November 2019 The SHOEBOXES! SHOEBOXES! SHOEBOXES! We have many Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes available for you - just waiting to be filled with your love and goodies! Many of you already have your shoe boxes finished — the Motley Sunday School class has already packed 161 shoe boxes! — but for those of you who have waited, it’s time to get going! New to shoe boxes? These precious boxes filled with simple toys, t-shirts, games, school supplies, hygiene/hair items, balls, jump ropes, and more will be shipped, via Samaritan’s Purse, to children in poverty and/or war-torn countries. But more than that, each box will be given with the Gospel message in that child’s native language, and the opportunity to attend a 12 week class that teaches the salvation story. It is a complete package of love! We hope everyone will pack a shoe box! If you can, let each person in your family pack a box. Or consider giving shoe boxes in honor of friends and family members this Christmas, giving them a card stating that an Operation Christmas Child shoe box was packed in their honor! Be creative! Each shoe box requires $9 shipping — this money enables this gift to go to the processing centers to be checked and sorted by ages, packed into cartons, loaded onto pallets, and shipped all over the world. Really a bargain price for overseas shipping! Thank you for your support of our Shoe Box Ministry as we work to spread God’s love and His message to the ends of the earth! And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me, in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Acts 1:8 As they were about to enter the Promised Land, the people of Israel were brought to a renewed commitment. The times were about to change. The manna was about to cease. Now their supply would come from farms and vineyards as a blessing of God through their labor, not with morning dew to be gathered each day but the Sabbath. Furthermore, they would move into permanent structures and no longer live in tents in the wilderness. Given the changes in the way they experienced Gods blessing and care, there was a concern that they might wrongly interpret their situation in life. So God through Moses reminded them: "But you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, that He may confirm His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day. (Deuteronomy 8:18) So how does one remember the Lord? How does one live with the perspective that he or she is blessed and cared for by God, that it is God who provided the clothing, shelter, food, and all things to enjoy? The answer is to worship God with the Tithe. Worship helps us remember that the Lord is at the center of our life and is the sovereign to whom we owe all allegiance, loyalty, love and deference. The tithe is means by which we honor him, obey him, and declare to our unruly hearts that we will not be ruled by any foreign god or by stuff, but we will be ruled only by the King of kings and Lord of lords. Deuteronomy repeatedly recalls the people to a previous understanding of the matters of life. Remember,the writer says over and over again. Every time we are about to eat, we rememberwhen we pray first and express thanksgiving. As the day closes, we rememberas we lead our children in prayer thanking God for his care through the day and seeking his protection through the night. When we break the bread and lift the cup, we rememberthe grace of God in Jesus Christ. All of these are important acts of remembering. It is, however, through the tithe that we rememberthat we do not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God(Deuteronomy 8:3). That is, every day we live by his promise and faithfulness, therefore we can tithe knowing that he who provided to this point will provide still. Remember to turn in your pledge card when it comes. Your pledge both helps you to be deliberate and thoughtful about your devotion to Jesus Christ, and it helps the Church to be thoughtful in planning for the new year. Thank you for your careful and prayerful participation. Please see inside for a special Anniversary insert!

And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me, in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Acts 1:8

As they were about to enter the Promised Land, the people of Israel were brought to a renewed commitment. The times were about to change. The manna was about to cease. Now their supply would come from farms and vineyards as a blessing of God through their labor, not with morning dew to be gathered each day but the Sabbath. Furthermore, they would move into permanent structures and no longer live in tents in the wilderness. Given the changes in the way they experienced God’s blessing and care, there was a concern that they might wrongly interpret their situation in life. So God through Moses reminded them:

"But you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, that He may confirm His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.” (Deuteronomy 8:18)

So how does one remember the Lord?

“Remember,” the writer says over and over again. Every time we are about to eat, we “remember” when we pray first and express thanksgiving. As the day closes, we “remember” as we lead our children in prayer thanking God for his care through the day and seeking his protection through the night. When we break the bread and lift the cup, we “remember” the grace of God in Jesus Christ. All of these are important acts of remembering. It is, however, through the tithe that we “remember” that we do “not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Deuteronomy 8:3). That is, every day we live by his promise and faithfulness, therefore we can tithe knowing that he who provided to this point will provide still.

MOSAIC NEWS

What a wonderful Christian Tours trip we had the first week of October to Washington, DC to see the Museum of the Bible and to Lancaster, PA to tour Amish country and see the Sight-N-Sound production of JESUS! Lots of memories have been

made over the past two years as we have traveled with this Christian Tour company and visited places of value in our Christian walk.

Later this past month, over 100 seniors, friends and family enjoyed the MOSAIC Annual Pig Picking. Roy Burris and Worth Todd cooked the pig which was enjoyed by all. A great BIG “Thank You” to all who assisted in making this night of fellowship/fun a success. A special appreciation to Norma Judd who delivered our devotional, which was perfect for the event. Marlene Burris and Ruth Tucker were also vital in coordinating this event. We appreciate all of the feedback from participants in regard to this ministry and will use that information to improve and grow.

November is here and we have a Thanksgiving dinner planned for our seniors and our friends from NOAH. The menu will include turkey, dressing, a variety of sides, and desserts (pies). Reserve your spot for Tuesday, November 26, at 12:00pm in Morris Hall with Sue Webb, Senior Ministries Coordinator by calling the church office; 637-4022 or emailing [email protected].

Our UMW will have a bake sale on November 24!

Monies raised at our bake sales are distributed locally in our

community. On Sept. 10th

we distributed $3,000; bringing our

total distributions for this year to approximately $11,000,

which includes $4,000 that has been given for hurricane

relief.

