wages’.As for the Pirates that remain,

they are a hardier bunch that either from pride, principle, and/or hate refused the pardon and ‘bribe’ as they viewed it. No matter how badly outnumbered, how many ports close their gates to them, they refuse to give in and keep fighting to the bitter end. The drive for vengeance for lives, family, honor, friends lost is all many of them need, however, the fact that many of them can get fortune along side theses acts is an added bonus. It is these fortunes that drives Governors, Dukes and other figureheads willing turn a blind eye to Pirates taking port for the protection it provides to their own vessels and the added gold such ‘patrons’ bring.

To this day merchant vessels will pay for escort them as they travel for protection from the pirates, which itself is a gamble as some pirates will play the role of protectorate force to raid those very same ship. Some ships would oft take the better and (as they viewed it) wiser choice to pay a simple ‘toll’ to travel in ‘Pirate Waters’. While a select few ships work off the beaten path and will sell and trade to the pirates for much needed supplies at reduced rates which would not only leave their normal ships free attack from the pirates they traded with but would also result in those pirates attacking other pirates from attacking their business partners.
