Howe quarterback Austin Haley threw for three touchdowns atBonham Friday night. Michelle Carney/Howe Enterprise.

0) took advantage of everyopportunity Friday night inBonham against the Warriors (1-4;0-1). The Bulldogs took home animpressive 66-27 win and snappeda 6-game district losing streak andan 11-game road district losingstreak. They did so by amassing594 total yards which is the most infive years (618 against Tom Beanin 2014). Howe's 66 points is alsothe most since scoring 77 on TomBean in 2015. Most of the scoringon Friday night was done by JalenThornton who rushed for fourtouchdowns on the night includinga 54-yarder and a 77-yarder.Freshman quarterback AustinHaley threw for another threetouchdowns en route to a 10-for-17performance for 301 yards.

Bonham began the game with theball and were quickly turned awayby the Bulldog defense. Howe'sfirst drive was an impressive 11-play, 78-yard drive that included akey 43-yard pass from Haley toCaiden Harmon. The Harmonreception set up a would-be 1-yardtouchdown by Thornton on a directsnap. Kevin Flores' PAT was thefirst of nine successful attemptsand Howe led 7-0 with 7:28 left inthe first quarter.

Pressure from freshman MatthewBearden caused a fumble whichwas recovered by Arturo Lowderto give Howe great field position atthe Bonham 26 yard line. After a24-yard run by Brandon Williams,Thornton slid in on a direct snapfor a 2-yard touchdown. Howe led14-0 with 6:04 left in the first.

Bonham's next possession alsoended in a fumble when JacksonAdkins stripped freshman runningback Jarren Ross. Thorntonrecovered it to give Howe the ballat the Bonham 46-yard line. Oneplay later, Haley threw his firsttouchdown of the night when hefound a wide open Williams whoslipped out of the backfield. Howeled 21-0 with 4:38 remaining in thefirst quarter.

Both teams traded punts beforeHowe forced a turnover-on-downswith 17 seconds left in the firstquarter. That gave the ball to Howeat their own 42 yard line. One playlater, Haley threw a screen pass toHarmon who took advantage of aSteven Waldrip block whichsprung him for a 58-yard score.

Howe improved their lead to 28-0with five seconds left in the first.

Linebacker Noah Campbell madean outstanding play on Bonham'sensuing drive on fourth down giveHowe the ball at their own 27 yardline. But the Dogs quickly scoredagain with Haley hitting JordanJones on a wide open slant thatwent for 73 yards. Howe's leadincreased to 35-0 with 9:16 left inthe second quarter.

Bonham's offense finally got ontrack by going 55 yards on sevenplays and scoring on a quarterbackplunge by Brant Stuber from the 1yard line. Howe's lead was cut to35-7 with 6:02 left in the second.

Howe's next possession ended in aThornton punt which set up a 7-play drive for Bonham. Facing afourth down, Warriors Head CoachJohn Fish opted to attempt a 32-yard field goal, but NickRhinehart's attempt was no good.

With 1:23 remaining on the firsthalf clock, Howe moved 71 yardsdown to the Bonham 9 yard linebut were unable to punch it in astime ran out.

It took Howe no time to score inthe second half as they openedwith the ball at the 25 yard line. Onthe first play, Thornton raced 75yards for the score to up the Howeadvantage to 42-7.

Both teams traded punts beforeHarmon intercepted a Stuber passin the endzone. Howe had to punt, and the Warriors continued tomove the ball with a 7-play, 45-yard drive that ended on a -yardpass from Stuber to Elliott Ross.Howe's lead was cut to 42-14 with3:43 left in the third quarter.

The Warriors continued to tickaway at Howe and Jerrell Stewardscored on a reverse for a 34-yardscore. That made it a 3-score gameat 42-21 with 37 second left in thethird.

But Howe quickly pushed the leadback up when Thornton went 54-yards on the first play to giveHowe a 49-21 lead with 13seconds left in the third. Howe'snext points came on a 30-yardFlores field goal to cap off a 7-

million acres of wind turbines, solarpanels, and battery storage, morethan 10 times the amount of landcurrently used for electricitygeneration. The miles oftransmission lines areconservatively estimated to increase70% and require another 1.2million acres, bringing the totalland use to more than 6 millionacres, more than five times the sizeof Harris County.

