cap.

2. If necessary, complete the level with potable water up to the lower part of the filling neck.

Caution: Never check the engine coolant level immediately after stopping the engine. This could cause aserious burning.

3. If level is frequently low, operate the engine and check it for eventual leakages.

4. If it is necessary to fill up the radiator while engine is still hot, keep it at a middle acceleration regime.

Caution: Do not drain the engine coolant from a hot engine with its coolant system pressurized.

4. With the engine turned off, refill the cooling system by the coolant

expansion tank nozzle until the fluid starts to leak through the draining

hole on top of thermostatic valves cover.

Cooling System Filling

(MS 4.1 TA Radiator Capacity: 17 liters)

1. Check the cooling system level capacity (engine/radiator/expansion tank,

if applicable) on Instruction and/or User's Manual supplied by the final

product manufacturer.

Caution: Never check the engine coolant level immediately afterstopping the engine. This could cause a serious burning.

2. Remove radiator cap.

3. Remove coolant bleeding plug, located at cylinder head front end.

Caution: Only fill the expansion tank with coolant with theengine cold. The coolant should contain: 60% cleanwater, 40% anti-freeze additive.

At low temperature areas, composition of coolantshould be: 50% clean water, 50% antifreeze additive.

Carefully read the instructions on the product packingbefore using it.

Coolant Circuit Drainage

Caution: Do not drain the engine coolant from a hot engine with its coolant system pressurized.

1. Remove the cap, the radiator hoses and the engine block drainage plug.

Make sure that the drainage hole is not clogged.

2. Check the hoses condition and replace them in case of damage or

deformation.

Engine Coolant Refilling

After draining the cooling circuit, follow the instructions from section "Refilling"for refilling the system with engine coolant.

Coolant nozzle cap

The cap controls the cooling system's internal pressure by means of its reliefand depressor valve. If it is necessary to remove the cap while the engine ishot, turn it until its first step for internal pressure relieving before its removal.In case it is defective, never try to fix it, but replace it for a new one instead.

Caution: Never operate an engine with the coolant capremoved. Never improvise another type of cap.

Fuel System

Preventive Maintenance

Fuel is an important factor to assure the good engine operation without failures for a long time. Fuel must be clean, exemptof water and impurities.

If the fuel to be used in your engine was stored, see FUEL STORAGE.

During the engine operation, watch the fuel indicator.

Fill the fuel tank before it reaches its minimum fuel level to avoid suctioning the dirt deposited on its bottom and damagingthe filter.

Refueling

1. Clean filling nozzle cap whenever is necessary.

2. At end of each operation day, fill the fuel tank up to avoid air humidity condensation inside it.

Caution: After refueling, keep the fuel tank cap well closed. Never improvise. If the cap has any problem,replace it for an original part.

Bleed air from the system whenever the engine stops due to a lack of fuel.

Do not smoke nor approach any type of exposed flame or sparks during refueling, because dieselfuel is highly inflammable.

3. In periods of intense cold weather (0°C or less), add 20% of aviation

kerosene to diesel fuel. This procedure will prevent a fuel piping obstruction

by paraffin contained in diesel fuel.

During refueling, put kerosene first into the tank and then add the fuel.

Note: Use only aviation kerosene at places where temperatureis below zero degree centigrade (0°C).

Fuel Filter and Pre-Filter

The filters retain the fuel impurities, in a manner that the system receives aclean fuel, this way avoiding damages to engine fuel injection pump andinjection nozzles.

Note: Use only genuine filter elements and replace them withinthe recommended periods

Filter and Pre-Filter Drainage

Daily, to avoid a premature filter obstruction and to assure the fuel injectionpump and injection nozzles durability, it is necessary to drain the filter beforethe first start.

1. Loosen drainage plug on filter and pre-filter head.

2. Manually operate the bleeding pump to drain water, sediment and

impurities from filter.

3. Retighten drain plug as soon as clean fuel flows.

Filters replacement

Before disassembling it, clean the external surfaces of filter and pre-filter.

1. Drain the filter and pre-filter.

2. Loosen the filter central bolt.

3. Remove the bolt, the filter element with the lower base and the gasket.

4. Clean the lower base internally with diesel fuel.

5. Assemble the system with a new gasket, a new filter element and the

lower base. Tighten the central bolt with a torque of 12 Nm (1,2 kgf.m)

(8.3 lb.ft).

6. Bleed the filter's outlet pipe for the injection pump.

7. Run the engine and check it for leakage.

Note: Replace the filter elements according to therecommended periods and use only genuine filterelements.

Supply pump

The supply pump actuates for transferring the fuel from the tank for theinjection pump, passing it through the filters.

Filter screen cleaning

1. Clean the supply pump externally using a brush and a solvent.

2. Clean the plug, sealing gasket and filter screen.

3. Wash the filter screen with kerosene or alcohol, and dry it with

compressed air.

4. Remove any debris from internal side of supply pump.

5. Assemble the filter screen with its flange facing downward.

6. Install a new O-ring and tighten the plug with a torque of 7-11 Nm

(0,7 - 1,1 kgf.m) (5 - 8 lbf.ft).

Air Bleeding

After each following operation described, operate the bleeding pump manuallyuntil fuel leaves without air bubbles. Next, close the indicated bleeding point.

Level

Check the oil level with the engine leveled and stopped.

1. Wait for 10 to 15 minutes so that the oil returns from the upper part of

the engine.

2. Remove dipstick and clean it with a clean cloth, insert it until its limit,

remove it again and check the level. Complete the oil level only if the oil

mark is below the lower mark. Use always an oil of the same specification.

