Using at the same time as other heating appliances that depend on the airfrom the room

Warning - danger of toxic fumesGreat care should be taken when using the cooker hood at thesame time and in the same room or area of the house as anotherheating appliance which depends on the air in the room.Such appliances include gas, oil, wood or coal-fired boilers andheaters, continuous flow or other water heaters, gas hobs, cookers or ovens which draw air in from the room and ductexhaust gases out through a chimney or extraction ducting.

When used in extraction mode, with or without an external motorfitted, or in recirculation mode with a recirculation box installedoutside the room, the appliance draws air in from the room inwhich it is installed and from neighbouring rooms.

If there is insufficient air, an underpressure will occur. The heatingappliance will be starved of oxygen, impairing combustion.Harmful gases could be drawn out of the chimney or extractionducting back into the room, with potentially fatal consequences.

ImportAppliances.com

THE EASIEST WAY TO SELF-IMPORT APPLIANCES DIRECT FROM EUROPE.

Warning and Safety instructions

9

In order to ensure safe operation, and to prevent gases given offby the heating appliances from being drawn back into the roomwhen the cooker hood and the heater are in operationsimultaneously, an underpressure in the room of 0.04 mbar (4 pa)is the maximum permissible.

Ventilation can be maintained by air inlets which cannot beblocked, in windows, doors or outside wall vents, or by othertechnical measures, such as ensuring that the cooker hood canonly be switched on when the heating appliance is switched off orvice versa. A ventilation brick alone is not generally sufficient toensure safe ventilation.

The overall ventilation condition of the dwelling must be taken intoaccount. If in any doubt, the advice of a competent builder or, forgas a qualified gas fitter (registered with an official gas safetybody in accordance with national safety regulations, GasSafe inthe UK) must be sought.

If the cooker hood is used in recirculation mode, where the air isdirected back into the room in which it is located, operating aheating appliance which depends on the room air at the sametime is no cause for concern.

Warning and Safety instructions

10

Correct use

Never use a naked flame beneath the cooker hood. To avoid thedanger of fire, do not flambé or grill over a naked flame. When switched on, the cooker hood could draw flames into the filter.Fat deposits could ignite, presenting a fire hazard.

The cooker hood can become damaged when exposed toexcessive heat.

– When using the cooker hood over a gas hob, ensure that anyburners in use are always covered by a pan. Switch the cookingzone off when a pan is removed, even for a short time.

– Select a pan which is suitable for the size of the burner.

– Regulate the flame so that it does not burn up the sides of thepan.

– Avoid overheating the pan (e.g. when cooking with a wok).

Always switch the cooker hood on when a cooking zone is in use, otherwise condensation may collect in the hood, which could causecorrosion.

When cooking with oil or fat, chip pans and deep fat fryers etc, donot leave the pans unattended. Never leave an open grill unattendedwhen grilling. Overheated oil and fat can ignite and could set thecooker hood on fire.

The cooker hood can get very hot during cooking due to heatrising from the hob.Do not touch the housing or the grease filters until the cooker hoodhas cooled down.

Correct installation

Refer to the cooker or hob manufacturer's instructions as towhether a cooker hood may be operated above the cooker/hob.

Safety regulations prohibit the fitting of a cooker hood over solidfuel stoves.

Insufficient distance between the cooker or hob and the cookerhood can result in damage to the hood. The minimum safety distances between the top of the cooker or hoband the bottom of the cooker hood given in the "Installation" sectionmust be maintained, unless the hob manufacturer states that agreater distance is required. If more than one cooking appliance is fitted beneath the cookerhood, and they have different minimum safety distances to thecooker hood, select the greater distance.

The distances given in "Installation" must be observed whenfitting the cooker hood.

Exhaust ducting must be of non-inflammable material. Suitablematerial is available from Miele specialist dealers or the Miele SparesDept.

The appliance must not be connected to a chimney or flue whichis in use. Neither should it be connected to ducting which ventilatesrooms with fireplaces.

If exhaust air is to be extracted into a chimney or ventilation ductno longer used for other purposes, seek professional advice.

Modes of operation

14

Depending on the model of the cookerhood, the following options areavailable:

Extraction modeThe cooking vapours are drawn in bythe cooker hood. The air is passed viathe edge extraction panels through thegrease filters, cleaned and thendirected outside.

Non-return flap

The non-return flap is designed toprevent the exchange of room andoutside air taking place. The flap is closed when the cookerhood is switched off. When the cooker hood is switched on,the non-return flap opens for thecooking vapours to be blown directlyoutside.

If the on-site ventilation system doesnot have a non-return flap, the non-return flap supplied must be fitted in theexhaust socket in the motor unit.

Recirculation mode(DUU 2900 conversion kit required)

The air is drawn in through the edgeextraction panels and then cleaned bythe grease filters. It is then directed intothe recirculation box where it is alsocleaned by the charcoal filters. Thecleaned air is then recirculated backinto the kitchen.

