Welcome to Springfield!

Springfield is a city with a very interesting past. With the help of a young lawyer and politician named Abe Lincoln, the city became Illinois’ state capital in 1837. Abe Lincoln lived here until he was elected as the 16th President of the United States in 1861. The sites in Springfield not only portray the life of Abe Lincoln, but the uncertainty and turmoil of a nation on the edge of civil war. With all of the different types of attractions and entertainment that Springfield has to offer, you have no excuse for being bored.

Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic is located about twenty miles northwest of Springfield. This site is where the future president first came to live. Here, he volunteered for the Black Hawk War, served as postmaster, clerked in a store, and failed a business, all before starting his legal studies and moving to Springfield to pursue his political career. A replica of the village was created, featuring authentic homes, workshops, stores, and a tavern. During weekends this summer, a musical, Abraham!, will be presented, dramatizing his earlier years.

Located in the city of Springfield, you can find the restored Old State Capitol, where Lincoln attended over 240 Supreme Court hearings. The Lincoln Depot is where the newly elected president said goodbye to Springfield and boarded his train for Washington, DC. The next time he returned was in his funeral train. Lincoln’s Tomb is located at Oak Ridge Cemetery, north of town.

You can take a tour of the chambers of the state Senate and House of Representatives at the current Illinois State Capitol. The Illinois State Museum is full of natural history and Native American art exhibits. North of town, you will find Shea’s Gas Station Museum, displaying over 50 years of road signs, gas pumps, and Route 66 memorabilia.

We are sure that you’ll find something that appeals to everyone, whether it’s listening to the joyous sounds of the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, a family outing at Knights Action Park, a day of history with reliving the past of Abe Lincoln, or enjoying a round of golf at one of the many area golf courses. Feel like a day of shopping? Visit the White Oaks Mall that features over 115 stores and restaurants and then take a stroll in historic downtown Springfield and check out the unique, specialty shops and restaurants.

Don’t miss out on the live music events that are taking place at the Hoogland Center for the Arts, the New Salem Country Opry, and the Prairie Convention Center. Are you due for a night of relaxation and entertainment? Check out the live theater on several stages including the New Salem Theatre in the Park, The Muni Outdoor Theater, and the Hoogland Center for the Arts.

Springfield will be featuring several big festivals and events towards the end of summer. The Springfield Tri Fest will take place at the end of July, featuring the Dew the Tri for Kids, Iron Abe Triathlon, and the Stoneman Sprint Triathlon. With concerts featuring Lynryd Skynyrd, Kelly Clarkson, Josh Turner, Montgomery Gentry, and Kellie Pickler, the Illinois State Fair will be the place to be from August 14 – 23. The Old Capital Blues & BBQ will take place August 29 in downtown Springfield. There will be nationally known Blues talent along with BBQ competition and vending.

The Illinois Symphony Orchestra is preparing for their 17th concert season and Mae-stra Karen Lynne Deal’s tenth. In 2008-2009, the Symphony performed such favorites as Dvorák’s “From the New World” and Holst’s The Planets, set to an amazing 3-D display. This year promises to be equally spectacular with a celebration of Mendelssohn’s birthday, guest violinist and rock star Rachel Barton Pine, a world premiere, and famed guest pianist Leon Bates.

The season kicks off with two free performances guaranteed to get the audience ex-cited. The Orchestra plays at the Illinois State Fair on August 17th, at Miller Park in Bloom-ington September 5th, and at Douglas Park in Springfield on September 6th. The concerts are the seventh annual “Pops in the Park” series.

The concerts November 20th-21st will celebrate the 200th birthday of famous composer Felix Mendelssohn. Mendelssohn was a German composer who lived from 1809-1847. His most famous works include the score to A Midsummer Night’s Dream (from which springs the traditional wedding processional). The Illinois Symphony Orchestra will perform the entire score, as well as his Symphony No. 3 (or “Scottish” Symphony) and his Violin Con-certo in E Minor.

Rachel Barton Pine livens up the stage on February 12th-13th for the “Valentine Sur-prise” concert. In addition to being an accomplished classical violinist since the age of sev-en, Pine also plays violin for her rock band, Earthen Grave. She has released or appeared on 14 albums and performed music ranging from Metallica to Brahms. The “surprise” part of “Valentine Surprise” features a Mystery Love Story.

In March, the Illinois Symphony Orchestra has the honor of presenting a new work by contemporary American composer Judith Shatin. March 12th-13th will be the world premiere of Jefferson- In His Own Words, a mix of both orchestration and narration. It fol-lows a tradition of inspiration from any source, as Shatin is known for including birdsong and animal calls in her compositions.

