Digital imaging and manipulation

This workshop demonstrates how a iPad/iPhone can be a mobile editing suite as well as your means of capturing images and sharing online. via email and social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, Wordpress, Facebook, etc.

With a limited tool-box of applications a high quality of image manipulation for print or web can be achieved. We show you how!

The workshop covers image enhancement, colour correction, one click filters and digital finger painting (literally moving the pixels of your image around the screen like paint.)

The workshop are suitable for all ages and/or mixed groups of business, third sector, museums, etc. or private sessions in your workplace.

Suitable for all ages and backgrounds - The workshop can also an interesting way of exploring specific themes, exhibitions or artists. (I recently ran a workshop in Perth that tied in with the

work of portrait photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.)

Also, challenging subjects like Picasso’s Cubist Portraiture can be made much more accessible through the use of an application like ‘Fracture’ which creates photographic portraits from multiple images that are painted together using the touch screen.

For business use the iPad/iPhone can be means of capturing images, editing and sharing.

Workshops can be designed for groups of up to 20 at a time and last anywhere between 1hr and a day depending on requirements.

Workshop requires attendees to bring their own iPad/iPhone with ‘app’ pre-installed. Very limited number of iPads available for hire on request.

This workshop has the potential to accommodate a variety of themes.

QR Codes, digital bar codes that can be scanned by most modern mobile phones and tablets. Once scanned the codes direct your mobile device to pre-determined web-content; web pages, images, video, audio, etc...

Generally QR Codes are printed onto leaflets/posters, etc, and so provide a great way of exploring technology in a physical and tangible form as well as the speculation of home mobile media may develop in the future. It’s also a truly tech-y project that spend very little time tied to a computer and instead gets participants up on their feet exploring the real word with digital tools.

By installing a series of QR codes across a room, building, or even a city, it is possible to create

creative and engaging experiences (for learning, education, business, marketing, history, the list is endless...) that is closer to an old fashioned treasure hunt than a video game, but fresh and new in its delivery.

I have designed temporary (http://wp.me/p21tPY-e6) and permanent trails (bit.ly/balmullo).

Learning groups in my workshops have ranged from Primary 2s to PhDs and third sector.

For the kids all of my projects have clear links to the Curriculum for Excellence which can be supplied in advance or built into the project on request.

For everyone else, with a little understanding of a specific project a bespoke learning activity can be designed.

Animation

Another workshop focussed on the iPad/iPhone/iPodTouch as the primary tool for capturing and editing short animated films.

Animation, and more specifically stop-frame animation offers a breadth of learning opportunities. Ability to draw is not a requirement and in most cases workshops operate with a mix of abilities in the room.

The workshop covers the work of familiar film makers and studios such as Nick Park (Creature Comforts, Wallace and Gromit), Disney, Pixar (Toy Story, Up) as well as lesser known artists.

Making still images and objects move is a fascinating experience and so the project very quickly gets on with the business of turning participants into animators.

Building on the traditions of the zoetrope and the flip-book we

use simple digital applications to make the mysteries of the movies accessible to all.

Drawing may be involved to visualise simple characters or storyboard ideas but most of the animation processes makes use of objects including Lego and perhaps the participants themselves as the subjects of the animation.

The theme or context of the workshop can be tailored to specific projects (inc. Curriculum for Excellence according to your requirements.

At the end of the workshop the final films can be shared online (secure YouTube link, dropbox) or on digital media (DVD, CD or Pendrive).

Ideal for youth groups, families or corporate groups looking for creative ways of visualisingideas..

The ever evolving channels and platforms of social media appear to be here to stay. Even if you’re not sure if, or why, you would want to use social media there is value in understanding it for the benefit of your family, business or workplace.

It seems that everyone is using social networks but not everyone knows why...

From marketing strategies to security and privacy there is a lot to think about.

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Wordpress, Blogger... there are so many options and it’s all so time consuming!

There are many questions you may have about social media but the first to answer is, “Where is the value for me?”, and that’s where I start!

From Public Sector the Primary Three there is a workshop to help you navigate safely and effectively the online social networks.

If you’re a business then you probably need a social media strategy but one that effectively engages with your audience but doesn’t take all of your time.

You will want to know how to use these tools safely and securely; and for teachers we have a variety of projects and exercises, tied to CfE, to demonstrate positively the learning potential and value of online social media and their networks.

What’s not to ‘like’?
