Otoshidamaおとしだま• In Japan, children don’t receive presents for

Christmas as it is not really celebrated there.• Instead they receive Otoshidama, or a New Year

Money Gift, on New Years’ Day.• The New Years Holiday in Japan is called - • O Shougatsu• おしょうがつ• This holiday lasts four days in Japan and has the same

significance to the Japanese as Christmas has for us.

Otoshidama Bukuroおとしだまぶくろ• Otoshidama bukuro literally means New Year Gift

envelope.• These are handed out to children on New Years Day

and the older a child is, the more they get.• For example; a two year old may receive 1 or 2

thousand yen in their envelope, a five year old 5 thousand yen, and up it goes.

• How much do you think 2 thousand yen is? How about 5 thousand yen?

• How much cash do you think a teenager would receive?