April 23rd-24th brings another guest artist with the arrival of pianist Leon Bates. Bates is an American concert pianist who has toured all over the world. He is well known for his work bringing classical music to children through teaching and college lectures. Bates will be joining the Illinois Symphony Orchestra on two of Beethoven’s works.

In addition to the more formal Masterworks concerts, the Illinois Symphony Orchestra is known for their fun Pops concerts. Pops I is on October 30th-31st, suitably Halloween themed, and Holiday Pops on December 18th-19th. There’s always something to see at Halloween Pops, since many of the orchestra and audience members come in costume. There is a costume contest for the children, who get to walk on stage and meet Maestra Deal. The “Home for the Holidays” Pops is always a favorite, with classic Christmas music as well as lesser-known pieces.

The dedication these musicians have for the music comes through in every perfor-mance. The Illinois Symphony Orchestra is ready for an amazing season and to show Central Illinois how “It’s All About the Music.”

Loose Shoes is a variety band from Pekin, Illinois. It has approximately sixteen full and part-time members that specialize in live music entertainment for community events and private social functions. The band started as the brain child of Dr. Eric Reinertson, a local Obstetrician/Gynecolo-

gist. Originally, a smaller group of musicians were assembled to “jam” once a month or so, with some classic rock tunes and eventually play for the office Christmas party. Over the course of a couple of years, several musicians joined the band from various connections. Some have come and gone and the mix now includes about two more of everything; singers, keyboards, trumpets, guitars, saxophones, trombones, etc. Three of the members are local physicians, which occasionally gives rise to the name “the Doctors’ band”. This band has a strong rhythm section that is accented by a full brass combo and several exceptional vocalists. Classic rock covers and songs from the 1940’s to current hits are the predominant presentation material.

STRINGSDr. Eric ReinertsonDr. Reinertson looks back to high school, remember being asked if he wanted to play in a band. He thought that was a strange request since he wasn’t a member of neither choir nor band and has never played an instrument. He ended up agreeing anyway, bought a bass guitar and amp and memorized about 50 songs that were taught to him. Over the course of the last 25 years, Dr. Reinertson has been in many different bands. Until Loose Shoes, bass has been his primary instrument. He received a 1960 reissue Gibson Les Paul as a Christmas gift from his family and took a year’s worth of lessons. His focus is now on lead and rhythm guitar for the majority of songs and bass on a few others. “It is both challenging and rewarding for me to play and to organize this band. None of the previous bands have had as much diversity as this one and I truly enjoy this time away from life’s troubles. Every day is better when the music is playing.”Dr. Eric Reinertson is a Board Certified Obstetrician/Gynecologist in Pekin, Illinois at the Women’s Center for Health. He was born in California, raised in North Dakota and then went to Nursing School in Wyoming, where he met his beautiful wife, Betty.

Scott MungeScott, also known as “Scooter”, began playing in front of the public during his senior year of high school and hasn’t been able to be dragged off stage since. He has done solo acoustic, duets and various bands over the years. “Music has always been a release for me and has always been a big part of my life. It is the free flowing creative balance to my logical side,” Scott says of his passion for music. Scott says that being a part of Loose Shoes is unlike anything he has ever done before: “The variety of music is refreshing and the band is truly a family. We can lay down some serious music and have fun while doing it. With such a unique variety of people and personalities, average is never an option both on and off stage. Without a doubt, this is the most fun I’ve ever had playing music.”

Bunny BalabanMusic has always been a major part of Bunny’s life. Playing nearly a dozen instruments has allowed her the opportunity to play with bands, orchestras, jazz bands, quartets, and chamber ensembles. Bunny is a cello and violin teacher at the Pekin School District and keyboardist, occasional guitarist and vocalist for On Higher Ground (a contemporary worship band at Our Savior Lutheran Church). As a Massage Therapist,

she is continually looking for music that will promote healing and relaxation. Bunny adds that her music skills have been continually challenged since joining Loose Shoes in 2002. “The growth in the group, both in numbers and musically, has been phenomenal. Even though everyone in the group holds down a “day” job, everyone works hard to make the group and each other better.

Brian BenassiBrian enjoys being in band with so many talented people. He loves to sing and hopes the band will be around for a long time. He really likes their horn section and how it sets them apart from other area bands.

Randy Kohtz Randy started playing bass guitar when he was 13 years old and was immediately hooked. He has been in many rock bands since that time. Loose Shoes gives him an opportunity to work with others who enjoy music and to play a variety of songs that reach many different people. For the past 26 years, he has been a letter carrier for the Peking Post Office.

