Third Sunday of Lent

While we were still sinners Christ died for us.

— Romans 5:8

Today’s Readings First Reading When the people grumbled to Moses for water in the desert, the Lord heard and brought forth water from the rock for all to drink (Exodus 17:3-7). Psalm If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts (Psalm 95). Second Reading God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:1-2, 5-8). Gospel Ask, and you will be given living water so that you will never thirst again (John 4:5-42 [5-15, 19b-26, 39a, 40-42]). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass (c) 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

Each time today’s Gospel story is read, I can’t help but think of the many television commercials I’ve seen depicting perspiring ath-letes lifting a beverage to their lips while the scorching sun beats down on them. Our culture has definite ideas about how to quench thirst. Today, those ideas are turned upside down. The Samaritan woman operates, initially, on the TV commercial level. She asks Jesus for the flowing water so that she will not have to keep coming to the well. Jesus then talks about what real thirst is, and how he, and he alone, can quench that thirst. Lent calls us to find those places deep within ourselves where we thirst. In our thirst, as did the Israelites, we cry out to God asking for springs of living water. Deep down we know that only the Lord can satisfy these thirsts. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Giving Out Not Giving Up It has long been a Lenten practice to give something up for the Len-ten season. These have included things like smoking, drinking, as well as all kinds of dietary treats, sweets and other desserts. Some of this tied into the practices of fasting, which we will cover next week, as well as abstaining from eating meat on Fridays. In the past few years there is much more of an emphasis on what we do rather than what we don’t do.

With that in mind, I would like to speak about the second element of Jewish spirituality we focus on, namely, almsgiving. You might notice that we have a good many “causes” that we sponsor more during Lent than the rest of the year. The tie in is, not so much end of the year de-ductions for tax purposes, as much as the spiritual practice of almsgiving.

If we were to examine the definition of almsgiving, one would find the following, anything given in charity. As I have stated in the past, it is not my expectation that every household would give to all of the groups and charities that present to us. But the act of donating our treasure is a Lenten practice we should all consider.

I want to thank all the people who switched over to electronic giving through Faith Direct, as well as all those who have increased their weekly offertory by $5, which is what we asked, or more. Hopefully, you have seen in the monthly comparisons for January and February that there has been a bump up in our revenues. It is making a differ-ence. If you have not switched over to electronic giving, or have not increased your giving, Lent is a perfect time to start. We will be hold-ing some informal gatherings of parishioners to further educate you on some of the details of our financial picture. There is too much to get into during the Sunday homilies but everyone has a right to know since we are all the owners and caregivers of the parish, or better yet, we are all family and this is our household.

As to whatever other charities you participate in, that is a personal choice. I would like to put in a good word for an essential part of our parish, namely, the archdiocese of Newark. I know there are many who have lost faith in the diocese, but let me make a few points. Recently, we have been given permission to maintain our Maintenance & Repair collection as a restricted fund for the parish. For now, it is a two year extension, at which time it will be reexamined. We need to show good faith to receive the benefit of the doubt from the diocese. In the past our leadership has not always been strong, however, Cardinal Tobin should not suffer the burden of past sins.

Just as our parish has outreach to people in need, so too the dio-cese helps poor parishes, retired priests who have worked for little money, seminarians who make the rare choice of accepting God’s call, as well as sponsoring programs to many with all kinds of needs. We were initially given a higher goal but later with an appeal, saw our goal lowered by 10% our goal of the past 15 years. The amount pledged so far is embarrassing as to doing our part. Also, not a pen-ny from the appeal goes to lawsuits, which are really more in the past, despite ongoing headlines. Annual Appeal envelopes remain on a shelf in the narthex and I hope you will consider participating in the mission in which we all share. Place the envelope into the regu-lar collection on any Sunday. We have only pledged 16% of our new, lowered goal, and I know we can do better.

So, if you have given something up for Lent, I am asking you to con-sider giving something out, to help improve the lives of those who need it. As always, I thank you for doing what you can. I will update you as to the progress we make.

In light of the coronavirus and as precaution, Coffee & Community is suspended.

Mass is offered for the support, healing and recovery of not only those individuals directly affected with the abuse of alcohol and/or drugs, but also for anyone involved in the life of the alcoholic or drug addict. A open support group, Meeting of Hope, follows the mass. For info call 201-768-7565.

Sharing the Gift of Treasure Stewardship Corner

“Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again.” - John 4:13

Jesus reminds us that material things, even something as basic as water, can never satisfy us for long. When we build our lives around material possessions we always want more. True Joy and Peace only comes when we follow Jesus; when we become more “God-centered” and less “self-centered”.

Thank you for your generosity to St. Catharine’s!

St. Catharine Food Pantry Did you know that St. Catharine’s has a Food Pantry? Since No-vember 2011, the pantry has been helping numerous people/families in our community by providing bags of groceries to those in need, while ensuring privacy and confidentiality. If you or someone you know has an immediate or recurring need for gro-ceries, please call or text Rosemary at 201-661-3651. We are grateful for the support of our many benefactors, who keep the pantry a reliable source of food for those in need.

Prayer for Our Troops O God of mercy, we ask You to protect in a special way those who are fighting for us and for the country we love. Bless them and take care of them. Give them strength. Give them comfort. Touch them with Your gentle hand and let them know that You are near them. Hasten the day, dear Lord, when we may all enjoy the blessings of peace once more. Amen.
