15 unforgettable days in a park of 14 hectares at the gates of the PyreneesNature is an endless source of inspiration for the artist, as well as an indispensable teacher. Plein air painting in particular is a genre with a rich history in France, from Corot to Monet. !The attempt to capture a convincing sense of light and an interesting composition is both a pleasure and a challenge. In no other setting is the artist faced with such a large degree of visual information to be distilled and translated for the viewer by focusing on the bare essentials. !At the same time, landscape painting is forgivable and malleable, a genre that allows for varied interpretation.

Naomi Marino, contemporary realist painter

Naomi Marino is a contemporary realist painter based in Northern California. After studying art in a university setting as well as apprenticing with Bay Area Realist Charles Becker, Naomi’s interest in Dutch still life, Renaissance art and 19th century master paintings led her to relocate to Florence, Italy, in pursuit of. a strong foundation of technical mastery in painting and drawing.

A unique artist“I believe in the intense, careful observation of nature, and the study of

time honored techniques combined with a contemporary discourse; craftsmanship and artistic vision are equally essential.”

ScheduleIn these two two-week long courses (July 6th - 17th and also July 20th - 31st), students will be introduced to materials and a sound working method for painting outside - a method that can be applied to other subject matter but that is particularly helpful when called upon to work in an environment where the light and shadows are changing rapidly. !Naomi will share her concepts and practices for creating convincing representational works in the environs of a 19th century Chateau La Tisnere, near Pau, at the foothills of the Pyrenees in scenic Gascony. !Mornings will be dedicated to quick alla prima paintings to capture the sense of light and explore composition. These small paint sketches, executed within two to three hours, are the best exercises for training the eye, capturing the essence of a scene, and increasing painting speed and confidence, which is important when painting outside. !Afternoons will be dedicated to a longer painting, one per week, which will enable students to take their time to develop a more finished work, with careful attention to tonal value, subtle color shifts, and edge control.
