About Play and Sing
These thirty exercises aim to help beginning music theory students (especially those lacking keyboard
experience) with the development of sight singing, rhythm, and music notation reading skills by combining
singing exercises with simple keyboard accompaniment. The act of coordinating playing with singing will
accelerate the process of learning to sight sing. Since the piano parts are very simple, non-pianists will be able
to perform most of these exercises. Moreover, music students lacking keyboard experience should become
better acquainted with the keyboard as they learn about music theory. Students should strive to perform theseexercises at a steady tempo. It would be beneficial for students to practice singing the piano parts or to perform
them with a partner. For those interested in obtaining more advanced Play and Sing exercises, the best book
containing such exercises is Sol BerkowitzsA New Approach to Sight Singing (W. W. Norton). Have fun with
these exercises.