The environmental impact of thisbuildout cannot be overstated.Using less dense energy sourceswill unnecessarily increase ourfootprint on the earth, requiregovernment appropriation ofprivate property through eminentdomain, and almost certainly affectsensitive wildlife habitat.Renewable doesn’t equal cheap—orenvironmentally friendly.

Worse yet, going all-renewable willhave no discernible climate benefit.Even if we could achieve a totaloverhaul of our energy system by2030, climate models used by theUnited Nations indicate it wouldhave no practical effect. Convertingto solely wind and solar electricitywould cut global temperatures byless than two hundredths of adegree Celsius in 2050 and just fourhundredths in 2100.

The Green New Deal is a bad dealfor Texas, and the skyrocketingcosts and lost jobs aren’t worth themultibillion-dollar expense.

Proponents of the expansiveclimate programs like the GreenNew Deal don’t recognize that fewof the world’s great achievementshave come from top-down, one-size-fits-all government mandates.Throughout human history, the bestsolutions have come from privatecitizens rolling up their sleeves andcreating their own innovativeapproaches to the challenges facingthem.

The power of the free market, notthe power of government, willcontinue to grow prosperity andreduce poverty worldwide throughthe power of reliable, affordable, dense, and abundant energy.

Environmental policy should servemankind, not the other way around.

That’s how much the Green NewDeal could increase the averageTexas households’ annualelectricity bills, according to newresearch unveiled by the TexasPublic Policy Foundation (TPPF).An in-depth analysis of Texaselectric utility data shows thattransitioning Texas to 100 percentwind and solar electricitygeneration by 2030 would causeyearly costs to increase nearlytenfold.

For a resolution that claims to fighteconomic injustice as well asclimate change, the Green NewDeal isn’t much of a deal after all.

TPPF researchers found that if theGreen New Deal’s renewableenergy directive was fullyimplemented by 2030, the annualcost of powering Texas would risefrom $13 billion today to awhopping $120 billion.

Of course, $120 billion is anunthinkable, almost laughable, burden to saddle the people ofTexas with. But unfortunately, champions of the Green New Dealare deadly serious.

Getting renewables from 8 percentto 100 percent of our electricgeneration nationwide isn’t aproblem of politics, but of scale andphysics. Even a partial switch torenewables would be prohibitivelyexpensive. Transitioning Texas tojust 50 percent wind and solar by2030—a relatively modest increase, given that we are the number onestate for renewable generation—would cause annual costs to rise by250 percent.

And those numbers don’t take intoaccount a large-scale rollout ofelectric vehicles, which wouldincrease electricity demand andfurther increase costs to consumersand businesses.

The financial expense isn’t the onlyissue with one-size-fits-nonerenewable mandates like the GreenNew Deal and other priceyproposals by presidentialcontenders. Ironically, they alsocome with a colossal cost to ourenvironment—instead of a benefit.

Wind and solar power are by natureless dense than fossil fuels, meaning they require more land toproduce. Going 100 percentrenewable would require nearly 5

TheBritish soldiers nicknamed thesnub-nosed truck that had provedso durable, “Bulldog Mack,” aftertheir country’s mascot, the Britishbulldog. Sometime after 1918, thecanine logo was added to the Macktruck design.

SECONDS COUNT IN AN EMERGENCY! That's why the City of Howehas instituted the CodeRED Emergency Notification System - an ultra

high-speed telephone communication service for emergencynotifications. This system allows us to telephone all or targetedareas in case of an emergency situation that requires immediateaction (such as a boil-water notice, missing child or evacuation

notices). The system is capable of dialing 60,000 phone numbers perhour. It then delivers a pre-recorded message describing the

situations to a live person or an answering machine in the affectedarea possibly including instructions requiring action on the part ofthe recipient. Once the situation is remedied, another call will beplaced to the area signaling that the issue has been addressed and

that normal activities can be resumed.