VOCALSDr. Adrian CordobaMusic has always been a big part of Dr. Cordoba’s life. He started playing trombone at age 9 and has played in a number of bands during both high school and college. As lead vocalist and trombonist, he is very excited about the bands future endeavors and has really enjoyed playing with them. Also vocal, Brian Benassi, Randy Kohtz, and Bunny Balaban

KEYBOARDSBill Bond, MD Loose Shoes is Bill’s first band since being in high school, not counting playing the piano in hotels, lounges and bars, while attending Medical School for extra money. He has had a lot of fun playing with the band. “I have a long way to go being a synth player instead of a piano player, so I need to learn more than I can learn quickly at my stage of life. Bill is an Eye Surgeon at Bond Eye Associates.

HORNSMary YoungMary has been playing clarinet since she was 10 and saxophone since she was 18. Music is her way of relaxing and having fun. She loves being in Loose Shoes: “Everyone is very nice and super fun and its fun being in a “cool” band”. Mary is a Medical Technologist at Graham Hospital located in Canton. She plays her clarinet and saxophone in the orchestra at Pekin 1st Church of the Nazarene and has been known to show her face in the choir from time to time.

Justin RileyJustin began playing music, with the trumpet, at age nine as well as playing in school bands, symphonic wind ensembles, church orchestras, brass quintets, marching bands, pep bands, and various jazz bands, continuing into college. “I am very much enjoying playing in Loose Shoes as all of our selections are from those two categories. And, after being away from playing for a few years, I had certainly forgotten how much fun it could be to play in a band. I am very thankful to this group for the opportunity to play and have fun again.”Also on horns, Greg Locke, “the Kid”, and Adiran.

The memory of more than 1,500 Illinoisans is preserved at the Illinois Korean War Memorial in Springfield’s Oak Ridge Cemetery, the nation’s second most visited cemetery behind only Arlington National Cemetery. Oak Ridge also contains the Illinois World War II and Vietnam Veterans Memorials, as well as the final resting place of our 16th President and his family, Lincoln Tomb. Dedicated on June 16, 1996, the Illinois Korean War Memorial consists of a 12-foot bronze bell mounted on a granite base. At the circumference of the bell are four niches, each with a larger-than-life figure representing a branch of the armed services. Inscribed on the base are the 1,753 names of Illinoisans killed in Korea. Commemorative services are held at the Illinois Korean War Memorial on Memorial Day.

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum is designed to fully engage the general public in the life and times of America’s 16th President. The overall size of the Library and Museum is 200,000 square feet, making it the nation’s largest Presidential Library complex.

• Museum – an entire city block of state-of-the-art, full-immersion experiences and galleries that guide guests into and through the life and times of Abraham Lincoln.

• Library – home to the world’s largest collection of Lincoln-related materials and new home of the Illinois State Historical Library.

• Union Station – a restored 1890 train depot that acts as the gateway to Lincoln’s life, it serves as a visitor orientation center where guests can purchase tickets, make reservations, obtain travel itineraries and learn about other Lincoln sites in Illinois.

• Union Square Park – a public park with two new Lincoln sculptures, a gazebo, flowers, benches, and outdoor performance areas.

• Parking Garage – accommodates visitors with 600 parking spaces plus 26 spaces for tour buses and other large passenger vehicles.

THE MUSEUMThe 100,000-square-foot museum portion of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum redefines the possible in presidential complexes. The museum’s 40,000 square feet of exhibit space is considerably larger than exhibit space in any other presidential library.

But what really sets the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum apart from every other historical museum is the scope, creativity and visitor engagement of its displays. Using advanced technologies normally reserved for theme parks, yet maintaining rigorous standards of scholarship, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum presents a fully immersive theatrical experience enabling 21st cen-tury visitors to inhabit Lincoln’s life and times. They encounter historical settings, interactive exhibits and theatrical special effects that make the history engaging, both intellectually and emotionally.

Rather than duplicate sites important to Lincoln’s life, the Museum offers visitors a taste that encourages them to explore the Lincoln landscape of historic sites across Illinois and throughout the country.

THE JOURNEY, a linear exhibit that takes visitors from Lincoln’s boyhood log cabin through his presidency and assassination, features:

• Slave Auction – depicts a family being torn apart, this is a scene Lincoln almost certainly encountered as a teenager during a trip down the Mississippi River.

Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum

Page 19: Playing in Springfield (Fall 2009)

• Law Office – Lincoln’s 25 years as a lawyer are crucial to his political success, and this scene in his Springfield office also shows that he was a very permissive parent.

• Campaign of 1860 – If there had been television coverage of this most divisive election in U.S. history, it may have looked like this, complete with campaign commercials.

