Supplemental Annuity Overview

• The Tax-Sheltered Annuity Program is a supplemental retirement savings program authorized by section 403(b), 401(k), and 457 of the Internal Revenue Code.

• Money is set aside on a pre or post tax basis through a salary reduction agreement with BCSD for supplemental retirement purposes. By using the vendors offered by the BCSD, the money grows until you withdraw it at retirement.

• All BCSD are eligible to participate. Eligible employees can enroll at any time.

• Your pension plan (SCRS or State ORP) does not provide an amount equal to your salary. An additional annuity can provide a healthy supplement to your pension.

Bloodborne Pathogens What is a blood borne pathogen?

● Bloodborne pathogens are microorganisms present in human blood or other potentially infectious materials (OPIM) that can cause disease in individuals who are exposed to the blood containing the pathogen. Others are common, such as the hepatitis virus and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

● In addition to blood, potentially infectious materials include any fluid that might be infected, such as: saliva, tears, amniotic (uterine) fluid, synovial (joint) fluid, cerebrospinal fluid, pleural (lung) fluid, peritoneal fluid (abdominal cavity fluid).

● Two bloodborne pathogens are specifically addressed by OSHA standards; hepatitis B (HBV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

● Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver. Several strains of the hepatitis virus have been identified; hepatitis B, and hepatitis C are the most common. (Hepatitis B and C are bloodborne.)

● Hepatitis B (HBV) is an infection of the liver caused by the hepatitis B virus. Symptoms are “flu-like” and may not occur for some time after exposure, up to 9 months. Hepatitis B can survive in dried blood for up to 7 days.

● HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus that affects the body’s natural immune defenses.

Page 42: Please review the presentation which includes Policies, … · 2020-05-11 · information about Berkeley County School District’s Policies, Retirement, Safety and Insurance & Benefits.

Bloodborne Pathogens

Anytime there is blood-to-blood contact with infected blood or body fluids, there is a slight potential for transmission. Unbroken skin forms an impervious barrier against bloodborne pathogens, however, infected blood can enter your system through: ● Open sores● Cuts● Abrasions● Acne● Sunburn and blisters● Eyes● Nose● Mouth

WHO?
