Let’s Review

To compare and

means to tell ways in which things are alike and different.

Summarizing a story means telling the story in

a short way. Make sure to tell the important parts.

It may help to think about who the story

is about.

It may help to think about where the

story takes place.

It may help to think about the beginning,

middle and end.

The theme of a story is a big idea you can learn

from reading and thinking about the story.

What does the author want you to know?

Do the characters learn a lesson?

What might happen in your life that can help you

understand the big idea?

A story’s plot is what happens in the beginning, middle and end of the story.

In many stories the events of the story tell how a character’s problem is solved.

Jan and her family must move away.

Jan packs her things and looks out the window as they travel to their new home.

Jan finds that her new home has new and familiar things. The best things are still the same.

Jan’s problem in the

beginning was she was not sure about moving to a new house.

By the end, Jan had moved to a new place.

She understood about how

things stay the same and change.

Ruby’s egg was the last to hatch.

Ruby did everything in her own time. She grew up and flew off.

Ruby came back with her own family.

The problem in this story is Ruby was always the

last duckling to do things. She flew off and her dad didn’t know if

she would come back.

In the end, Ruby came back. She

had her own family! It is okay that

Ruby does things in her

own time.

Toad planted his seeds and wanted them to grow.

Toad shouted, read, sang, and played music trying to get the seeds to grow.

When Toad fell asleep, the seeds came up on their own.

Toad’s problem in the story is he wants his

seeds to grow.

In the end, Toad’s seeds

grow all on their own.