• The White House Blue Room – here Mrs. Lincoln is being fitted for a ball gown by her dressmaker and close friend, Elizabeth Keckley, as she fights her own private war for social acceptance in the nation’s capital.

• Whispering Gallery – the wicked editorial cartoons and whispered comments from citizens in both the North and South surround visitors in this unsettling room that shows how unpopular the new President and First Lady were.

• Rumors in the Kitchen – a reproduction of the Lincoln White House Kitchen where visitors hear black servants whispering rumors ranging from Mary Todd Lincoln’s sanity to the promise of emancipation.

• The War Gallery – a number of displays and interactive exhibits describing the human tragedy and sacrifice of the Civil War. A stunning film compresses four years of conflict into four minutes, complete with an “odometer of death” synchronized to show mounting casualties on both sides.

• Ford’s Theater and Lying in State in the Old State Capitol – these two settings that are key to the assassination story are reproduced in nearly full-scale, one showing the moments before the fatal shot and the other Lincoln’s casket as it was viewed by mourners.

THE TREASURES GALLERY displays the most important original items in the Lincoln collection.

UNION THEATER features the 17-minute “Lincoln’s Eyes,” a multi-screen, multi-media surround experience.

GHOSTS OF THE LIBRARY, an SBC Holavision® Theater show mixes a live actor and special effects to highlight the facility’s world-renowned collection.

MRS. LINCOLN’S ATTIC, an area just for children with period costumes in their size, plus games and activities from the 1800s.

ILLINOIS GALLERY, where world-class, temporary exhibits hosted in more than 3,000 square feet of space.

RESTAURANT featuring soups, sandwiches and other menu items in a spacious dining area.

MUSEUM STORE, the most successful presidential library gift shop in the country. An average of one out of every six visitors to the Museum purchase a book at the Museum Store.

The Museum exhibits were designed by Bob Rogers of BRC Imagination Arts, Burbank, CA; the architect for the Library/Museum complex is Gyo Obata of Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum, Inc., St. Louis, MO.

THE LIBRARY• 99,800 sq. feet, including 22,000 square feet of stack storage.• 27,584 cubic feet of manuscript shelving.• Capacity for 258,400 reels of microfilm.• 4,728 cubic feet of audio-visual cabinetry.• Six miles of compact book shelving.• 12 million artifacts and documents pertaining to all eras of Illinois history, including a Lincoln collection of more than 50,000 items.• Multi-purpose conference space, reading rooms, conservation and photography labs, research carrels, and audio-visual listening and viewing areas.

Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site, about 2 miles South of Petersburg and about 20 miles Northwest of Springfield, is a reconstruction of the village where Abraham Lincoln spent his early adulthood. The six years Lincoln spent in New Salem formed a turning point in his career. Although

he never owned a home here, Lincoln was engaged in a variety of activities while he was at New Salem. He clerked in a store, split rails, enlisted in the Black Hawk War, served as postmaster and deputy surveyor, failed in business, and was elected to the Illinois General Assembly in 1834 and 1836 after an unsuccessful try in 1832.The site features twelve log houses, the Rutledge Tavern, ten workshops, stores, mills and a school that have been reproduced and furnished as they might have been in the 1830s. The furnishings, including many articles actually used by the New Salem people of Lincoln’s time and others dating back to the same time period, were assembled and donated to the state by the Old Salem Lincoln League.

Do You Have the Pioneer Spirit? Come catch it at the Pioneer Life Summer Day Camp programs! Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site, in conjunction with Illinois College, offers programs for youth entering 5th - 12th grade. It is our mission to provide a safe, friendly and productive environment where youth can attain knowledge regarding New Salem, its residents and the effect they had on Abraham Lincoln during his six years of transition from aimless drifter to lawyer and statesman. We also want youth to experience the persistence and determination that was necessary to sustain life at New Salem in the 1830s, skills that will allow them to achieve success throughout their own lives. For more information on the summer camp programs, please visit www.lincolnsnewsalem.com.

Theatre In The Park Performances are held Fridays through Sundays from mid June until late August in a 475 seat outdoor amphitheater designed for comfort, with auditorium-style seating, concession and a unique multi-level stage. In the event of rain, a total of 200 people with marked tickets will be admitted to New Salem’s smaller indoor theater. Rain stickers will be applied to the first 200 tickets sold for each performance.

What is Chautauqua?Chautauqua was a popular association and amusement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The heart and soul of Chautauqua was the talent, the lectures, the entertainers, and the teachers who provided the culture and entertainment. Chautauquas in the rural areas, gathered and the largest audiences and made the greatest impact on the communities. New Salem continues that Chautauqua tradition by offering a series of plays, concerts and lectures during the off-season.