Operation with an externalmotor(...EXT model cooker hoods)

Cooker hoods set up for operation withan external motor have to be connectedto a Miele external motor located in asuitable position outside the room inwhich the cooker hood is installed. Theexternal motor is linked to the cookerhood via a connection cable and thenoperated using Con@ctivity 2.0 or viathe controls on the cooker hood or theremote control.

Operation (Automatic mode)

18

When Con@ctivity 2.0 is activated, thecooker hood always works in automaticmode (see "Activating [email protected]").

To operate the cooker hood manually, see "Cooking without Con@ctivity 2.0".

Cooking with Con@ctivity 2.0(Automatic mode) Switch a cooking zone on at the

power level you want.

The cooker hood lighting will come on.

After a few seconds the fan will comeon, first at power level 2, then it willswitch immediately to power level 1.

The cooker hood selects the powerlevel automatically during cooking.

This is determined by the total output ofthe hob, i.e, the number of cookingzones in operation and the power levelsselected.

If you select a higher power level orare using several cooking zones, thecooker hood will switch to a higherpower level.

When you reduce the power level orthe number of cooking zones on thehob, the cooker hood power level isalso reduced.

Examples for power levels 1 to 4

Reaction timeThe cooker hood reacts with a slightdelay because altering the power levelon the hob does not immediately resultin a reduction or increase in cookingvapours.

Because the hob transmits theinformation to the cooker hood atintervals, this can also cause delays.

The reaction can vary from a fewseconds to a couple of minutes.

Energy saving tips

26

This cooker hood operates veryefficiently and economically. Thefollowing will help you to save evenmore energy when using it:

– Ensure that there is sufficientventilation in the kitchen whencooking. In extraction mode, if thereis insufficient air flow the cookerhood cannot operate efficiently andthis causes increased operatingnoise levels.

– Always cook with the lowest possiblesetting. This produces fewer cookingvapours, so you can use a lowercooker hood power level andtherefore benefit from reducedenergy consumption.

– Use the Con@ctivity function. Thecooker hood will switch on and offautomatically at the optimum powerlevel for the cooking you are doing, which ensures low energyconsumption.

– If you are operating the cooker hoodmanually, please note the following:

– Check the power level selected onthe cooker hood. A lower powerlevel is generally sufficient for themajority of cooking. Only use theintensive setting when necessary.

– When a large volume of cookingvapours are being produced, switch to a high power level ingood time. This is more efficientthan operating the cooker hood forlonger to try to capture cookingvapours which have already beendistributed throughout the kitchen.

– Make sure that you switch thecooker hood off after use. If cooking vapours and odours stillneed to be removed from thekitchen air after cooking, use therun-on function. The fan willswitch off automatically after theselected run-on time.

– Clean or change the filters at regularintervals. Heavily soiled filters reduceperformance, increase the risk of fireand are unhygienic.

Important for appliances withstainless steel surfaces

(This information does not apply to thecontrols).

Stainless steel surfaces can becleaned with a proprietary non-abrasive cleaning agent designedspecifically for use on stainless steel.

To help prevent re-soiling, aproprietary conditioning agent forstainless steel (available from Miele)can also be used. Follow themanufacturer’s instructions on thepackaging.

Important for the controls

Do not leave soiling on the controlsfor any length of time.Otherwise they may sufferdiscolouration or damage.Remove soiling straight away.

Please observe the general notes oncleaning earlier in this section.

Do not use stainless steel cleaningagents on the controls.

Grease filters and edgeextraction panelsThe edge extraction panels and the re-usable metal grease filters in theappliance remove solid particles(grease, dust, etc.) from the kitchenvapours, preventing soiling of thecooker hood.

An oversaturated filter is a firehazard.

Cleaning interval

Grease which builds up on the edgeextraction panels and grease filters canharden over a long period of time andmake cleaning more difficult. For thisreason we recommend cleaning thepanels and grease filters every 3–4weeks.

The operating hours counter will remindyou to clean the edge extraction panelsand the grease filters regularly via thegrease filter symbol which will lightup.

You can set the operating hourscounter to suit the type of cookingyou do (see "Operation").

Cleaning and care

29

Removing the panels and greasefilters

The panels and the grease filters needto be removed for cleaning. Duringcooking, condensation forms on thepanels which evaporates after cooking. To avoid this dripping on you, do notremove the panels for approximatelytwo hours after cooking has finished.

The panels and grease filters can fallout when you are handling them. This can result in damage.Make sure you hold the panels andgrease filters securely at all timeswhen handling them.

To remove a panel, hold it at thesides, as shown. Pull it downwardsout of the front locking clip, unhook itat the back and remove it.

To take out a grease filter, release thelocking clip on the filter, lower thefilter slightly, unhook it at the backand remove it.

