PHEV Utility Trucks

• Delivered late 2011/early 2012• 4 bucket trucks w/ cranes• Used by Highway Maintenance• Driven > 24K miles in CY12• Maintained by Fleet Mgmt


Our Trucks

• Made by Deuco and Odyne• Purchased 2 x 40-ft, 2 x 60-ft• Chassis by Kenworth• 35kWh Li-Ion battery system• Redundant power for hydraulics• Retro-fit capable


Battery Charging

• Two 208-volt chargers • Charge overnight as needed• Electricity use metered• Costs ~$2.25 per 95% charge


Costs & Funding

• $1.2 M total; $400K thru WCTP• Previous trucks due for replacement• County bought trucks• WCC supported hybridization:

– Batteries– Hybrid motors– Charging station


Benefits

• Improved fuel efficiency:– Nearly 50% higher mpg– Avoided $34K/yr in fuel costs

• Reduced idling and noise:– Engine not needed for hydraulics– Cabs heated/cooled with batteries

• Hedge against fuel cost increases• Positive buzz and PR for County


Lessons Learned

• Special reqs may delay delivery• Build charger costs into estimates• Techs need training on O&M• Added weight -> slower acceleration
