The school uniform policy (attached to this letter) is very clear and will remain fundamentally the same for both sessions. However, for a variety of reasons we will be slightly more flexible with school uniform this session, before tightening up our uniform expectations in the summer of 2010. As a school community we place great value on school uniform. Uniform can provide students with a clear identity and sense of purpose, as well as offering all students a level playing field which allows them to concentrate on their work. When I started at the school in August I was keen to tighten up our approach because although most students wear full uniform at all points a small minority do not fully comply with the attached dress code. However, I soon realised that this was a complicated issue. Many families had bought their children uniform items which, despite contravening the uniform policy, had previously been accepted by the school. It was clear to me that some families would have to spend a great deal of money in order to bring their child’s uniform in line with our dress code and I did not consider this reasonable, given the difficult economic times that many families are experiencing. Accordingly, for this academic year only we will accept minor deviations from school uniform as long as students are making a reasonable attempt to comply with the dress code. This means, for example, we will accept smart black jeans even though they are not part of our school uniform. We will not, however, accept significant deviations from the dress code so white trainers, brown ‘Ugg’ boots or coloured jumpers are some of the items that are not appropriate for school just now. From session 2010-11 we will expect students to comply fully with a dress code which will be essentially the same, with minor alterations. This means that all students will be required to wear dress trousers or a black skirt. I am writing to advise you of this at an early stage to allow families to plan financially for this stricter approach to school uniform. To my mind, it would make sense for all future school clothing items that are bought to comply fully with the schools’ dress code. Please do contact me at the school if you would like to discuss this issue. I will also, of course, be available at parents’ evenings and other school events to discuss our approach. We believe it is fair and flexible and will allow us to move to a situation of full school uniform compliance without causing families financial hardship. 27 November 2009 Dear Parent/Guardian School Uniform Update

In our recent newsletter I suggested that I would write to parents updating them on our approach to school uniform for this and next session.