Cleaning the panels by hand

Follow the instructions under"Housing".

Cleaning the grease filters by hand

Clean the filters with a soft nylonbrush in a mild solution of hot waterand a small amount of washing-upliquid. Do not use "neat" washing upliquid.

Unsuitable cleaning agents

Unsuitable cleaning agents can causedamage to the surface of the filters ifused regularly.Do not use:

– cleaning agents containing descalingagents

– powder cleaners, cream cleaners

– aggressive multi-purpose cleaningagents or spray cleaners for grease

– oven sprays

Cleaning the panels and greasefilters in the dishwasher

Place the panels and the greasefilters as upright as possible or at aslight angle in the lower basket, withthe short sides upright, ensuring thespray arm is not obstructed.

Use a proprietary householddishwasher detergent.

Select a dishwasher programme witha wash temperature between 50°Cand 65°C.

Depending on the dishwasherdetergent used, cleaning the filters ina dishwasher can cause permanentdiscolouration to the surface. However, this will not affect thefunctioning of the filters in any way.

After cleaning

After cleaning, leave the filters to dryon an absorbent surface beforereplacing them.

When removing the panels and filtersfor cleaning, also clean off anyresidues of oil or fat from the nowaccessible parts of the casing toprevent the risk of these catching fire.

Replace the grease filters, makingsure that the locking clips are facingdown towards the hob.

If a grease filter is inadvertentlyreplaced upside down, insert a smallscrewdriver blade into the slit todisengage the clip.

To replace a panel, hold it firmly withboth hands, hook it over the retainingbar (see detail in the illustration).

Tilt the panel upwards at the frontand press it into the locking clip untilit clicks into position.

Installation recommendations– We recommend a minimum distance

of 700 mm and a maximum distanceof 1300 mm.

– Please be aware that if positionedtoo high, extraction will be inefficient.

– To achieve optimum vapourextraction, the cooker hood mustcover the hob. It should bepositioned centrally over the hob, notto the side or to the back of it.

– The hob should be no wider than thecooker hood, and if possible, itshould be narrower.

– If the cooker hood is being installedin a suspended ceiling, theinstallation surface all around thecooker hood must be at least 300mm larger than the cooker hooditself.

– The installation area must be easilyaccessible. The cooker hood shouldbe easily accessible and easy todismantle in the event that service isrequired. This should be taken intoconsideration when planning theposition of cupboards, shelves, ceilings or features in the vicinity ofthe cooker hood.

Connection for air extraction

38

If the cooker hood is used at thesame time as a heating appliancethat relies on oxygen from the sameroom, there is a risk in certaincircumstances of toxic fumesbuilding up.It is essential that the "Warning andSafety" instructions are observed. The cooker hood should be installedaccording to local and nationalbuilding regulations. Seek approvalfrom the building inspector wherenecessary.

Use smooth or flexible ducting madefrom approved non-flammablematerials for exhaust ducting.

When using an external motor, makesure that the exhaust ducting issufficiently rigid. The external motorcan cause an underpressure whichcan result in the exhaust ductingdistorting.

To achieve the most efficient airextraction with the lowest noiselevels, please note the following:

– To ensure efficient air extraction, thediameter of the exhaust ductingshould not be less than 150 mm.

– If flat ducting is being used, the crosssection must not be smaller than thecross sectional area of the exhaustsocket.

– The exhaust ducting should be asshort and straight as possible.

– Only use wide radius bends.

– The exhaust ducting must not bekinked or compressed.

– Ensure that all connections arestrong and airtight.

Remember that any constriction ofthe air flow will reduce extractionperformance and increase operatingnoise.

If the exhaust is ducted through anoutside wall, a telescopic wall vent ora roof vent (available as an optionalaccessory) is recommended.

If the exhaust air is to be ducted intoa flue, the ducting must be directedin the flow direction of the flue.

When ducting is horizontal it must belaid to slope away at at least 1 cmper metre. This is to ensure thatcondensate cannot drain back intothe appliance.

If the exhaust ducting is to runthrough rooms, ceiling space etc.where there may be great variationsin temperature between the differentareas, the problem of condensationwill need to be addressed. Theexhaust ducting will need to besuitably insulated.

Silencer

To achieve even further reductions innoise levels, a special silencer (optionalaccessory) can be fitted in the ductingsystem.

Extraction mode

The silencer not only reduces noisefrom the motor outside the house, butalso sounds from outside (e.g. trafficnoise). For this reason the silencer mustbe positioned as close as possible tothe ducting exit .

Extraction mode with external motor

To minimise noise from the motor in thekitchen, the silencer should bepositioned in front of the external motor if possible, or, if the ducting is long, above the exhaust socket on thecooker hood . In the case of anexternal motor located inside thehouse, fitting a silencer behind theexternal motor reduces the noise ofthe motor outside the house.