The following information is required to add a telephone number intothe "CodeRED" database: first and last name; address (physicaladdress, no P.O. boxes); city; state; Zip Code; and primary phone

number. The system works with cellular phones but requires a validstreet address. When entering information, please fill out all of thescreens because the newest data entered will replace the old data.Sign up by visiting http://www.co.grayson.tx.us/page/oem.cred

found her calling as the first African-American woman to become a pilot. As a famous stunt pilot in the 1920s,she toured the country, and all eyeslooked skyward to see her perform.

Coleman was born outside Atlanta,Texas, in January 1892 in a one-roomcabin. She was the twelfth of thirteenchildren in a family of sharecroppers. Her father was part Cherokee and partAfrican-American with her mother aformer slave. At the age of two, thefamily moved to Waxahachie. As ayoung girl, she walked four miles tothe one-room school where shedeveloped a talent for math.

She briefly attended college inOklahoma before dropping out. In1916, she moved to Chicago with acouple of her brothers and foundwork as a manicurist. As World WarI progressed, she was mesmerized bythe daring tales of World War Ifighter pilots that were told byreturning veterans. With stories ofwomen becoming pilots, she begandreaming of her own career as apilot. Coleman took a second job andstarted saving her money.

Harriet Quimby of Michigan becamethe first American woman pilot in1911, and dozens more followed. Butthere were no opportunities forminority women to even enter flightschools. Friends suggested Colemantake lessons in France. She left in1920, and by June 1921, she gainedher pilots license, the first African-American or Native Americanwoman ever to receive a license. Thenews was met with acclaim in theUnited States. She spent the nextyear working on further training.

There were few occupations for pilotsat the time. Military aviationprograms were still very small andwould not admit women. The U. S.Postal Service had its air mailprogram in effect before World War Ibut would not hire women pilots. The major airlines would not beformed for several more years. Mostair travel in the 1920s, in fact, was byZeppelin airship rather than airplanes.

The best option, and the most visible, was the air show. Airplanes were notyet two decades old, and many werefascinated by the new invention andthe sight of death-defying aerialacrobatics. At air shows, pilotswould perform complicatedmaneuvers, stuntmen would walk onthe wings, and some would evenparachute out of planes.

Coleman toured the country with airshows, billed as “Brave Bessie” or

Bessie Colemanhad said as a childthat she wanted tomake something ofherself. For anAfrican-Americanat the turn of thecentury, there werefew opportunities. With the inventionof airplanes, she

“Queen Bessie.” The planeColeman used most often was theJN-4 “Jenny” biplane. In 1923,she bough her first plane, but shewas seriously injured in an airshow when it crashed a few dayslater. She saved up to buy anotherplane the next year. In themeantime, she continued to touracross the country.

“In the air is the only place freefrom prejudice,” Coleman oftensaid. In the air, pilots can onlyrely on their training, instincts, and determination, qualities thatthat do not know skin color orgender. She gave presentations atAfrican-American churches andschools, urging others to getinvolved in aviation. She oftentalked about one day opening aflight school.

In 1926, Coleman was preparingfor a performance in Florida. Shewas unable to get a plane for thenext air show, where she planneda spectacular parachute jump fromthe plane, and had her publicistand mechanic, William Wills, deliver her plane from Dallas.Wills had to land several times forrepairs before arriving. On April30, she and Wills took off on atest flight. Unknown to eitherone, a wrench had been left insidethe engine assembly. During theflight, the wrench came loose, damaging the internal controls. The plane suddenly went into anuncontrolled spin, plummeting tothe ground. Coleman was thrownout of the plane, falling to herdeath. Wills died when the planecrashed moments later.

The 34-year-old aviation pioneerwas buried in Chicago. The cityand aviators alike came to honorher memory in the yearsafterward. Chicago named alibrary and a park for her. Severalother cities named streets for hernear their airports. TheAerospace Education Foundationin New York offers the BessColeman Scholarship for studentsinterested in aviation careers. In1995, the U. S. Postal Serviceissued a stamp in her honor. TheCedar Hill Independent SchoolDistrict opened Bessie ColemanMiddle School in 2006.

