indie filmakers are a norm in todays filmaking era Big budget high celeb stars are no longerneeded to make a great film Cameras are at an all time low and the desire for good films are at aall time high Even kids as little as five and six are getting in on the crazy with their own FisherPrice cameras or their parents cell phone I had the pleasure of talking and knowing one of thegreats in Indie film making A true master of his craft with awards and commendations tomatch When you first talk to Hank he comes off as a calm and laid back humble person andthere is good reason why because he is Even with his busy schedule he still had time to do thisinterview one for which I thank him Here is his story

So when did it all start for you When did you know you wanted to be in films - I dont think it was asingular moment but a culmination of years just being a fan of film first I watched films just like everyoneelse as a kid but then something happened I began to study them I stayed after people were walking out tosee who did the music the cinematography set design Whats a Gaffer Whats a grip Who wrote that andwhere did they come up with that idea We didnt have the internet back then so I had to look things up inencyclopedias and library books I felt that I could do this I can be a filmmaker I have always wanted to be afilmmaker but life happens You get married have kids work etc I didnt officially make my first film until Iwas 38 So its definitely been a burning desire Ive had that wouldnt go away Thank God

What has been the best time that you can remember while filming- I would say shooting my first filmThe Takehellipwe didnt know what the hell we were doing For many of us it was our first film My first timeacting on camera my first time hearing actors say the words that I wrote It was surreal We made every rookiefilmmaker mistake IN THE BOOK but we had so much fun We bonded on that film and Im so proud to call allof them friend to this day We worked very hard on that little crudely-shot mistake-riddled little movie Weentered it in the Bare Bones International Music and Film Festival where we faced some very stiffcompetition but we were blessed to have won the coveted audience choice award for Best Mini-Feature in2010

If you could do anything else besides films what would it be and why- Id love to write a few novels Its an adventure I havent dared to tale onbut I know I have a few good novels in me Tell me about a typical day in your life- Im a working man a fatherand in a committed relationship My day is typical I get up go to workand balance my life at home with my writing which I always find thetime to do something creative Thats key for my day do somethingcreative and read something that will educate you about your craft I have 5 children ranging from 16 months to 19 years old Im divorcedbut Im recently engaged to the love of my life Its her encouragementand support that keeps me going She is a busy mom to our rambunctiousson but she makes the time to make sure I have my space to create I loveher for that How do you feel about the industry today and where do you see thedirection it is going in- I think that the industry as the mainstreamgoes is too focused on big loud tentpole films I think Hollywood hasdisconnected with the audience for the most part I see a lot of films thatare esthetically superior but lack any kind of substance so we go seethese films we are visually stimulated and these films are easilyforgotten afterwards Really no replay value Thats why Ill alwayschampion the indie films and filmmakers who HAVE to learn how to tella story We lack the funds to let the visuals do it for us We are relegatedto one or two locations so we have to have something interesting to sayto keep the audiences engaged Most influential movie you have seen and why- Wow thats a toughone I love the medium so much its hard for me to narrow it down but if Ihave to pick a film that I fully connected with and love it would beForrest Gump That film was flawless It hit every note just right It waswritten with a lot of care and love meticulously and beautifully shot andfrom fade in to fade out it totally had me on an emotional roller coasterRobert Zemeckis NEVER has to direct a damned thing again and he willalways have his master work He can do st movies from now until hedies but they cant take Forrest away from him It was perfect Every

A lot of people mistakenly believe that shooting with a better videocamera will give them better footage In reality shooting with a top-of-the-line high definition video camera often does more to revealthe flaws in your shots than it does to improve them The biggest difference between bringing home so-so shots andfantastic footage isnrsquot what you are shoot with itrsquos what you areshooting at The best way to shoot better shots is to take greatercontrol over the look of the things you are shooting This meansthinking less like a video camera operator and more like a Director ofPhotography Think about it a video camera operator stands behindthe camera and shoots what he or she sees But a Director ofPhotography moves all over the set and takes control over everythingin the frame A Director of Photography isnrsquot only concerned with thecamera settings The DP makes decisions about everything from thecolor of the shirt on the subject to the position of the props and thelook of the lighting Lighting is the most critical factor in determiningimage quality When it comes to making lighting decisions there are at least fivefactors to consider every time you turn on a lighting instrumentPosition brightness quality shape and color

1) PositionLight positioning is about adjusting the length direction and angle ofshadows that an instrument casts A light source positioned near thevideo camera creates what is known as flat lighting Flat lighting islow on the creativity scale and neutral in terms of emotion As a lightis moved farther to the side of the subject it becomes increasingly