To celebrate the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial, the Illinois State Museum premiers an original exhibition, From Humble Beginnings, Lincoln’s Illinois 1830 – 1861, exploring all aspects of the state that Lincoln called home between 1830 and 1861. The exhibition opened at the Illinois State Museum in Springfield on February 6, 2009 and extends through January 10, 2010.

Lincoln’s Illinois presents a captivating perspective of the Lincoln era through the objects and stories of the people who lived here. Featured in the exhibition are historical maps, artifacts, household furnishings, a rare John Deere plow, Peter Cartwright’s traveling desk, rifles and pistols, artifacts from New Philadelphia and other archaeological sites, and many other objects that demonstrate the dynamic changes that helped transform Illinois from a frontier region to a powerful state.

The exhibition was developed by the Illinois State Museum, drawing on unique objects in the Museum’s collections, such as the traveling desk used by Methodist circuit rider Peter Cartwright. Eighteen institutions, individuals, and corporations loaned significant objects for this exhibition, including the Chicago Historical Society (slave shackles and portraits), Deere and Company (1855 steel scouring plow), and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library (historical maps and photographs). Also on display for the first time are a circa 1840 Star of Bethlehem quilt and an 1853 coverlet recently donated to the Illinois State Museum.

“Lincoln’s Illinois presents the social, cultural, historical, and environmental contexts of Illinois during the Lincoln era. This exhibition provides a peek into the world in which Abraham Lincoln lived. It gives us an opportunity to consider the issues and concerns of the day, and begin to understand the changes in the landscape and in Illinoisans’ lives,” said Angela Goebel-Bain, Illinois State Museum Curator of Decorative Arts and co-curator of the exhibition.

In 1830, like thousands of Southerners before him, Abraham Lincoln drove his team of oxen with his family to frontier Illinois in search of a better life. Thirty years later, a train carrying the sixteenth President of the United States—Abraham Lincoln—steamed out of an Illinois station. When the Lincolns first arrived, Illinois was a frontier state with a population of just 157,445. By 1861, railroads tied the state to the industrial Northeast, sparking a general expansion of industry and agriculture in Illinois and the population had grown to over 1.7 million. With improved transportation, Northeasterners and Europeans flooded the state, creating an intensely dynamic population—a microcosm of America, which Lincoln determined to represent. From Humble Beginnings: Lincoln’s Illinois 1830 – 1861 reveals this dramatic transformation.

Maps of Illinois from the 1830s – 1861 illustrate how improved transportation impacted the settlement of Illinois. Ceramics, clothing, textiles, furniture, paintings, photographs, children’s toys, and other objects demonstrate the vast changes in family life as Illinoisans became more prosperous and goods became less expensive. Also on display are agricultural tools and implements, rifles and pistols from the period, and artifacts from archaeological sites.

A year-long suite of public programs relating to the themes of this exhibition has been planned for 2009. These include evening lectures for adults, family events with activities and entertainment, and Super Saturdays in A Place for Discovery with crafts and activities for children ages four through eight. For a schedule of programs and events, go to the Museum’s Web site www.museum.state.il.us/events or call (217) 782-5993.

From Humble Beginnings: Lincoln’s Illinois 1830 - 1861 is made possible in part by a grant from the Illinois Humanities Council, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Illinois General Assembly. The Illinois State Museum Society’s 1877 Fund has also provided support for this exhibition.

The Illinois State Museum is located at 502 S. Spring Street. (corner of Spring and Edwards Streets) in Springfield, and is open 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, noon to 5:00 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free. Parking is available nearby, and the building is ADA accessible. For information, call 217-782-7386.

With the incredible rise in popularity of ball golf, it’s no surprise that disc golf is also enjoying a similar -- if proportional -- rise in popularity. Disc golf offers many of the same pleasures: fresh air in a beautiful landscape, the camaraderie of friends, and the challenge and excitement of combining personal skill and speed to project an object toward a target. And perhaps best of all, disc golf is inexpensive. The only equipment you need is a flying disc, and most disc golf courses are located in municipal parks, which admit players for free or charge a minimal fee for daily or yearly access. Don’t expect to see many freestyle discs out on the course. These discs, commonly seen at the beach, will prove to be bulky and lack the distance you’ll want for driving. On the other hand, the sharper edges of a golf disc can be very painful if used for a game of catch! Traditionally dominated by 18 to 54-year-old males, the field of disc golf players has expanded greatly in recent years to include many women and families. Kids love it, it’s a cheap date and a great excuse to get a little outdoor exercise. Bottom line: disc golf can be big fun for everyone regardless of age, gender or economic status.