Perhaps the most fitting tributecame decades after her death. In1992, Dr. Mae Jemison, the firstAfrican-American woman inspace, carried a small picture ofColeman with her on her missionaboard the space shuttleEndeavour. A great moment inexploration became possible byone person opening the door forothers to follow. All eyes hadturned to the skies once again forBessie Coleman.

Encouragement for the soul

Dr. BillyHolland

to his studies about the Christianlife, it seems to be impossible tobe depressed and to walk in thejoy of God’s presence at the sametime. After our conversation, Icontinued to ponder this statementand by the way, I do agree with it.I’m not saying that developing anoptimistic lifestyle or being filledwith spiritual joy is easy by anystretch of the imagination, but Idefinitely believe it is a subjectworth considering. We know thatbeing joyful in the Lord is a directresult of our personal relationshipwith Him, so in order to live inthis state of mind, it’s obviousthat we must not only restructurethe way we think, but have asincere desire to embrace Christas our Lord and Master.

So, why do I at times allow themelancholy feelings ofdespondency to influence me? Ithas everything to do with losingfocus of Christ who is the sourceof my strength and hope. It’s soeasy to drift away especially withall the distractions that surroundus and tempt us with negativepersuasions. It takes a strongdetermination to maintain aserious relationship with God andto abide in the awareness of Hispresence. The more we thinkabout God, the more we willdesire to be with Him. SometimesI allow my enthusiasm to bequenched by allowing mycircumstances to bring fear andworry upon me. When I’veneglected to pray, study, or to justspend quiet time with Him, I findmyself becoming spiritually weakin my faith and doubting that Hecares or will take care of myproblems and needs. I’ve also feltdiscouragement andcondemnation from my mistakesand often forget that forgivenessis only a prayer away. The enemy

of our soul never takes a vacationand is devoted to making our lifemiserable for the missedopportunities we have blown andwrong decisions we have made. Werealize there are many faithfulworkers in the Kingdom of God thatare tired and discouraged andsometimes they do not feelappreciated in their calling, but theLord sees your labors and considersyou a success not because of yourabilities but because of yourobedience and sincere love for Him.

In the Bible, we find a man namedBarnabas who was one of thosepositive and optimistic personalitiesthat we all enjoy being around. Hesaw the good and the potential inothers along with having a greatattitude and a hopeful outlook onlife. The Collins Dictionary definesthe name Barnabas as, “Son ofconsolation” and the wordconsolation means a person or thingthat is a source of comfort in a timeof suffering, grief, sadness anddisappointment. In Acts 11:22-24 wefind a description of his personality.“And they sent out Barnabas to go asfar as to Antioch. Who when hecame and had seen the grace of God,he was glad, and exhorted[encouraged] them all that withpurpose of heart they would cleaveunto the Lord. For he was a goodman, full of the Holy Ghost and offaith: And a great many people wereadded to the Lord.” The ministry ofencouragement is one that everyChristian has been called todemonstrate and I definitely need toconstantly remind myself about thisimportant responsibility. The wordencourage means to inspire otherswith hope and confidence, tostimulate, motivate, support, adviseor urge by approval or help. Iwonder when was the last time wewent out of our way to encouragesomeone? Unfortunately, it seemswe seldom realize that we all needencouragement. Maybe it’s becausewe are so focused on seeking it forourselves that we forget to helpothers? What a difference it makeswhen someone comes alongside andtells you they believe in you, thatyou are doing a great job and are alight of inspiration and hope to theworld. Anne Frank is quoted assaying, “Everyone has inside them apiece of good news. The good newsis you don’t know how great you can

I was talking with aChristian brotherthe other day abouthow it seems thatmany people areliving in sadnessanddiscouragement, when suddenly hemade a commentthat really causedme to think. Hesaid that according

has people rightly rattled, thoughit’s a little hard to predict howdrastic or long-term the effects willbe. Short answer, we saw a spike inoil prices and could soon see arelated bump in gas prices. In thelong run, it looks like we’re goingto be okay.