Caution: If the oil level is getting low frequently, seek for aDistributor and / or Authorized Service.

Preventive maintenance

Lubrication system is responsible for the engine durability and its interior cleanliness. Besides lubrication, the oil actuatesabsorbing the heat generated due to friction at the mobile parts.

Lubricating Oil and Filter Change

If the engine operates in places with a great dust concentration or other harmful condition for its good operation, it will benecessary to reduce the change interval of both filter and lubricating oil.

Caution: After the first revision (2500 km) or 50 h, the lubricating oil, together with the filter, mustobligatorily be replaced at most each 7.500 km (200 hours) or 6 months, prevailing what occursfirst

During the drainage, lubricating oil will be hot and could cause burns.

1. Clean the filling inlet cap, and oil sump plug. Remove them and keep the

oil to drain freely.

2. Check the breath pipe for clogging. If necessary, remove and clean it.

3. Remove lubricating oil filter.

4. During oil filter installation, lubricate the rubber gasket.

5. Manually install the oil filter.

6. Install the oil sump plug.

7. Refill the engine with oil and install the filling nozzle cap.

Caution: Use only recommended API 15W40 CF4 or multigradelubricating oils.

8. Put the engine in operation.

9. Stop the engine, check the oil level and the existence of leakages.

Belt

If the engine stops due to overheating, or if the battery is frequentlydischarged, check the belt for loosening or breakage.

Belt Tension Check

The tension is correct if the belt is displaced by approximately 10 mm whenyour thumb presses it at a middle point between water pump and alternatorpulleys.

Otherwise, adjust it by loosening the adjustment arm and distribution housingcover bolts.

Conservation of inactive engines

In order to avoid corrosion in an engine that will be inactive for a long period, it is necessary to take the following measures:

1. Correctly clean the outer parts of the engine.

2. Run engine up to the normal operating temperature. Next, stop it and drain the oil from oil sump.

3. Remove the oil sump, clean the oil suction pipe and replace the lubricant oil filter cartridge.

4. Clean breath pipe.

5. After reinstalling the filter, fill the oil sump up to the maximum level, marked on lubricant oil dipstick with SHELL ENSIS

ENGINE MOTOR oil.

6. Drain the fuel tank and fill it with SHELL CALIBRATION FLUID B oil.

7. Run engine until it reaches its normal operating temperature.

8. Drain engine coolant from engine and radiator.

9. Remove air filter or any extension of the intake piping and protect the air intake opening with adhesive tape.

10. Remove exhaust pipe and protect exhaust and intake manifolds openings.

11. Disconnect the battery and remove it for storage.

Caution: Handle battery carefully, it contains acid. Protect your eyes and hands.

12. Remove fan belt.

13. Complete battery electrolyte level with distillated water. Clean battery terminals, lubricate them with grease and

charge the battery. Do not use quick charging. Store it in a fresh, dry and dust free place. Complete its charge once

a month.

14. Clean starter motor and alternator terminals and apply a thin layer of grease. If the vehicle is exposed to the weather,

protect the alternator, starter motor, and instruments panel.

15. Clean starter motor and alternator terminals and apply a thin coat of grease on them. If the vehicle is to be stored

outside, then alternator, starter motor and instruments panel must be protected from bad weather

Engine preparation to return to operation

Before starting an engine which has been inactive for a long time, take the following cautions:

. Perfectly clean all the outer parts.

2. Close all engine block and radiator drain plugs and fill cooling system with clean water. Check it for leakages.

3. Turn the fan by hand to assure the water pump seals are free.

4. Install fan belt and adjust its tension.

5. Remove valves cover, lubricate rocker arms with engine oil and install it again.

6. Clean and install air filter and intake duct, remove the adhesive tape from intake and exhaust manifolds.

7. Install exhaust pipe.

8. Pressurize the engine oil galleries with oil (50/60 lbf/in.²) and turn crankshaft by hand in order to detach it from

bearing shells. Depressurize the system and remove pressurization tank.

9. Connect the battery(ies):

Caution: Do not invert cables position in relation to battery poles during terminals connection.First connect positive terminal.

10. Remove the excess of grease from alternator and starter motor terminals. Check if all connections are OK.

11. Drain oil from oil sump and fill it up to correct level with the recommended oil.

12. Remove adhesive tape from fuel tank nozzle or fuel tank pipe breath.

13. Drain fuel from fuel tank and fill it with a new one.

14. Replace fuel filter element.

15. Bleed air from fuel system.

Note: By following these instructions, theengine will not be damaged byreturning to work.

Fuel storage

Clean fuel, free of water, impurities and foreign materials are important factors to assure a good engine operation, for a longtime and without failures.

Water, dirt and sulfur contained in fuel are responsible for dregs formation in oil sump, deposits in compression ringsgrooves, cylinders walls, injection nozzles and exhaust valves, besides impairing the good operation of fuel injection pump.The usage of recommended lubricants contributes efficiently to neutralize, to avoid or to reduce the harmful effects ofthese products during engine operation.

The function of the engine fuel filtering system is to avoid that dirt and impurities from fuel could damage fuel injectionsystem high precision parts.

Careless refueling overloads the engine fuel filtering system, compromising its main purpose.

Influence of altitude in engine performance

When naturally aspirated engines are used at high altitude locations, the atmospheric air rarefaction will affect theirperformance. The quantity of air decreases, while fuel delivery remains the same, making the air-fuel mixture richer andlowering its power due to the incomplete combustion.

In this case, it is necessary to decrease the amount of fuel delivered to combustion chamber.

Note: Any adjustment or fuel injection pump setting must be done at the pump manufacturer Distributor..
