Summer Sunday School Plans: Due to the positive feedback

from last year, we will be offering up stand-alone, topical bible

school choices again this summer. With everyone's busy summer

plans, this will allow you to pick a topic that interests you each week

and not feel like you've missed out on an integral lesson from an

entire unit. However, We Need You! Please consider leading a topic

of your choice this summer. We are hoping to offer 2 choices each

week for 8 weeks (16 total). Please see a member of the

Discipleship Focus Team (John Childs, Anna Manikus or Wayne

Wampler) if you are interested.

Brethren and the Civil War

On May 19-22, 1861, the Brethren held their Yearly Meeting at Beaver Creek. This is a particularly historic and

meaningful gathering that deserves commemoration because it occurred in our district during the turbulent,

opening days of the Civil War. Through the winter and spring, 1861, as the nation spiraled towards disunion,

the Dunkers debated whether to change the location of their Meeting. As nonresistants and opponents of

slavery, Brethren were a conspicuous minority in a slave-holding region preparing for war. Northern Dunkers

feared that travel south was too risky, but Virginia Brethren countered that it was just as dangerous for them to

journey north and the Meeting proceeded as planned. The turnout was large, but only four northern

congregations sent representatives. The editor of the local newspaper, the Rockingham Register, visited and

wrote a lengthy and very interesting report.

Interested persons can consult the Annual Conference minutes and Roger Sappington’s The Brethren in the

New Nation. For further information, including early nineteenth-century hymns that are still familiar and in the

blue hymnal, contact Steve Longenecker, Professor of History, Bridgewater College, [email protected],

From the District…. Church Growth & Evangelism Team In this society where it seems that there is a wall up against anything to do with Christ and His church, it can be

so difficult to share the truth of the gospel in many settings. Yet, one thing I have seen is that many times,

prayer is more welcome. In this society of someone's "personal business" and "privacy", offering to pray for an

individual can break down walls and open doors to deeper sharing. I came across an interesting example the

other day regarding two men at a restaurant waiting for their meal to be served. When the waitress brought

them their food, one of the gentleman simply said, "We are going to be praying over our food, and I'd just like to

know if there is anything we could pray about for you when we pray. Moved by this gesture, she began to open

up and shared several difficult issues. The men assured her that they would be earnestly lifting these up in

prayer. Upon leaving the tip, they left a tract with their church address printed on the back, making themselves

available for continued relational ministry. Like this waitress, people just need to be heard and let know that

they important enough for us as believers to take time to intercede on their behalf. If they are important to

Christ, let them be important to us. David Chappell, Associate Pastor, White Hill CoB