● Production halted but supplydidn’t cease. A massive amount ofoil supply dropped off as a result ofthe attack, which is why the priceper barrel shot up about 20% rightaway. However, the spike settleddown and price didn’t exceed itsprevious high from last October. The facilities and oil field attackedaccount for around 5% of theworld’s production, so anytimesomething happens on this scalepeople are bound to panic. The factthat prices went down after theSaudis and American governmentannounced they would releasemillions of reserve barrels into themarket shows that panic isn’t likelyto be sustained.

● Consumer impact willdepend on how long it takes to getpower restored. The strike didn’tspill millions of barrels of oil intodesert sand, but it took theproduction plant offline anddamaged essential equipment. Oilports still have plenty of barrels atthe ready, but the disruptionreduced the barrel-per-day (BPD)output by 5.7 million barrels, sothat will definitely be felt if it takestoo long to get things up andrunning. I don’t know if everyfamily in America needs to adjusttheir budgets for escalating gas

We knowyou’re going to say that we shouldtake the smart phone away, butwe’re concerned that may makematters worse. Your thoughts?

A: Recent research hasfound that teenage girls and boysrelate and respond to technology invastly different ways, meaning thatyour experience with your son wasby no means predictive concerningyour daughter. For teenage girls, social media is likely to become aplatform upon which they act outemotionally charged personaldramas. In these soap operas theteen world is simplisticallybifurcated into villains and victims, winners and losers, lucky andunlucky, popular and unpopular, and so on. Girls who perceivethemselves as belonging to the lessadvantaged group are vulnerable tofeelings of social isolation andworthlessness, episodes ofdepression and self-harming, andsuicidal thoughts. Sound familiar?

Boys, on the other hand, are morelikely to use smart phones to go onInternet adventures. Unfortunately, these voyages of discovery oftenlead them into pornography andcontact with pedophiles. Given thatboys tend to be more covert thangirls, I would not be at all certainthat your son is suffering nountoward effects from being thepossessor of a smart phone. Thefact is, teens quickly learn how to

prices, but anyone who runs acompany with a fleet of vehiclesmight have to give that somethought and keep an eye on thefacility repairs in Saudi Arabia.

● Energy markets and foreignaffairs are inextricably tied. Thisevent has really shined a light onhow important oil is and howmuch the world relies on a productcoming from a volatile area.Personally, it affirms my beliefthat every investor should look atenergy commodities as analternative investment; anyshakeup in the global marketillustrates how important andvaluable these resources are. In amonth or so we might haveforgotten all about this particularattack, but don’t lose sight of thelessons we can learn from it.

I’ll be following this story as itcontinues to develop because it’sclearly not being brushed aside asa small incident. I certainly hope itwon’t affect your bank account toodirectly, but it’s certainly worthkeeping an eye on. Thanks for thequestion, Susan!

conceal from adults where they’regoing and what they’re doing onthe Internet. I’m just sayin’.

As I’ve often said, there is no goodreason – NOT ONE! – for a teen tohave a smart phone. Self-employedbusinesspeople like myself canjustify having one. People who doa lot of business-related traveling(again, me) can justify having one.Likewise, folks who have to beconstantly in some information“loop” or another. But teenagers?Nope. Not one good reason. Youwant your teen to be able tocommunicate with you at amoment’s notice? Fine. Give him acell phone (will talk and text only)and a phone card. Virtually nosupervision required!

You might guess I have nosympathy for the “all the kids hisage have one” pretext. Let’s getreal! In plain English, thattranslates to “I’m a parent whowants my child to like me and I’mafraid, therefore, of denying himanything he wants.” Unfortunatelyfor us all, most parents these daysseem to suffer from Weak andIneffectual Misdirected Parenting.Have you figured out the acronymyet?

Putting myself in your place, Iwould have no problem at allconfiscating both smart phonesand substituting inexpensive cellphones. Simply tell your daughteryou don’t think it’s a coincidencethat her problems began when shegot a smart phone in her hands.Tell your son you’re tired ofworrying what he might be gettinginto. Don’t explain yourselves anyfurther than that. Don’t be drawninto negotiations. Don’t be afraidto be disliked for a time. They’llcome back around eventually.

Besides, what adult in his or herright mind cares whether ateenager likes them or not?