An old prayer you could adapt and pray before you engage in spiritual service to Christ: Veni Spiritus, pasce pastorum, duc ducem, aperi aperturo, da daturo, Christe Kyrie, erbarme dich unser. Come, Holy Spirit, shepherd him who is to shepherd others; guide him who is to guide others; discover to him [the Scriptures] who is to discover them to others; give to him who is to give to others, Lord Christ, have mercy upon us!

From the pastor. . .

First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, in order that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony borne at the proper time. And for this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying) as a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. Therefore I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and dissension. (1 Timothy 2:1‑8, NASV)

As I prepare this page, events in Syria and Afghanistan occupy some attention in our nation. Russia seems intent on enlarging borders as in the Cold War days. The media speaks of the Ukraine more frequently than when Russia annexed the Crimea. The partisan fury usually reserved for an election year already makes us feel good and/or bad. Support for our President is low. Lower still is support for Congress. Impeachment is on the agenda. Several of our Church young men together with their families are affected by the international conflicts. So I invite us to live the teaching of Scripture and to pray.

It is prudent and right to pray for our nation and its leaders. To assist your prayers and to stimulate some breadth in praying, I have added the following prayers. While they are written with regard to one’s own nation, let them give guidance for your prayers for other nations as well. And let us learn to pray broadly. We have Christian sisters and brothers scattered throughout all the nations of the world. Some of them are persecuted severely because of their commitment to Jesus Christ.

May God help us to pray, and may the Holy Spirit intercede for us. May our country be led in a path that is good, true, and just. And may the church of Jesus Christ properly represent his kingdom during this time.

O God, most merciful and most gracious, who hast encouraged us in thy holy Word to make supplication for all men, we beseech thee for all thy brethren of this nation, of the great cities and quiet country places, high and low, rich and poor together, that thou wouldst prosper agriculture, manufacture, commerce, and every lawful industry; that thou wouldst cleanse our national life from besetting sins, and remove all causes of division from amongst the people; that thou wouldst fill our hearts with thy love and our homes with thy peace.

And for all the nations of the human race, with their rulers that thou in thy providence wouldst make an end of war, cruelty, oppression, and ignorance, and grant unto every land the blessings of peace and order, justice and spiritual knowledge.

We beseech thee for the church universal, throughout the world, in all its branches and in all its ministries; that thou wouldst further with thy continual favor her work in this land, and in the distant parts of the earth; that thou wouldst heal the divisions among thy Son’s disciples, and hasten everywhere the coming of the kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ; in whose name we pray. Amen. (Minister’s Prayer Book, John W. Doberstein, ed., Fortress Press, 1986, p. 37.)

O Lord our Governor, whose glory is in all the world; We commend this nation to thy merciful care, that being guided by the Providence, we may dwell secure in thy peace. Grant to the President of the United States, and to all in authority, wisdom and strength to know and to do thy will. Fill them with the love of truth and righteousness; and make them ever mindful of their calling to serve this people in thy fear; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God world without end. Amen. (The Book of Common Prayer, 1945, The Order for Daily Morning Prayer.)

Almighty God, who hast given us this good land for our heritage; We humbly beseech thee that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of thy favour and glad to do thy will. Bless our land with honourable industry, sound learning, and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogancy, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues. Endue with the spirit of wisdom those to whom in thy Name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that, through obedience to thy law, we may show forth thy praise among the nations of the earth. In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in thee to fail; all which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (The Book of Common Prayer, 1945, Prayers.)

O Almighty God, the supreme Governor of all things, whose power no creature is able to resist, to whom it belongeth justly to punish sinners, and to be merciful to those who truly repent; Save and deliver us, we humbly beseech thee, from the hands of our enemies; that we, being armed with thy defence, may be preserved evermore from all perils, to glorify thee, who art the only giver of all victory; through the merits of thy Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (The Book of Common Prayer, 1945, Prayers.)

For your prayers and your help:

From time to time, staff positions open up. We desire to fill these with the persons of God’s choice. Toward this end we ask your prayers for our Staff-Parish Committee (the personnel committee). We also ask you to recommend persons who can fill these ministry positions. All our roles are part of the ministry of Christ through Garber Church. We seek persons whose comportment, work and manner of meeting persons will represent Christ very well. These are positions we are currently seeking to fill:

Student Ministries, working full-time in ministry with our middle and high school students and sharing in the worship ministry of the congregation;

Media and Communications, strengthening the media presence of Garber Church and strengthening our communications effectiveness;

Bookkeeper, provides primary oversight of all accounting records, bill payments, deposits, account management, and payroll for the church office and preschool; give oversight to the counter team; is the contact for persons needing to discuss their contributions; assist the finance committee;

Site Team, provide for the proper environment of much of Garber’s ministry including cleanliness, tidiness, set up and rearrangement; these persons are often the face of Garber Church’s ministry as they meet and greet those entering our property and facilities.

I wanted to share this with you . . .While we were packing on Saturday night an young man (a member of one of

the high school groups who helped us out so much this weekend) stopped me and asked a

couple of questions about Backpack Blessings. Since it is a little unusual for a high school

student to be so interested, I walked a few times around the circle with him and talked about

our program and what it means to the kids who receive the food. At the end of our few trips

around the circle, he looked at me and said, "You don't know this, but I received these week-

end food bags when I was in elementary and middle school and it made a huge difference

for me and my family. Thank you"

And that, friends, is why we do it! Not every child who receives our food bags will grow up

to be in the National Honor Society (or Interact, or AVID, not sure which group this young

man was in), but I was reminded on Saturday night that what we do goes beyond food and

beyond the nutritional value of the 10 items placed in each bag.
