WHAT IS BPL?

• Broadband over Power Line (BPL) is a technology that allows voice and Internet data to be transmitted over utility power lines.

• To make use of BPL, subscribers use neither a phone, cable nor a satellite connection

• Instead, a subscriber installs a modem that plugs into an ordinary wall

AN OVERVIEW OF HOW BPL WORKS

• At a high-level ,a Power line Telecom network consists of three key segments, the backbone, the middle mile, and the last mile.

• We are trying to address the “last mile” segment all the way into “the home” market.

• BPL technology works by sending high-speed data along, medium or low voltage power lines into the user’s home.

• The user only needs to plug an electrical cord from the “BPL modem” into any electrical outlet then plug an Ethernet or USB cable into the Ethernet card or USB interface on their PC.

• It is a network interface adapter which uses the electric power line which is already in our home or offices as a medium for communication.

• It supports up to 200mbps network speed.

OBJECTIVES• Understanding the BPL system.• To use the internet connection of computer1 in

computer2.• To share files between computer1 and computer2.• To establish two way audio and video

communication over power line1. Of length 5mts2. Between two rooms and3. Between two floors(2nd and 4th)

CHALLENGES

• Internet connection is not continuous.• Beyond 300mb,file transfer is interrupted.• Speed limitation of about 5mbps to 10mbps.• Transfer of video is a challenge due to load

and power loss.
